Can oils be drying or is it a hidden protein?

I was loving the Lustrasilk Shea Mango conditioner as a leave in during the cooler months because it perked up and defined my curls so well but as the weather has gotten milder, I'm struggling with frizz and poorly defined curls.
So, I decided to give the Lustrasilk Olive oil a try since my hair seems to like olive oil in conditioners. I've been using it as a rinse out for the past few days and the first couple of days, my hair was great, soft, well defined curls and ringlets. Even my dad who doesn't really notice these kind of things complimented me.

Now something weird is happening to my hair.
Once I get out of the shower my hair feels kind of hard and rope like even though it's soaking wet.
Once it's dry, the curls still have great definition and look shiney but my hair feels rough and coarse.
I've had something similar happen when I use conditioners with jojoba oil for a few days in a row.

These are the ingredients:
Lustrasilk Olive Oil Cholesterol:
Water, Stearamidoproply Dimethylamine, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Olive Oil, Cholesterol, Soybean Oil, Safflower Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Aloe Vera Extract, Fragrance, Vitamine E, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Phosphoric Acid, DMDM Hydantoin, Sisodium EDTA, Yellow # 5, Blue # 1.

I don't see any protein in there.
Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Modified CG, CJ Rehab, JCWDT, KCKT, VO5 Chamomile Tea Therapy, CJDF, HEBE Gel/Mousse, Bioinfusion Rosemary Mint shampoo, occasional protein

Wheat germ oil contains protein. Maybe that's the problem.

i've read that wheat germ oil actually only contains a trace of protein after all the processing.
maybe your hair is too coated w/the oils? do they build up?
maybe skip a couple of days, then go back?

It is weird, when I use butters/oils on my hands I get dry hands. There is no moisture in oil so I would try a moisturizing conditioner without oil for a while then alternate or rotate products.

Thanks for the insight ladies. I will try to leave it out for a few days and see what happens. Now that I think of it, my hair kind of feels the same way it does when I use products with magnesium sulfate. It curls great but it feels rough and dry.

Heather, I get the same thing when I use butters on my hands. I was slathering shea butter on my hands every night before bed and I found that my hands actually became drier after several days of using it.

MSB and Rbb, I'm definitely protein sensitive so maybe it is the wheat germ oil. I never thought oils contained protein.

Stearyl alcohol is drying. When I used the Lustrasilk for a few days in row, my hair got pretty dry too. I attributed it to the alcohol. :dontknow:

This has been my understanding as well, I've never had issues with wheat germ oil and my despises Wheat Protein. Stearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol so it couldn't be that either. It's got to be the Oils.

I need to clear up a common misconception regarding alcohols. Not ALL alcohols are bad. The ones I use in Jessicurl conditioners are actually moisturizing - they're called fatty alcohols and they are what make conditioners creamy and detangling. (This is why it's virtually impossible to find conditioners without these types of alcohols - because they're so good!) The good ones are Lauryl alcohol, Cetyl alcohol, Myristyl alcohol, Stearyl alcohol, Cetearyl alcohol and Behenyl alcohol. The bad ones are SD alcohol, SD alcohol 40, Alcohol denat, Propanol, Propyl alcohol and Isopropyl alcohol. You will never find any of the bad ones in any of my products and are better off avoiding them all together, as you're right - they're HORRIBLE for curly hair.

Eh, don't sweat it Lolo ;)

Magoo I have a lot of issues with too many oils. I avoid them in my washes and rinse outs now. With the exception of olive in Deva & coconut oil in EO Honey Cham. Condish. Jojoba, Shea and Avocado are problematic. What I did when this was a problem for me was a clarifying poo when a Low Poo didn't take care of it, then went heavy on my oil free rinse out. I also stuck with Oil free stylers and condish for a week or so with the exception of LOOC which I used as a LI.

All I know is that I use a lot of oils, of all kinds, but when I started using GVP Conditioning Balm CO, which is full of fatty alcohols, my hair *instantly* responded, dramatically. Oils alone aren't moisturizing, apparently, you need to add moisture for the oils to work. Or something like that. Maybe you should clarify and avoid the oils for awhile, and try something like the GVP or aloe vera for awhile?
I was just thinking of doing a heat-cap DT using my Lustrasilk Shea-Mango this morning, but maybe not. I haven't used it with heat before, but I didn't find that it did much for my hair when I've used it -- in fact, I think it sort of made my hair tangle up.
2-something? Coarse, medium underneath. Mid-back. On CG since 5/9/07.

    Gels: Homemade FSG, Eco-styler
Plus: SOTC or smooth with camellia oil, JC Nourish & Shine

I've got the GVP so maybe I'll give that a try.
The funny thing about the Olive Oil Lustrasilk is that it seems to have perked up my curls and given them so much definition but like I said, they feel awful. Its almost feels like they're going to break if I handle them too roughly. Sound like protein buildup doesn't it?

My hair loves conditioners with fatty alcohols so I know it's not the stearyl alchohol.
DEL, my hair also gets very dry and brittle with jojoba oil so I'm probably reacting the same to one of the oils in the Lustrasilk.
I do know my hair likes olive oil so I may have to do some research for some co's with only olive oil. Or maybe I can just add a dab of olive oil to one of my other conditioners.

also avocado oil a great read!!! No need to overly concern ourselves with protein in Wheat Germ Oil:thumbup:

    http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/curlchemist-avocado-and-wheat-germ-oil

Although I have seen various products advertising that their wheat germ oil contains “many proteins,” the evidence does not support this assertion.

For this reason, most of these oils used in cosmetics and personal care products should contain no more than trace amounts of protein, if any at all.
