long hair care during sleep

freckles&curlsfreckles&curls Posts: 1Registered Users
I would like some ideas on how to keep long hair from being tangled and frizzy from sleeping. My hair is at its longest ever (halfway down my back) and is now starting to bother me when I sleep, besides needing a conditioner every morning. I use a satin pillow case. I have tried using a cloth covered pony tail holder on top of my head, but this has not really worked.

I think I am a 2b.

Have you tried braiding your hair into one or two braids? Or even twists? Another suggestion is a satin bonnet--they are available at Sally's or other beauty supply stores.

I have the same problem. I have been looking online for a 100% Silk sleep cap, already using a silk pillowcase. I have heard that silk might be better then satin on other websites. The closest thing that I have found yet is

It looks interesting but I don't want an integrated cap.

Mine's about BSL and I find a pineapple has helped a lot in the past. But it's starting to get too long to be as effective. Botticellibabe was doing a plopped pineapple with a satin-y sleep cap - her hair is probably hipbone length. If I can find one of those with a wide enough band (to prevent the crevice on my forehead), I'm going to try that.

My hair is almost BSL and I've started putting my hair in two braids when I sleep. I've noticed a big difference in my hair overall. Of course, I get funny looks and rude comments when I'm at work (as a paramedic) when I run calls at night and my hair is in braids.

I make a ponytail with 4 or 5 Goody ouchless elastics down the length of my hair. This is easier for me than braiding, and keeps my hair from getting tangled. I've tried using sleep caps but they never stay on.

I'm still putting it all up in a pineapple, how come this isn't working for others with hair to the middle of their back?

My hair is in a single braid and I pin it to the top of my head with the ends tucked underneath, using a doo-rag and satin cap for naps and bedtime.

    Hi,
I have hip length 3b/c hair. I used to braid my hair in a single braid, but it straightens out my curls. Lately I have been putting it up in a bun at the top of my head and letting the curly ends loose, but this is making my head sore by the morning. Does anyone else have a better idea?

Try two or three loose twists.

I have hair down to my butt (well it would be if straight, it bounces up to lower back height) and I think keeping long hair detangled and unflattened at night is actually easier than shorter hair. If I've just showered I put it in a scrunchie on top of my head (a la Pebbles from the Flintstones, what some people call a pineapple) or if it's dry I just flip it up over the pillow. Voila, I can toss and turn and the hair doesn't get affected. You could switch to a statin pillowcase for even less frizzing, but it couldn't be simplier.

I put mine in a pineapple most nights. But, if I have some free time Ido a couple of very loose braids and Tuesday night I twisted it and put on a satin bonnet. All of those work for me. But, I also sleep on satin sheets and satin pillowcase (I'm hot natured and satin cools me off).

I am reviving this thread!! I originally responded to this post in May of '09 (as you can see I know) and my hair was BSL stretched and maybe APL curly. Therefore, the pineapple worked fabulously. Now, not so much.

It's been 8 months so of course my hair has grown and is now WL stretched (in November) and BSL curly. So the pineapple isn't really working. My hair falls to the sides and in my face. I wake up during the middle of the night thinking something is crawling on me (really not funny so stop laughing)!! I bought an XL- Bonnet, but it kinda crushes my curls. I could get away with it, but I would prefer not to and obviously that won't work in another 6 months.

Any ideas besides braiding it? I was thinking about ordering a SatinSakk. But, from the picture below it would would not be long enough and my hair would be scrunched up in it once its on my head. Any help would be appreciated!!

OK when mine was very long (past butt length but not near knee length) I did this:

Put hair in ponytail at top of head, but do not pull the hair all the way through, leave a loop and a tail.
Loop the tail of hair and pull it through the first loop of hair, again leaving a tail hanging out
If this doesn't take up all the length, loop the remaining hair and pull it through the loop of hair you just made. Tuck the end into the scrunchie.

This is hard to explain in words but was not difficult to do, and made a quick "sleep bun" that stayed in but was very easy to take down in the morning, at which point I almost always braided the hair for the day.

Oh, and NaturallyCurlyEnvoy, I think the SatinSakk might still work, maybe upside down so you could lay the length on the pillow instead of laying on it. You could bend your hair under instead of scrunching it up, or even if you did scrunch it, it wouldn't be tight and if it held still the light scrunching might preserve your curls without tangling them.
