Tons of pixie knots

The bottom of my hairs are full of pixie knots. What causes this and what is it a sign of? I haven't had a cut or trim since Jan 9th of this year. I'm just trimming the hairs off right above the knot.

If I knew what pixie knots were, maybe I could help you. But I don't, so I can't.
That's right, I said it! I wear scrunchies!!

I am a sulfate washing, cone slabbing, curly lovin' s.o.b. The CG police haven't caught me yet.

The ends of my hair literally has little knots tied in them.

It looks like pixies tied them during the night.

Are pixie knots the knots you have on a single strand of hair?

I have them too...figured they were from tangling or running my fingers through my hair too much--therefore causing more tangling. Most of the time it's just a single strand knot, but sometimes two or three strands are knotted together. I've tried extra conditioner on the ends, doesn't work. So I just cut them off too!

Yes and mine are on the very ends of my hair. I tried to do a search and only found 2 other threads that mentioned them but didn't give any advice on how to take care of them or what causes them.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Speckla I don't get tangles at all, I think it's impossible when hair is this Thick :? but my little one gets some bad tangles. I've noticed when I started using a pea size of shea butter and/or coconut oil before bed, her tangles are practically non-existent. Do you have either of these on hand that you could put in tonight and sleep on it?

Nope, Del, only oil in the house if olive oil for cooking. Oil and my hair = a big no no. My hair hates oil. I think it's because my strands are fine and thinnish. I probably need to be cowashing more often. I've been stretching it out now and just wetting my hair every 3rd or 4th day.

My little girl is fine haired too. I was hesitant to use oils or butters on her but as long as I use a very small amt., she does really well.

Sounds like you need a DT and your hair is needing moisture.

I agree with Del, I used to get those a lot pre-CG. Now all the extra kindness from CG has taken care of them, and the only difference I can see is moisture.

My hair is also fine, Speckla. I get those type of knots when it's time for a trim.

I agree but I don't know what to DT with. It was a disaster last time that I used honey, olive oil, and banana babyfoot. I haven't achieved the right balance of moisture in my hair since then. I was doing great with cowashing and vinegar rinses and then got a wild hair to DT even though I didn't need it. My hair is a mystery right now because it's the longest that it's ever been and I'm nearly clueless. I do need to shampoo again (aussie) and ... oh duh, I do have Aussie 3 minute miracle...DT time tomorrow. ;) 3MM counts as a DT, right?

leave it in longer then 3min woman! Have you tried Generic Value Products conditioning balm from Sally's? It's only like $6 and works really well.

I use the Biotera Condish balm (same thing, 'round the same price) but I've run out. I'm trying to avoid buying more products right now. My son and I had to go to the doctor today -- prescriptions and visit kinda sucked up any extra $$.

I am definitely going to leave it in longer.

Ack! I get those too. I remember reading about it several months ago, and I think the conclusion was that you need more moisture, so I think you are on track with the DT.

Also, I don't think you can do anything for your current single strand knots but cut them off and keep a close eye on your moisture level and ends from now on. I think you can leave them in, but they seem to be tied to split ends and breakage if left in.

    Good luck!
I have 3c hair that I haven't straightened in over 5 years. It's just past shoulder length when dry, and almost waist length when pulled straight.

I used to get these back when I was brushing/combing my hair a lot. I've recently switched to finger de-tangling only and have noticed I don't get them as much.
    Texture: Fine
    Porosity: Low
    Elasticity: Low
    Density: Medium/High...I think

    My daughter gets these!!

I thought it was just her :-?

her hair is ultra fine, a hairdresser once said she has never seen hair so fine AND curly!! its the worst combination as when a knot appears its so fragile and fine that I can't untangle it and normally have to cut it out :sad3:

Any advice onhow to avoid these kind of knots would be appriciated

I get them too. Mine are always in the same area (rigth side , underneath) Question with Aussie 3 minute miracle. Doens't it have a cone in it? after you use A3mm do you have to do a sulfate wash??

It probably does have cones in it. I'm not CG right now and I shampoo with Aussie and use the conditioner.

You guys may want to do a search in the 4a forum. This is a very common thing amongst 4a/4b hair. The knots come from tangles, and keeping the ends moisturised (with shea butter or any other butter) does help a lot. Also braiding the hair at night instead of sleeping on loose hair keeps the tangles at bay. HTH :)

Spekla, did you say what type hair you have? I don't get the pixie knots but I get tangles often.
Anyway, I don't use commercial DTs. I make my own, with avocado and whatever sounds good - usually eggs, olive and lavender oil (just a little lav oil) or coconut oil, banana, and honey.
Some people don't like protein in their hair, so you could cut out the egg. If you cut out the oil too (you said you don't use oil) then I would just mash the banana and avocado together, or else mash the avocado up and mix it with your regular condish? Maybe with just a little oil?

My hair is 3b and it LOVES avocado.
That's me with FSG as my styler!!

These would be the death of me! Then I did alot of research on them. Moisture and trimmed ends are the main solution to pixie knots. Here's some tips:
    -Dust ends 1-2 month
    -Deep condition weekly
-Secure hair at night (satin wrap, braids, twists, etc)
-Detangle with lots of conditioner regularly
    -Limit wash and gos
-Shingle hair with gel or any other holding agent when a fro is desired.
-Keep hair moisturized and sealed with oils.

    HTH!
