ACV for porous/coarse hair

I was doing some research to figure out how to make my hair less porous, and even though it seems like protein should be my friend, it isn't because my hair is also coarse. So I've been staying away from protein, and my hair is better but still gets a little tangled when it's dry. I came across something somewhere (and now I can't find it again) about adding ACV to your conditioner to balance the ph? I did it yesterday, when I had the amount of conditioner I wanted in my hand, I added a few drops of ACV and went about my regular routine. I definitely noticed a difference, it was less tangly and very shiny. Anyone else with a similar hair type use ACV? How do you use it?

I've been using the ACV rinse for about a month (twice). So far, my hair is softer, very shiny, and almost tangle free. After I deep condition my hair, I rinse with cool water, pour the ACV on my hair, fingercomb, then rinse with cool water again. Afterwards, I always use a moisturizing leave-in, then a styling cream or lotion.

Protein is not a problem unless you do not moisturize with a moisturizing conditioner followed by a leave-in; especially if your hair is porous to very porous. If necessary, continue to put on the leave-in for a few days.

I'm coarse and porous too. Like many coarse heads, I don't tolerate frequent protein. I've been using it about twice a month right now.

I've been using an ACV rinse every 7-10 days, which is more than most people probably need. I use 1/4 cup ACV to 2 cups water. I detangle, use the rinse, take my shower, rinse the ACV and then condition.

It does help reduce the frequency of tangles for me, and it imparts an almost silkiness that my natural texture does not have.

    Thanks...

I'm curious...do I NEED to use protein every once in a while? I've probably been protein free for maybe 2 months...if I'm going to add some, how should I do it? What is it supposed to do for my hair?

Most people need some protein, some just need more than others. Coarse hair has plenty of its own protein, so needs less from products than fine hair does in general, though there are always exceptions.

I once went nine months protein free, and then I figured out that I needed some protein and I had to learn how to introduce it.

I use the stetch test to determine when I need protein.

The only protein treatment I like is the GVP reconstructor from Sally's, which is the very cheap version of the Joico K-Pak reconstructor. Finding out which and what type of protein you can tolerate can be very trial and error.

Right now I use a protein treatment about twice a month, and then about 10 days after I get color. I just go by what my stretch test tells me. I son't use protein in my daily routine. Some can use protein daily without problems, and to their benefit.

Proteins job is to build and reenforce that hair strand. So, coarse hair, having a naturally thicker hair shaft, tend to need less protein.

Thank you so much! I definitely don't need protein yet according to the stretch test. I was (unknowingly) using protein a few times a week and once I went CG I had this nasty strawlike feel to my hair. Since I've cut it out my hair is much nicer! I don't want to go back to the grossness that I had before unless there is some reason that I should.

I love ACV rinses. My proportions are 2T ACV to 1 C water. I don't have a set routine, just when I remember but I don't color either. I get some protein from my stylers & LVPNG that seems to be enough for me!

I also ACV when I think of it; I deally 2-4 times a month on DT days.

My hair has not needed protein since cutting off the damage. I used to need protein with every shampoo before I went CG (all the ironing damage etc). I dont think ocassional protien would straw me out now, as my hair is mdeium, medium, medium, but who knows?

We actually use the same ratio! I just use double the amount that you do since 4T = 1/4 cup.

ETA: That solution is pretty acidic. A good one to start with if one has never done and ACV rinse is 1T to one cup and adjust from there.
