So what do I do now?

SunshineGrrlSunshineGrrl Posts: 3,823Registered Users Curl Neophyte
I think I've damaged my hair beyond repair. I decided I no longer wanted to be a hennahead and decided I wanted to go back to my more natural color. So I bleach my hair. And I bleached my hair. And I bleached my hair again! Then I had to repigment, then color my hair. The color isn't great, I think the repigment went awry and I think my curls are toast until it grows out. It seriously looks like a bad perm. Like 80's perm bad. I'm ready to cry because my hair is so bad and I start my cosmetology classes again tonight. Help!

Poor SunshineGrrl. I have no advice but at least you're going to a place tonight where some answers should be available! Maybe the instructors will be able to offer some solutions. If nothing else, you will be a memorable test case for the class... Surely all of you will encounter people in your chairs who've done something similar to their hair and you'll all be asked "What do I do now?"

The thing is...I did everything their way. I followed their instructions (the lady at the beauty supply store was a graduate from the same place) to a t, but it didn't work. I don't know where it went wrong, but I figure my hair's already damaged, why not try to color it again with protein added for a more uniform color? So I sit now, with hair color on my head for the 6th time in 6 days (there was one day of rest in there, with a DT and Protein treatment on it) hoping at least the color will be better and I can slick it back into an updo or ponytail for a few weeks to see if it will bounce back.

OMG... 6 times in 6 days.... Wow step away from the hair dye... i would just color closest to my natural color and let it grow out.... Do you have any pics.....??

Dang girl! I thought I was bad about messing with my hair too much, but you win. So, now the comforting words you've been wanting to hear..... Mine bounced back, yours can too. You've seen my nog, and it's not so bad. A few months ago, I messed with the color and it turned green . I survived the onslaught of corrective processing and my hair actually looks normal now, yours will too so hang in there. Just stop putting chemicals on it and let your scalp heal, and continue doing protein DTs a couple of times a week.

Thanks for all the kind words! The problem is...I can't cut it off because it already hits my chin. Any shorter and I look awful. No short hair do will work, I'm tellin' ya.

The redo today helped to fix it, but it has an ashy cast that borders on green, so I brainstormed with my first instructor and we devised a plan of attack. Sort of. It involves one more processing, but it's a demi-perm, so it helps improve the condition of the hair, has soy protein to repair some of the damage and will take care of the ashy cast to it. The instructor also promised me a bomb-diggity haircut after Memorial day. So if I can live with it (updos and ponys, here I come), she'll fix it as much as she can.

BTW, Keewee, that was the intention in the first place. It's the right shade, now I just need to get the green out of it. I dunno...maybe I'll powwow with same instructor and see if I can pull off a short cut while it's recovering.

Oooh boy! I hope it works out for you! I do agree with the other posters that you might want to back away from the chemicals, but it sounds like you know your stuff much better than I do.

To make you fee a tad better, I did dye my hair three times in 24 hours once about 5 years ago. It was AWFUL, but my hair survived and I didn't know about deep treatment back then.

Just remember that if it doesn't bounce back like it should, hair does grow back and you will get through this. One day, perhaps a few years from now, you'll look back on this and laugh your @$$ off.
I have 3c hair that I haven't straightened in over 5 years. It's just past shoulder length when dry, and almost waist length when pulled straight.

05/12/09 Still CG. Cowashing with VO5 Lavender Luster. I then condition with Giovanni Smooth as Silk. Styling with VO5 Lavender Luster conditioner with my wide-toothed comb.

I would go with products that are extra gentle especially in the shampoo area.

I'm kindof experiencing the same thing as you sunshine though to a much lesser extent! I've died my hair about 3 or 4 times in the last 2 months and my hair's in pretty bad condition at the moment. I cut a lot off my ends a few days ago which has definitely helped but I'm planning on doing some coconut oil treatments as soon as i can get my hands on some.

Bless your heart, I'd cry too. Yikes. I'd try the coconut oil, that sounds like a good (chemical free, safe) option.

sounds like you need a guardian angel like in Grease!

This might be a dumb question but, is it really noticeable? Sometimes we notice stuff more on ourselves than others do. if it's not too noticeable, just hold out a bit before you make any drastic measures!

The coconut oil is a good idea. I need to go buy some.

Burgundy-it's not really noticeable when it's pulled back, so I'll just become creative with updos for a while, or pull it back into some creative ponytails.

I'm much calmer now. Go figure, the red dot came to visit on the same day. School went a long way in calming me down. I'm back in a rhythm now (sort of) and my instructor will help me fix it.

I'm giving my hair a week off, give it some tlc, protein and DT's and see where the damage stands. Then I might do something. I only have to style my hair until Thursday when classes are done for the week, then I can not wash it for the whole weekend and have some coconut (what do you think about shea butter?) oil (or what about using up my JC N&S?) soaked into it. I think I might drag my mom to Whole Foods to get some coconut oil. Any other recommendations for the store?

:laughing1: Oh!! Well dang, that explains it right there (the obsessive dyeing, that is). I am forbidden (by my husband and friends) to do ANYTHING to my hair when I have pms. Not even a trim. I have a long, sad history of violating my hair in all sorts of horrid ways when I was pmsing, only to have total hair remorse once the red bomb finally dropped. When I tell my husband I'm going to get a trim, he always asks when I'm due for my period. LOL.

It's a great idea. I'd do a lot of heavy oilings / deep treatments with natural oils for the next couple of weeks.

Found my coconut oil and put it in my hair last night. It helped the parts that weren't beyond redemption, but the extremely damaged portions couldn't absorb it. I got up this morning and decided to bite the bullet and go get it cut.

I made an appointment with my school and the poor girl was so conservative and it was such a mess, the instructor out on the floor had to do most of the cut. It's very short in back and in an a-line that lands just at my chin when straight. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to go straight for a while until my hair recovers. Good to know I can let it go for 3 days out of the week and try to get the curls to come back.

One nice thing the instructor said (sort of) was that this cut was going to be kind of difficult for me because my hair was so curly. Not by my remebrances, but okay.

It's still crispy and will be for a while, but the good news is that after she cut off all the "cotton candy" parts as she called it, the color looks much better. She even stated she liked the color. So the color stays. For now.

Yeah, I usually try to avoid drastic measures during that time, but this one blindsided me. I woke up and was like...WTF, then looked at my pack of BC and lo and behold...time for my period. Nice. I guess I should keep better track.

So sorry to hear of your hair woes, Sunshine. At least it isn't falling out in clumps. Sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone. Thankfully your hair will grow and recover. Give it extra tender treatment for sure.
