The Modified Pineapple

I'm having trouble sleeping (that happens when you stay up late over the weekend) so I thought I'd share my method of protecting curls overnight. I've tried everything from pineappling to the satin cap to a silk scarf and this is what's working best for me.

Some background info: if you've seen my fotki, you know that my hair is a little longer than BSL when dry. I also toss and turn when sleeping, and have found that a regular pineapple or a satin cap easily fall off during the night. My curl can also loosen up pretty easily. All three of the methods mentioned above have at various points flattened and pulled out curl. That's a big problem for someone who has class in the morning with no time to re-do hair.

Here's what I do for dry hair (for true second day hair):

Flip my head upside and carefully gather hair into a ponytail. I'm using what I think is a sweatband. It's not very thick though. I found it outside of my sister's room a few weeks ago and stole it.

Standing right-side-up, I gather the ponytail and place it on the front side of my head. I use a few mini jaw clips to hold them in place.

I do a second version of this for pseudo-second day hair on nights that I wash. I leave my hair crunchy and use two pineapples so that the curls around the part aren't stretched out. I can post pics tomorrow night after washing. These and a few others are all in my fotki.

I really like this because not only does it keep my curls looking great, it doesn't bother me when sleeping. It stays put and there's nothing to worry about falling off.

So you do a loose pineapple, then clip the hair around/forward of that? Am I getting that right?

Sadly, my last cut left my hair too short to pineapple and I'm getting gnarled knots at my nape and lower layer. :(

Wow thanks! I've always had trouble with pineapples because I toss and turn around all night. I must try this tonight :)

Yep, that's basically it. Have you tried just clipping it up without the ponytail? I'm sure that would work great for shorter hair!

I'll have to get some larger clips. I think I only have tiny or large (updo size). As long as my hair is up far enough so I don't sleep on the clips. Ouch! :) I might try this.

As long as it's pinned towards the front or directly on top, it's fine for me. I used to have to pin a silk scarf to get it to stay on overnight and it was not comfortable. I hope it works for you guys!

Alright, I just posted a new blog entry with pics and instructions for both of my versions. If anyone tries this, please leave feedback! I'm interested to know if anyone else has success with this.

curlyjenn I tried this but couldn't stand the feel of the clips all over my head. BUT you inspired me to try something. What I've been doing is clipping the top with just 2 clips, gathering a little bit from each side. Then, I put my hair in a pineapple and take out the clips. This keeps the top from getting Flat Head. I've been doing this for quite a while now and it's been working GREAT. So TY for the inspiration ;)

Yay! I'm glad you found something that worked! Which reminds me, I should post an updated version. I've found it hasn't worked as well with shorter hair, so I've been moving the clips around a bit.
