CurlTalk

Ever have the urge to...

Tell someone you can tell their hair is supposed to be curly? I see so many girls on campus that mash their hair into flat straightness, and I just want to shake them and say, "YOU'RE CURLY! GET OVER IT!"

And then of course refer them to nc.com.

It's hard to contain myself, let me tell you.

Anyone else?

It happens to me sometimes. It's so easy for me to spot women who straighten their hair and I always think it doesn't quite look right on them--like it's just not a comfortable fit no matter how they try. But I know how it is. I used to straighten too.

Haha, yes! Or I will see someone with curly hair but who needs to do more, like it needs to be defined more! I have told my DH many times, "I wish I could just hand her a card." And in my imagination this card would say "Naturally Curly.com." And the person would go here and learn all about what to do to get their curl to be the best it can be!! :)

I don't get the urge to alter the styling habits but I do get the urge to cut!!! When I see someone with thick, all-one-length, triangle-shaped hair, I am sorely tempted to cut it into a more flattering shape.

Actually there are Curl Ambassador cards for naturallycurly.com that you can hand out. I received some just recently. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the e-mail address was that I sent my request to. A search for "Curl Ambassador" should bring it up reasonably quickly, though.

I used to straighten all the time, too, but I agree with curlygirl! I just want to tell them, look, ditch the poo and you're home-free!

I don't exactly walk up to total strangers and tell them to stop straightening their hair, but I have been giving a fair few folk the url for naturally curly - I'm a bit curl guerilla!

I do it when I get a curly compliment. I'll ask if they're a closet curly. You'd be amazed how surprised they are. Don't realize that their hair looks tortured!

I've never flat out told someone I could tell, but I always tell them in my head! :p Because I used to do the same thing before I learned to embrace my curls - I used to straighten them into submission. But the thing is, the peeves I had about the way my hair looked is the reason I can always spot it on someone else. Those certain crimps they miss in the backc, the slight poofing and curling at the root on humid days, and then it's stick straight from there on down, that extra perfectly straight frizziness on the ends. You can't fool me, I used to visit all of those horrors upon my hair. And you can always tell.

I have this urge all the time. I want to go up to every curly and tell them to stop killing their hair. I would probably just end up offending a bunch of people though :)

I haven't said for fear of offending the masses, but when I'm on the train going to work... I find that I have to repress the urge to stand up in my seat and start pointing them all out.

You... and You... and you... and you there, hiding behind the Glamour magazine... STOP TORTURNING YOUR HAIR!!!! EMBRACE YOUR INNER CURL!!!!!!!!!!!!

And then I take another sip of coffee and go back to my soduku.

I was in my home office this week and another worker was asking another worker (my friend) a question. She could have the best curly hair but it was MAJOR frizz with a couple of ringlets on the end-it looked she had brushed it. When she walked off - I said to my friend - she needs some conditioner!!! My friend knows I am a PJ - she said lets tackle her and you can squirt some hair products on her.

Haaah! I've wanted to douse a couple of noggins with conditioner too, I hear you.

Since going CG, there aren't a lot of people I figured would understand, and sure enough, they look at me like I'm nuts. I mean, forget that my hair is healthy, shiny, and looks great - "You don't shampoo? Eewwww!!!" Surprisingly enough, my boyfriend has been very "live and let live" about it (him and his totally straight hair!).

So recently, he had bought a box of Kellog's Raisin Bran, and they were doing a free tee shirt offer. Since he's always doing paint jobs and dirty yard work around the house, he can always use a spare tee shirt, so he sent away for it - but he never took a look at what it looked like. Plus, he's a pretty big guy. So the shirt arrives in his size, and it's this GIGANTIC, bright purple shirt with the Kellogg's Raisin Bran sun on the front! I mean, it's totally dorky looking anyway, but then picture it in a men's XXL. So he says to me, "Hey, do you want this? You can dry your hair with it, it's huge!"

Haha, sometimes I see someone with bad-looking curls and want to tell her about this site--then I remember all the times I decide I just don't feel like caring and go out with junk hair! Imagine if someone tried to "introduce me to the cg method" on such a day--I'd feel so silly and ugly XDD

There is a little girl in my daughter's pre-school class that has the most gorgeous 3b/c hair. I want so badly to give her mom a sample of [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] and tell her how to take care of her little one's hair, but I'm afraid it might offend her.

I don't do that to other people, but I do bother my cousin with encouragement and compliments. She's really insecure about her hair, and I always try to encourage her. Her hair's about.. 3a/3b, really gorgeous. When we were at the pool one time she was too scared to put her head underwater, but when she noticed that I was doing it and it didn't bother me, she did it also.
    :) I was like "chyeaah!".

But you should just let people be with their hair. If they want to straighten it everyday, let em. Obviously when they're ready they'll go on google and type in "Natural Curls" or something like that. I know I did when I was getting fed up with straightening, and it brought me to this site.
It's like.. you know how mad people get when they tell you "Oh, I wonder what you would look like with straight hair.." .. that's probably how they would feel if you started doing that to them. Leave them be. It's their body, their hair.

J-jill, I totally agree; I would never go up to anyone (barring my sisters/close relatives/very close friends) and say, "Wow you should condition that frizzy hair!"

I just meant, it drives me crazy when people with potentially GORGEOUS hair treat it that way.

Actually, I don't/wouldn't get upset if someone expressed that they wonder what I'd look like with straight hair. I do look quite different.

I don't really look to closely at people, but I have noticed this one lady who goes to my church who must have some pretty curly hair. It looks exactly like mine does straightened... and I think it looks a little bad. I don't know her at all, and even if I did I probably would not say anything.

My violin teacher is a curly, but she doesn't straighten. It just looks a little frizzy and undefined. I just wish I could throw out her shampoo and brush.

There must be something about curlies that we can tell other curlies no matter how much they hide. I definitely always want to tell people I can tell their hair is curly and help them learn to care for it. My personal favourite is when girls try to pretend their hair is naturally straight, but there's always a chunk in the back that's still wavy. Subtle. ;-)

    YES! SOOO MUCH!

There are two girls I go to school with that have chemically straightened their hair until it is crispy - literally. Its all dry and stiff.

They were complaining one day and I shouted. "GO NATURAL! GOD GAVE YOU CURLS!!!"

I got stared out but at least I got the message across.
