Ajidahk, like you, I like a little sweet in my salad! I also looooove walnuts or pecans in there too.

My very, very favorite salad though is a classic - the Waldorf salad.

I have a specific salad equation that has to have three elements. A very sweet component (like fruit or dried fruit). A salty component (like shaved parmesan, nuts or seeds) and good crunch.

As long as I have those the... the greens, the dressing, etc, make no difference to me! :)

I'll have to try the walnuts/peacans in my salad. I once tried sunflower seeds and didn't care for it to much because the taste of the seeds were overwhelming.

    I'm curious, what's a Waldorf salad?

Oh my GOSH, woman. You don't know what you're missing!

It has apples, grapes and toasted walnuts in it. It's dressed with simple mayo - we use light mayo.

Here's a link to a recipe if you ever want to try it: /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.elise.com%2Frecipes%2Farchives%2F001032waldorf_salad.php" class="Popup

ETA: That recipe doesn't have you toss the salad, which we do. We also use some spinach along with the lettuce.

I love my salads! I have to have a fruit: either strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, orange segments, apple slices.

I like bitter greens like fricess (sp) and radichio mixed with spinach or arugala or romaine. I HATE iceburg lettace; it has no flavor.

I like garlicy dressings: Italian, Greek, sun-dried tomato vinegrette.

I also want cucumbers, green or red bell peppers, tomatoes - the tiny grape ones, radishes, carrots, purple cabbage, celery.

I like to sometimes throw in beans for protein, either raw green beans, raw green peas, or canned blackbeans or pintos or chick peas, rinsed and drained.

I love slivered almonds, diced walnuts or pecans. I don't like peanuts or cashews in salads though.

Sometimes I add croutons and cheese and crumbled bacon, either real or Bacos or vegetarian bacon.

ITA. I hate iceberg too. My friends think it's pretty weird that I eat dark lettuce and spinach, but they're missing out. Iceberg has no vitamins!.. I love garlicy dressings too and although I generally don't like crutons, I like the homemade, kinda soft, buttery ones. Do you know what I'm talking about?

Romaine hearts and baby spinach, chicken, avocado, tomatos, all diced small and tossed generously in a light-but-creamy dressing. OMFG.

    (Now I really want salad....)

ETA I totally forgot about croutons!! Love em.

I'm eating a greek salad with grilled chicken right now (all that talk about feta over on that thread, LOL) - yummy except it has a lot of iceberg, which I don't like . . . it must be well disguised as in this salad. And at least it's mostly romaine.

Various combinations of the following for my salads - I'm very picky about them:

    Field greens/spring mix/mescalune/romaine/leaf/bibb
    Cucumbers
    Tomatoes
    Broccoli or Alfalfa Sprouts
    Broccoli Slaw
    Shredded carrots
    Purple cabbage
    Mushrooms
    Hearts of palm
    Artichoke hearts
Banana, pepperoncini & similar peppers, but not green bell pepper!
    Minimal onions, chives or scallions
    Mandarin oranges
    Dried cranberries or cherries
    Strawberries
    Pears
    Apples
    Various nuts and seeds
Cheeses, especially feta or cottage cheese
Real bacon bits, ham, chicken, or turkey
The little bitty chow mein noodles, not the big hard ones - can we say "picky"?, LOL!

Prefer various types of vinaigrette- more acidity than oil, if any, sweet and sour dressings, sesame ginger, or even just lemon juice, plain balsamic or other vinegars - No mayo-based dressings, the only creamy dressings I'll eat are buttermilk, yogurt, sour cream, or cottage cheese-based.

Usually no croutons for me unless they're just really good homemade ones, preferrably whole grain and not greasy.

Greens must be impeccably fresh with no white stemmy/chunky pieces. No bagged greens as a rule - can't stand the smell! No spinach - although I love it, it's almost like I'm allergic to it the past 10-15 years, even the slightest amount, so I have to always be careful to ask about spring mixes, etc. :pukel:

Hate it when you go out to eat, get a tossed salad and there are no onions in it. A salad has to have onions.

I do like chick peas, hard boiled egg, cheese and tomatoes too.

My favorite salad is a new one for me. It includes:
    spinach
    sliced strawberries
    sliced avocado
    chopped pecans
homemade dressing (evoo, lemon juice, acv, honey & sugar)

In general I love love love salads. I could eat them every single day. This particular salad I listed is something DH made us for Valentine's Day. I think he got it from allrecipes.
There are only a few things I can think of that I don't like on my salad: mushrooms, olives, salt. Everything and anything else is a go in my book!

I just made a very good buttermilk dressing....

    1/2 low fat buttermilk
    1/2 low fat sour cream
    1 Tbs apple cider vinegar
    2 Tbs green onions (scallions)
    2 Tbs parsley
    1 clove minced garlic
    Salt & Pepper

I use very green lettuces, but I also like to use iceberg lettuce for the crunch.

I like mixed greens or baby spinach for greens. Iceberg isn't my favorite. As for toppings, I like almost anything but tree nuts because I'm allergic to them.

Salad nicoise, I know there are green beans, tuna, black olives, and I forget what else.

The wild alaskan salmon salad at cosi has salmon (dur) capers, arugula, spinach, capers, red onion, pesto sauce, maybe a bit of egg, carrot shreds, and a vinigrette. YUM!!!

Or spring mix with italian dressing, maybe a piece of baked salmon on top, and I'm good.

Or your regular iceberg salad with carrots, a bit of cheese, croutons and ranch dressing.

I can't put nuts or fruits on my salads cause I'm allergic.

    Now I want salad.

    My favorite salad includes:

    - Mixed greens
    - A little bit of iceberg. Not too much! Just a bit mixed in.
    - Soy nuts
    - Sunflower seeds
    - Candied walnuts and/or almonds (SO good! And it seems weird to have them in a salad with the rest of these ingredients, but it works!)
    - Fried or grilled chicken
    - Croutons
    - Lots of cheese (all different kinds)
    - Hard boiled eggs
    - Bacon
    - French fries

With some ranch drizzled on top. Or some homemade Italian. Yum!

As you can see, I don't like healthy salads much. :laughing1:

    My salads are pretty simple.

    One of my favorites:
baby spinach or a dark lettuce
thinly sliced "rings" of Spanish (purple) onion
    Sliced strawberries
    Poppyseed dressing

    Or:

Red leaf, butter lettuce, or romaine
    sliced mushrooms
    chopped red bell pepper
    sliced green onions
    Toasted pine nuts or walnuts
    cucumber, very thinly sliced
