when you see a long multi-page thread...

...what is your first assumption as to what it is about?

disclaimer: this poll is intended to be funny. i'm not trying to start controversy or claim that any of the above topics are not real issues. it's just funny to me because MOST super-long threads tend to be about one of the above topics.

I said race, but there is a certain formula for all debates on this board (particularly race though) which brings us to the multi-page threads. It is always the same cries of ignorance on both sides, which always leads to the predictable personal attacks on the opposing side's grammar, knowledge of world history, and personal experiences.

Of course there have been many threads that seemed so innocent that have turned awry, i.e. shower curtains, PT Cruisers, and hoo-ha washing.

One of the top 3, usually. But more often, RACE.

Race then religion. Luckily there is always at least one expert to tell me why and how I am completely and utterly wrong in each category.

but why shouldn't it? can anyone on here disagree with the fact that many (i won't say most for fear of being accused of generalizing) multi-page threads on here are about one of the above topics?

I've actually started to ignore a lot of the multi page threads. They tend to be redundant.

I've never read through the EZ Cheeze thread, but I've often been curious about how a thread about a processed, canned cheese product could be controversial. That and the uncrustables. :?

It seems to me like most multi-page threads start out with totally innocent, take off into race or something like that, but then always end up with people quoting bible verses back at eachother. I swear, the first post I get to in a long thread quoting a bible verse I usually close the thread and not open it again.

Seriously, if you ever want to talk about me behind my back, just start quoting bible verses for a few posts, and then go nuts making fun of me! You know I'll never read it!

I agree with the Bible quotes thing completely killing a thread for me, mainly because I am not Christian, so the Bible verses A. Don’t make sense to me, and B. Do nothing to help me see the opposing viewpoint’s side. Also, those Bible quotes are always out of control with their length, and I just don’t have the patience or desire to read them.

And JESUS walked across the flannelgraph sea, waving at His peeps (Ani's thread made me say that! ) , walking on the water... His boy Peter wanted to to step out onto the fuzzy blue flannelgraph water, but Peter's faith was just as un-steady as the waves of the sea, and he started to sink...

Man, that Who Me?'s a real snot bag, isn't she? I mean, who does she think she is, anyway? Uggh!

Then JESUS called out to Peter, and held His hand out toward him... He reminded Peter that He was in control of the waves and the fuzzy blue flannelgraph sea, and Peter realized that he could walk on the water just like JESUS if he had faith. So they walked on the water together, just JESUS and Peter.

Parenting can be another one (spanking, breastfeeding, c-sections, natural birth/medicine, homeschool, etc.).

I can understand the Bible thing being annoying if you don't believe it, I guess, but I don't see Scriptures popping up very often, actually, and never out of context. If *you* make a claim about something in the Bible, it's relevant that people would refute or back that claim up with something from the Bible. Most of the time, from my seat, it's the people who don't read the Bible or believe in the Bible or whatever who bring up something negative or even erroneous about the Bible or the church, and then people who do believe respond. If you don't want to hear or read about it, it would probably be best not to bring it up.

To keep it light  This is a general public service announcement. I really don't have the memory to retain who might does this, so I'm responding to the comments, not specific posters.

And to keep it even lighter, I know I am one of the people who will be talking about the Bible when the opportunity presents itself. I also start threads about it from time to time, but those never become long, I guess because people are ignoring them.

    sorry, I keep forgetting stuff

The original topic is about turtles.

One person washes their turtle once a week. Someone else washes their turtle twice a week and thinks the first person is a filthy loser. A fight ensues.

There are too many turtles crossing the borders illegally. One person thinks the President should kick them out of the country. Another person thinks we should give them green cards. A fight ensues.

One person believes turtles are angels sent by God to show us the way. Another person thinks turtles are evil pagan symbols. A fight ensues.

A painted turtle and a sea turtle apply for a job. The painted turtle gets the job. The sea turtle cries 'racism!'. A fight ensues.

    guano - I love turtles.
