Cara Crofton or Melanie Eckert in Houston?

I came across both of these names online as curly specialists. Cara Crofton owns Gloss the Salon, and Melanie Eckert works at Salon E, both in Houston. Any Houston curlies here ever try either of them?

    Hi Kitara!

I haven't been to either one of them, but I came in here looking for something in the Houston area. My natural hair salon is always booked 6 months in advance and I just want someone I can go to that will do my hair every once in awhile. I don't want to have to wait 6 months to see if I will be able to get in.

    Good Luck!

    Hi Sugartwist,

Thanks for replying and good luck to you too! Wow, six months in advance? They must be incredible! What salon is it?

I went to Cara for almost 3 years when she owned Gloss, she's awesome! I tried so many stylists in Houston (even 1 or 2 recommended by the site), but Cara was the best. Unfortunately, she sold her part of ownership to her business partner a couple of years ago, and I don't remember what salon she went to. If you call Gloss someone there can tell you where she went. Cion Ortega (I think that's his last name) used to work there like 4 or 5 years ago, and he did my hair when I first started going to Gloss (after he left I started seeing Cara, as I noticed how great her work was). He's also awesome, and I believe he works at Azure now. I'm super picky about my hair, and if a regular stylist messes up my hair even once, I don't go back. Cara and Cion never messed up my hair. I currently go to Sami at A Touch of Red, but last time I went, I hated my cut, so I'm on the look for someone new (maybe Cion or Cara if I can find her). You won't regret going to either one!

    Madma123,

Thanks so much for replying! That's good info to have. What is your curl type? I'm a 4a. Do you recall ever seeing Cara or Cion work on 4's? If you get the name of the salon Cara is in now you should post a review in the CurlSalons section. I'm sure other Houston curlies would love to know about her. I'll definitely try and hunt both of them down. Thanks!

You may also want to check out Gerri Curtis at Blue Mambo; she is their curly hair expert, was trained in NYC by L. Massey--Gerri's been taking care of my curls and color since this past summer and I love her! She uses the Deva products, cuts curls dry, really talks with you about what you want--she's terrific!

    Sharon5152,

Thanks. I've actually contacted Gerri by e-mail to ask her some questions and I think I'll pay her visit soon. Glad you've found success with her!

Did you ever visit with Geri? I have an appointment on Dec.5 and I'm wondering what your experience was. Thanks!
