Friends & Telephone Calls

Frau's post about the wedding photo situation, and her comment about calling her friend last night got me thinking.....

Do you expect an immediate return call when you call a friend and leave a message? I'm not talking about calls regarding something very specific that may have a deadline---like are you still planning to pick me up in the morning, or go shopping with me tomorrow, type of "need to know" messages.

For me, I might not return the call for a week, or even longer. I just don't feel that there are any expectations that I follow some unwritten rule to return a call promptly to friends calling. I just am not always in the mood to chat, or I'm busy, or whatever....

What do ya'll do when it comes to telephone messages from friends?

ETA: Darn it dropped my last option, Whenever no biggie, that's my vote!!!

It depends. Most of the time I never think to call back until it's late at night or because of the time difference it's too late. Usually I'll call within the next day or two depending on the circumstances. I voted 2 days in your poll.

I try to return the call the same day. If someone calls me it's usually important, at least important enough for me to talk to them! I guess I expect the same (call by the next day) but my friends usually have similar 'policies'. The exceptions I make are for single parent friends. They have enough on their plate without worrying that I'll get all upset because they didn't drop everything for me. In that case, I feel within a week is desired, but if it doesn't happen, I'm not upset.
ETA I put next day at the least.

I hate the phone with a passion, so I'm terrible about returning phone calls.

Yeah that's me too. I just wondered if I was weird or not.

I mean, it never dawned on me that there might be some kind of expectation attached to a phone message from a friend.

I sometimes send my long distance friends cards in the mail just to say hello, or that I was thinking about them. Like the first day of Spring I sent blank cards that had bright flowers on the front. I just wrote a little note inside. I had no expectation of a return note or anything, nor did I expect to start a pen-pal thing or anything. I was just sending a note of to a friend. That's how I treat the phone calls, no strings attached.

Friends and family are lucky if I listen to the message, seriously. I just deleted 13 messages without listening, haven't done the cell yet, probably half that many at least. If it's that important they will keep calling, and they know I check e-mail. Hate. The. Phone.

(I do regularly check caller ID to see if it's my grandmother or something, she's the only one I call back right away!)

I try to call back within 24 hours. I don't like the phone either, but I figure if someone took time to call me it means they want to talk to me. And while I don't like the phone, I love my family and friends, so I call back.

I'd probably be damned pissed if I called a friend or a family member and they totally blew me off. If I'm picking up the phone it means I want to talk to you sometime this century!

Yup. Pretty much as soon as I get the message I'm calling them if I have 5-10 minutes. Friends/family don't usually call me "just because". The want/need to talk to me. I try to make them as much a priority as possible.
    And I loathe the phone.

Usually when I get messages it's too late to call back, whether because of time zones or when I get home or whatever. I tend to send off an email "hey, got your message, but I can't call back this late. I wanted you to know I'm not ignoring you, though, and hopefully we'll get in touch soon!"

I don't call anyone after 9pm unless I know for sure it's ok, so if I know it'll be a while before I can call back before then, I'll ask when's ok to call.

I'll usually call back within a couple days....but I HATE talking on the phone (unless it's my sister). I hate chit chatting over the phone...I'd rather talk in person, IM, or email.

If it's something important, like with a deadline, I'll leave that on the message so they know.

Other than that, I have no expectations of timing for call backs, and I rarely leave messages myself if I have no purpose and am just calling to say hi. We all have caller ID, it works, it's fine.

Sometimes we'll screen and sometimes we probably are screened. Again, who cares. If someone doesn't feel like chatting on the phone at the very moment, no sweat off my back.
