I used to like this look....

this how I wanted my hair to look back 2-3 years ago. Now it seems too plastic and drippy and product-y to me. And it doesn't have enough volume. I now love a little frizz and volume. I just want to scrunch out the crunch and fluff out their hair.

How about you? Has your preference for the way your hair is styled changed since you began to rock your natural waves, curls, coils, crimps, or whatever texture?

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.

Good example, SBB! And yes, my preference of what looks good has changed too. When I first went CG, I actually used a hair pick (80s styling tool) to break up my curls and fluff it up. Now, I know to leave the curls alone and keep my hands out of my hair to maintain better curls.

This is how I use to wear my hair in middle/and high school. I look at old pictures now and I'm like "what was I thinking!" I welcome the frizz and volume now.

Oh I don't really think there's anything wrong with those girls hair, the blond doesn't really look that producty...does it?

I'd say mine is a little like the redhead but I must admit I'm trying to get more volume and life into it.

Ya, I used to be okay with coercing (sp?) my curls into shape with various gels, mousse, hairspray, etc. Now I can't even stand the feel of product in my hair. I also used to prefer very defined, seperated curls, but now I think they look stringy and dirty.

Now I prefer loose, fluffy curls, like Jacqueline Smith.

Yeah, that hair looks nice enough, but I know it's not really me. It does look sort of product-y and a bit limp, almost. I've always loved days when my hair is at its peak volume and I'm just walking around rocking my "wild" hair.

Their hair looks good. I'm usually one of those who hates producty looks, but their hair doesn't look producty to me. With that said, I tend to go for a fluffier look myself.
That's right, I said it! I wear scrunchies!!

When I first started CG I loaded so much product into my hair that it looked pretty greasy some days and quite often felt really coated. I'm using a lot less product now and prefer the wilder look with volume :)

My hair has a lot more volume than these girls, but I really like the look of the girl's hair in the middle. I wonder if I can achieve it without being over producty??

I wouldn't consider any of those a bad hair day! :dontknow:

I do agree that the blonde looks like she has less product, but I think all three look good!

I don't think they look bad either, esp the blonde. :?: My hair is naturally fuller than those styles, but I don't think they look producty. They look like my hair after I SOTC, just shiny, but not as full. :)

But I think I get what you mean SBB, that you no longer feel the need to conform to the masses, and now love your hair the way it wants to be. :D

Agreed. I wouldn't mind having that much definition, but when my hair's like that it's totally flat.

I think the blonde looks the least producty. She also has the looses curl pattern, which tells me something about the styling philosophy.

I, personally, think their hair looks wonderful. I'm hoping mine will look something like their's once it gets longer. But if it FEELS producty, that'll be a different story. I like hair to feel soft, not stiff.

i agree with you...i used to strive for the "wet, crunchy look" in high school...blech. I've realized in the past year that i've been kind of contradicting the whole "naturally curly" concept. We're all about unleashing your curl...but is it really natural if you have 8 different products in it??

ETA: I forgot to mention that I think all of those ladies' hair is very pretty, it just needs to be scrunched! Plus, their roots are styled kind of funny, in my opinion, probably for less volume.

While I think all three look very pretty and have great curls, they all look too 'done' for my taste. I have come to embrace a more casual and undone look with more volume. What can I say? I miss the 80's and big hair! :laughing2:

I just want to go up to them and scrunch and fluff!!

They all look good and very Ouidadish to me. And the blond, as far as I'm concerned (since I'm a 3c) doesn't really have "curly" hair. She has a wave that they used product on to make it look curly. One breeze and they'd have more volume.
  • SuburbanbushbabeSuburbanbushbabe Posts: 15,402Registered Users
I have a big head. I look at earlier photos of myself and aside from my hair being shorter, the "controlled", slick curls look was too flat for my head. Yet when I saw myself in the mirror it looked large. It's definitely a personal preference, and also my perspective changed over time. I can still look at myself in the mirror and my hair looks large, but take a photo and it looks fine.

I only recently realized this! I finally had the kind of hair day that I thought I always wanted - and hated it. Now everything is about more volume, more volume, some more definition, and more volume. Love big hair!

i think that i would love to have my hair naturally look like that but im done fighting with my hair to make it that way. i could get sorta close to the hairstyle in the middle but all of the gel would make my hair feel so dry. so although my preference didnt change, i dont strive for it.... and since i dont strive anymore im actually starting to like the fullness and softness that mousse gives me...who knows, maybe my opinion will eventually change

That's pretty much my first day hair after wash, condition, and product. It helps with much better 2nd day hair if I just leave it alone and let my pillow SOTC for the next day. :)

You know, it wasn't long ago that I actually strived for hair like the girl in the middle, as her hair is closest to my texture, but it really is too finished looking. As others have said, scrunching and fluffing it up would be an awesome style for that girl, but it would work in some occasions I suppose. Now that Ohio weather has gone berserk, I just shrug and walk out the door, accepting that my hair is going to start expanding like crazy. Any you know what? I actually like it

Me too! With time, I've become more accepting and relaxed about what my hair does, as long as it is in good health. I think that relaxed confidence shows through, even on days when my hair (to me) doesn't look tip top but I walk out the door anyway. Today was such a day, second day hair. I scrunched and fluffed and it wasn't quite doing what I wanted it to do and near the roots are frizzy. I put a Flexi-8 in my handbag just in case and went to work. Some guy in Finance told me he loved my hair.

My face just doesn't look good with my curls that flat against my head. I like them fluffed out a little more, but I still fight with the frizz. I don't think I'll ever like frizz!

As for being more accepting of what my hair does, sometimes when my hair is the messiest (to me), that's when I get all the compliments. Go figure.
