Really dry after co washing ???

tinahtinah Registered Users Posts: 1,195 Curl Neophyte
Hi, I just started co washing last night and today my hair is horribly dry. Did I do something wrong? I used V05 kiwi lime squeeze for my co wash. Rubbed it into my scalp really well and let it sit while I finished my shower (about five minutes) rinsed it out really well, then conditioned with Biolage conditioning balm-the original, no cones. Went to bed with wet hair. Today my hair is horribly dry, more than it's been in a long time. Is this normal? I thought, if anything, it might be a little weighed down and limp today, not super dry.

Any suggestions?

I'm not 100% sure, but part of the problem might be that you're leaving the co-wash in for a few minutes. Basically, I use my co-wash as I would shampoo -- I lather and scrub out all the dirt and grease and then rinse all that dirt out right away. Then I put in my thicker conditioner and leave that in while I shave my legs and stuff. If your hair is super dry, maybe leave it in for a few extra minutes and see how that works.

    Hope this helps : o )

Hair type: Fine, fairly porous, shoulder length when curly. Probably a 3a or 3b with tight ringlets now that it's getting longer. Hair loves aloe, hates glycerin.

Co-Wash: Suave Naturals Aloe and Waterlily (my HG conditioner!)
Rinse Out: Garnier Sleek and Shine, Trevor Sorbie curl conditioner (UK only, unfortunately)
Stylers: KCCC, AG Re:coil, TIGI mousse, but open to suggestions!
Gels: BRHG (my one and only)

The amt of time you leave the co-wash in shouldn't make a difference. Maybe your hair is craving more moisture, you may need to use some of your rinse out condish as a LI. You may even need a more moisturizing Co-wash, the V05 Kiwi is a clarifying condish (one of my faves cuz it doesn't weigh me down) maybe try the Suave or one of the moisturizing formulas of V05.

    Hi,
I noticed the same thing even though I'm only two and half weeks in to being a mod curly. I can't help but think it's because I used to use a lot of silicones in my hair and I was so used to feeling much 'smoother' hair. I think it just feels extra dry to me (which I do have dry hair but it's scary dry after I started this) I've straightened for a few years now so of course I have done some major damage. I am experiencing different things daily though. Last night while doing my cowash and then rinsing my last heavier conditioner out, my hair felt like I had vaseline through it. My hair felt awful, like it was dirty (straw like, even while wet) and hadn't been cleaned and I literally had something very resistant in it.
It does seem to be okay once I put in my leave in and my products to style. However by the end of the day my hair seems gross, I don't want to touch it, I just want to pull it up.
I'm thinking there are different stages to this 'becoming a curly girl'. I have the book and I will continue to research and try different things. I hope you have better luck. I will continue to deep condition at night. You might want to try that and sleep in the deep conditioner.
I'm going to keep looking to see if I can't find my what my problem might be!!

When I go to sleep with even damp hair, my hair becomes a nest. A dry brittle nest. I always try to shower early enough to make sure it gets totally dry. If its too late when I start, I will diffuse to make sure its dry right before bed.

Also, have you tried to oil your ends before bed? Many people say that it helps the hair. I try to, but usually I forget... so first thing in the morning, if its not a hair washing day, I will oil my hair well (my hair seems to soak it up like no ones business).

If you didn't get all the silicones coating your hair washed away before starting CG, then that residue will leave your hair feeling dry.

    Hi ewenique,
So, if this is the case for me, which is very possible, do you suggest I wash with some shampoo? I bought the Suave Shampoo to start CG.
I've been doing lots of DT and I'm still really dry. I would have thought by 3 weeks in, my cowashing would have slipped out the rest of 'cones left in my hair? I don't cowash daily, every other usually.
