2c/3a's-no styling products?

OnduleeOndulee Posts: 1,264Registered Users
I think I'm a 2c/3a thin, with medium texture, highish porosity and low elasticity.

I hate using styling products of any kind and am looking for advice from 2's on how to DT and moisturize my hair back to health w/o loading my hair up with a bunch of products that I will not stick with. I just want my hair to be strong, shiny and frizz free. I'm not terribly interested in increasing my curl pattern, and here it comes...combing doesn't bother me.( i know sacrelige, right?) My hair is gross right now, with crispy canopy so I'm mainly looking for repair and moisture.

Can I get the glossy wavy smooth hair I want w/o styling stuff?

Thanks for any advice

Try using just plain FOTE AVG. It'll aid in moisturization, frizz and definition. I get no crunchiness from it, but some say they do but that it scrunches right out.

The aubrey organics line of conditioners are really good.
I too don't like too much stuff in my hair-after I condition with one of these conditioners I put in a nickel size amount of Donna Marie honey and aloe jelly in wet hair and that is it!
Both lines are very moisturizing and light at the same time, depends on how much you use though.

Yesterday I used the Sally's GVP version of Biolage conditioning balm. I also used a little of it as a leave-in instead of my real leave-in and then air dried. I had some frizz but not nearly as much as I expected. Also if you do want to use a product it is easier if you just bring your gel or whatever in the shower with you. I agree with the FOTE AVG suggestion too.

As far as DT I make my own at home. I use random amounts of coconut milk, avocado, banana, honey, olive oil...really whatever I have around or feel my hair needs. I have found that the coconut is really helping in the winter. Here are links to some site with recipes.

i love coconut oil as a over night DT, i put it on sometime during the evening by the time I'm ready for bed it's pretty much dry and I wash it out in the morning.

In the fall, I went a couple weeks just using Giovanni Direct Leave-In. No styling products. I became over conditioned though. If your hair is drier than mine, it might work for you.

thanks 2's for your replies, I tried the FOTE gel and my hair detested it. It was brittle and hard and even frizzier than ever. I'm going to get some of the food grade AVG and try that though, maybe it will be better.

BTW, I love this, It perfectly describes me every day!

You could try making your own flax seed gel. I love it. It's a real light hold and adds shine...

so Saturday night I did a great co-wash with pretty strong scalp massage, but my hair was almost as "squeaky clean" as when I was using sulphate shampoos. What's up with that? I'm using Suave naturals strawberry for co-wash and I'm surprised my hair was so squeaky.

So, I thought I should do a DT with K-Pak, I left it on for an hour under a foil cap, wrapped in a towel. I rinsed and my hair felt so great, there were no tangles and shower combing was so easy and smooth. I moisturized with 5 minutes of Moisture Maniac and then lightly rinsed. I plopped for 10 minutes and left to air dry for a few hours.

This is where everything went wrong. As my hair was drying I was horrified to see within just 15 minutes or so, wild frizz developing, I carefully touched my hair and it felt soft like pillow stuffing(you know the fibre fill stuff in those accent cushions?) The volume just kept getting bigger and bigger and I just wanted to cry, so I took some Moisture Maniac straight and rubbed on my palms and rubbed quite a bit through-out all sections of my hair thinking it was losing moisture. That didn't seem to help at all and as soon as that dried, my hair seemed to be almost standing on end.

It was really late at this point so I went to bed thinking that sleeping on it would mash it down somewhat and there was a teeny bit less volume on Sunday am, but not really noticeable.

I had somewhere to go so all I could do was throw on a headband to keep the hair around my face held down and I just had to ignore this big floating nimbus cloud around the rest of my head and shoulders the rest of the day....I could see everyone looking at it but they were all nice enough to compliment my makeup and not mention "THE HAIR".

What happened? I'm so new to this, and I thought I was lucky that I seemed to find things that my hair liked, but now I have no idea what to do! Help!

:farao: this is sort of the size of my hair yesterday, I felt like I was wearing some sort of weird hat! But my hair was not crispy or crunchy feeling, it was very soft so i'm really confused.

Frizzly-I know you weren't trying to be funny but this part made me LOL:

I can totally relate. I am having a horrible time staying CG. I'm learning so much about my hair, but hate the fact that I actually have to be around real people in public while not knowing what is going on. I feel like people are just staring at the product of my obvious ineptitude in dealing with the hair I was born with. Needless to say, you aren't alone.

If you come up with anything, let me know. I hate gel. I just want soft, non-frizzy, shiny, gel free waves. Why is that so hard? :crybaby:

I'll second that "relate".... All I want is soft, non-frizzy, shiny waves and curls!

My way is not perfect but I'm using a mousse wich I find has a really soft hold and it does add shine. It's an "approved" mousse so I can use it even though I only wash my hair with conditioner.
It's called WELLA Styling Mousse, Volume & Hold and it's in a light green bottle. Although, I don't know if you have it where you live. I live in Sweden and it's a common brand here but I don't know about the U.S.
Anyway, I just shift some of it through my hair when it's wet and then diffuser dry or just let it air dry. And it works on dry hair in the mornings to, I just scrunch some in to the ends of my hair and go. If it gets a bit to crunchy I just scrunch the hair and it goes away but the waves and curls stay. That's all the styling I do and all the styling I have patience for...

    Best of luck to you!

hey ladies, thanks for your commiseration. It helps to know I'm not the only one with "jungle hair". It takes about 5 days of sleeping on my hair to actually make it somewhat smooth. I already know my hair hates AVG so I bought some personal lube and cut it with water (3 parts lube to 1 part water and mixed)and put in a pump bottle. Next time I'm co-washing I'm just going to use Suave, Moisture Maniac and some of my PL mix on sopping wet hair and then plop and see if that kills some frizz....this is getting quite expensive, trying to make my hair behave.

Lazywaves: I'll update here if the lube does what I think it should....

    K-Pak Reconstructor has mineral oil.
Water (Deionized) ((aqua)), Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Mineral Oil, Glycol Stearate, PEG 8 Distearate, Sodium Chloride, Ceteth 2, Hydrolyzed Human Hair Keratin ((Quadramine Complex)), Laurdimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Human Hair Keratin, Myristyl Myristate, Citric Acid, Fragrance ((parfum)), Sorbic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Oil, Hydrolyzed Yeast, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Keratin Amino Acids, Methylparaben, Propylparaben

It causes the symptoms you described. Mineral oil coats the hair and prevents moisture from entering the hair shaft. The only way to remove it is a poo. Possibly lowpoo, maybe SLS.

I normally don't use anything containing mineral oil or other petroleum products, but I do very occasionally use GVP's version of K-Pak, and the bit it contains has caused me no problems. I low-poo occasionally, though. It doesn't seem to require SLS to remove.

BUT it's only supposed to be left on for 1-2 MINUTES, not the hour that you did it, Frizzly. Maybe that has something to do with your problems. I just checked the Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Deep Penetrating Treatment directions on drugstore.com, and it says to leave it in for 5 minutes. Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Conditioner to Repair Damage says only 1 minute. As you can see from the many threads about it, protein can be a tricky thing, so this is one instance that you probably need to pay attention to the times.

And Moisture Maniac contains a lot of glycerin which sucks moisture from your hair in dry weather. I'd try moisturizing with a good conditioner that doesn't contain glycerin, maybe AOHR or GVP Conditioning Balm, for example - try leaving that on for an hour with a cap, not the protein treatment.

If you want to avoid mineral oil in your protein treatment, I just tried Nexxus Emergencee, and it seemed to work about the same as the GVP K-Pak, and it contains no mineral oil. Costs more, but less than real K-Pak.

Usually the only way I can get near that is with Caruso steam rollers (hair-safe - not hot), but that's too much trouble to do all the time . . . for me, at least. Hot rollers or curling iron, too, but they're damaging and no less trouble.

Some days I come close naturally, but it's completely serendipitous - I can't make it happen.

exactly. There's absolutely no way that's natural, product-free hair.

And I'll be honest, I can NOT go product free, unless I want that good ole nimbus cloud you mentioned, Frizzly. It doesn't matter what condition my hair is in, what conditioner/shampoo/DT i use... I simply cannot use a leave-in, and that's it. My hair expands, frizzes and ultimately tries to take over my head unless I have some kind of curl creme/gel/mousse to control it.

You can definitely limit your products. Maybe to just a leave in and a gel or mousse. But I have a feeling your hair might be like mine, and needs a little bit of help in the product department.

What's the climate like where you are? Dry? Humid?

well, it depends on what day it is and what time of day it is. The weather changes here in Toronto pretty much every 5 minutes. Today for example it's 48 degrees and pouring rain with a dewpoint of 45 degrees. Later this afternoon and evening we are expecting a temperature drop to about 5 degrees, with a windchill which makes it feel like minus 13 degrees F- a drop of 24 degrees in 12 hours or so. When we get flash freezes like that , the air is so dry the insides of our noses split and bleed....TMI sorry.

On the other hand, in summer, we have dewpoints that rate us as tropical humid at times, we live on a huge lake(Ontario) so there is always the heat and high humidity to contend with during the spring and summer. The only comfortable season here is Autumn, although there are plenty of times when it's more hot and humid than it should be for the time of year. Then we plunge into the cold and dryness of winter again, with the crazy fluctations that I mentioned at beginning of the post. So, the only consistency that our climate has is that it is terribly inconsistent. So, I'm sorry not to be able to really answer your question with any clarity. I sure that's why I've always had such trouble with my stupid hair.

Any other southern Ontario girls here care to comment how the weather is in their region?

lol, sounds like it is here in Texas. The weather can change at the drop of a hat. Yesterday it was 85 degrees and GORGEOUS, sunny, slightly humid... today the high's 50, overcast and somehow kind of dry (and WINDY).

Sucks to live in a place like that. If the weather's more predictable, you can take a more scientific approach to what will and won't work with your hair. But when the weather adds that many variables, it REALLY is just a trial and error thing, IMO.

mostly error with me, I have never yet had a great hair day except literally on June 10, 2006. It was super windy and the temp. was 50 degrees with no humidity. I had to blow dry my hair for a party so I stood on my balcony and brushed it dry using windpower. It actually came out looking pretty glossy and shiny and smooth, and that's the last day in memory that my hair actually did what I wanted it to.

The reason I'm so specific was because it was my parents 40th wedding anniversary and it was critical to have good hair that day. :)
