So, I had a roommate who was a bit crunchy, she had beautiful long dreads, and worked at a health food store. She came out of the house one day with shiny, clean dreads, and I asked what she had done. She had rubbed them with pure coconut oil, that she had gotten from the health food place.

NOW, I dont have dreads, I have 3B hair, that is easily weighted down with too much product, and I also cannot touch it too much.
I use about a 1/4 teaspoon of this product, rub it between my hands, and smooth it lightly over my DRY (wet application impedes the drying of your hair) hair as a shine and frizz treatment. I use more by the ends, and less at the root, where it tends to be a little oilier.

It smells sweet and delicious, and I love it.

It comes in a large glass jar or plastic tub its about $8, and I put a portion of mine in a small capers jar for a more portable size. If you have used the aveda humectant pomade, this is comparable in what it does to your hair.

    Hope that helped!!!

Evab - I just got some coconut oil, and as it's in the solid form I was wondering do you simply scrape a bit out and soften it in your hands first?
    Thanks lovely

    Hey there!!
Yes, I lived in key west when I bought it, so it was always melted into liquid form, but now I live in New Hampshire, and its solid!!! So, just take a bit out, like a pomade, and rub it in your hands, it should look kind of like vaseline in your hands, then smooth it over your hair. I would do a little at a time, layer it, so you dont use too much.

let me know how it works for you!!!!

It's not organic, but the super Walmart has 100% pure coconut oil for under $3 for a 31.5 oz tub.

Blimey, that's a bargain, it's much more expensive than that here in the UK. Sadly I love it though, I've become addicted to the stuff, does wonders for your skin too.

It was in the baking aisle. I only saw it at the Super Walmart, not the regular.

Thanks! I'll have to look again. It wasn't there last time I looked. Maybe I'll try the Super Wal*Mart that's just down the road from the other Super Wal*Mart. HAHAHA They're on like every corner now, aren't they??

I wish! I used to live in North Carolina and they were everywhere, and there were Super K Mart and Targets. We have only 1 Super Walmart for atleast a 50 mile radius, and no other Super anythings :(

Oh wow. You can hardly go 20 miles around here without running into one. Maybe it's because I'm so close to Houston, though. I don't travel much because Texas has everything I need, so I guess I just thought that everywhere was like here. DUH.

I also suggest using Monoi Tiare Tahiti coconut oil. Obviously, the Tiare is infused with gardenia, but Monoi has several infused oils - they make my hair smell unbelieveable.

I use coconut milk as a leave in 2 times a week. If using it as a deep treatment once a week, you'd be fine. Its much lighter than coconut oil, but super moisturizing. My photos in fotki are hair with coconut milk, if that helps at all. I did find that using it more than 2-3 week (as a leave in) weighed my hair down.
    ~3b/a - fine~

Aren't we spoiled here? We have two different Super Wal-marts we go to regularly.

So is the coconut oil always in a solid form like that?

Oh my goodness! Are you from around here too? Over in the Curl Gatherings board there is a post for TX curlies. I'm trying to find enough of us to warrant a meeting.

Does coconut oil leave your hair feeling oily or greesy?

No...it doesn't leave mine greasy or oily, but I don't use a whole lot. I use a small scoop under my conditioner from time to time.

Could I use this on second and third day dry hair? I have very fine hair and oils in conditioners or leave ins make my hair go droopy and lifeless. Yes, I'll have real conditioned and shiney hair but NO curl.
But I get the frizzy's on 2nd and 3rd day.

I usually use coconut oil as a deep treatment sometimes. Coconut oil is something that they used in the Philippines as a hair treatment as well. My parents taught me how to make coconut oil out of coconut milk.
