My Boss Makes Me Go ???

SpringcurlSpringcurl Posts: 8,002Registered Users
My boss was hired back in November and my department doesn't have much contact with him. I'd heard from a friend in another department, though, that his work style is to delegate everything and do nothing.

A few weeks ago he decided we were going to have biweekly meetings. Two weeks ago he said, "Anything anyone would like to talk about at the next meeting?"
I raised my hand, "I'd like to talk about quality control," I said.
"Great!" He said, "That's great. We'll talk about that at the next meeting."

Yesterday we had our meeting. We went through some of the stuff and then he said, "Now, quality control."
So I said, "Well, one of the things that I've noticed..."
He stopped me, "I don't want to get into actual specifics at this meeting. What I'd like to do is form some individual groups. Broadcast coordinators in one group, stenocaptioners in another group and then you can come up with specifics and when we meet back here in two weeks we'll talk about forming some kind of committee to discuss quality control."

So let me get this straight: Two weeks ago I mention what I think we should discuss. Two weeks go by where he could actually implement these groups of broadcast coordinators and stenocaptioners. Instead he does nothing, then says we'll form two groups to form a committee to discuss quality control.

Anyone else's boss make them go ???

OK, so I sprained my ankle Wed. night. A minor sprain — no crutches or anything, but I was icing and elevating it.

So there I am, at work Thursday mid-morning, icing, elevating. He comes over to tell me some stuff to do. Talks to me for about 5 minutes. Leaves. Does not mention anything about my ankle or anything.

    ????????

Just goes to show that the theory is true: Most people advance in their careers to the position that is just above their abilities. Your manager sucks.

My ex-boss was living with a woman he didn't like (he claims she wouldn't leave) and had an affair with one of his direct reports. During the time of the affair the direct report made a semi-veiled threat that if I didn't pass her stuff she would be upset and that when she gets upset she gets mean.

I was having a bad reaction when I first started the chemo treatments, I was constantly throwing up. I called my boss to get the day off and she told me to put my big girl panties on stfu and go to work.

My poor co worker's gallbladder is bad working at 13%, she's a sick puppy. Poor thing has had to work 7 days a week, 9 - 12 hour days.

Boss doesn't care. I am so glad to be out of there.

Shutup! Are you SERIOUS?! Goodness, I'm sorry to hear that.

To the OP, yes. I had a boss once who got a package with an Arabic sounding return address. He got scared that it was a bomb (this was long before anyone knew about Al Qaeda). So instead of calling the police, he gave the package to his vp to open.

Um...you seriously think someone's trying to blow you up (which is nutty to start), so you give the package to your vp so she can get blown up? Along with the rest of the office?

Wow. had that been me I might have found enough strength to get to work and kick her freaking azz.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

I used to know someone who would do that. They also would say "ah huh" about every 5 seconds while you were talking. You'd be talking about some problem, then finally say. "I'll just have to go down there and talk to so-and-so, I guess." Conversation continues, then a few minutes later she would interrupt and say. "ya know what you should just go down there and talk to so-and-so" as if it was her idea.

That is harsh! Maybe I'm spoiled from my last boss/DH's current, but I would not put up with that.
He was an orphan who grew up in extreme poverty. He could be the biggest jerk, but he took his employee's health very seriously, often to the point of annoyance. You could total out the most expensive car on the lot, but it would be nothing compared to the amount of trouble you'd get in for coming to work sick, not going to the doctor, and worse of all, not calling him after the doctor to tell him you're ok.

Speaking of bosses that make you go ???? Same boss as above. A camaro got repo'd and he wanted it back on the lot asap. He asked me to drive it home so I could take it to the tire shop first the in the morning before work. I drove a dangerously curvy highway with gorges on both sides to and from work. I get it up to 45 miles an hour and next thing I know the car jerks hard to the left making loud metal grinding noises. I pull off onto a back road and slowing take it back to work. It was jerking all over the place, so hard, I could could barely keep my hands on the steering wheel.

He sees me pull up and asks what's wrong. "Um this car is broken! A lot!" He replies with his infamous line of doom "but they drove it in!" I explained what it was doing. Boss: "But. . but. . . It still needs new tires!"

He died a few years ago in a car accident. I miss the old man.

    wow, these are horror stories!
I really like my current boss ... or project manager or whatever ... he's funny and smart and competent and realistic and easy to respect and really good at reading people. I lucked out.

My last job I was not so lucky ... my boss had a tendency to micromanage, but he was terrible at our job (software development) so he would force us to go down paths that just didn't make sense. I also got the impression that he was xenophobic or maybe racist (he was really, really nice to the software developers who came from his own country, but untrusting and rude to the others ... it was weird). It was a relief to exit that job.

I am at an odd point in my career where I really like my boss, enjoy my job, and get along well with the people who work for me and with my peers.

This has never happened before so I'm waiting for something to go horribly wrong.
