All things protein! I want toknow it all!

AdriaCroftAdriaCroft Posts: 264Registered Users Curl Neophyte
Ok, so I would like to know all things protein, ive been looking thoughsome of the thread but I can't get the info I need.

Could anyone tell me these things please?

How do you know if you need protein in your hair?

How do you know if you are protein sensitive?

How often should you do a protein treatment?

What ingredients should be in a good protein treatment?

Any recommendations on a protein treatment?

Thanks
Curl Type 3A and with a mind of its own.

Shampoo once a week with Organic Aloe Vera Herbal Shampoo.

Currently on the look out for a new DT and Styling Cream, though Curl Junkie is looking quite good.

A good way to tell if you need protein is to do a strand test.

You take a strand of hair, wet, hold it at each end and stretch. If it snaps immediately or stretches very little, you need moisture. If it stretches 20%-30%, you probably have a good moisture/protein balance. If it stretches much more than about 30% and doesn't shorten up again (strand stays all limp and strectched out) you may need protein. I usually do a few hairs just to get an average.

Another way is that if you see your curls getting limp and dragged out (and you can't blame it on a low dewpoint) you may need a shot of protein.

If you are protein sensitve, your hair will feel like dead grass or straw when you use protein. In extremes, the hair can snap. It will feel dry and brittle, and adding more of a protein conditioner will just make it worse. Now, this won't mean that you are sensitive to all proteins. Wheat is a commonly seen as an offender, but some can use it. So, you may be unable to use wheat protein, but be OK with silk or soy or keratin.

The frequency of a protein treatment all depends on your hair. I had been using one once a week, but it's down to bi-weekly now. It all depends. That is something you'll have to learn on your own. The strand test can be helpful in figuring this out.

As far as ingredients to look for, I'd look for ingredients that you already like in your regular conditioner, but with protein higher up. Or, you can look for products marked as "reconstructors" (at least they are sold that way in the US) to find a high protein conditioner. If you are strict cg, do check other ingredients to see if it works for you.

As for something specific, I'll let the UK curlies chime in on that one.

Wow-thank you so very much redcelticcurls! I was thinking my hair needed protein, but I wasn't quite sure. I did the strand test and that confirmed it.

I've been seeing my hair go from wavy 2C-curly3A to just wavy in the past two weeks and it's just kind of blah. I ordered a protein treatment through Amazon, but until it gets here, is there something I can make homemade (a protein treatment?)

I've tried an ACV rinse and a Baking Soda rinse, but neither helped. Do you have any suggestions? I miss my curls!!

Hope nobody minds, but I'm bumping this to piggyback a question to it.

If you don't want to do a full-blown protein treatment, but just want to use a conditioner with protein in it, how high up on the ingredient list should that protein be? I find the protein is often way down, past the fragrance. Is that enough to even see any results at all?

I've seen recommendations here for Nexxus Emergen-C (sp?), Aubrey Organics GVP, and Kenra. Do they have more protein than, say, Trader Joe's Refresh/Giovanni 50-50, which have soy protein about halfway down the list (after the oils but before the Vitamins, preservatives and fragrance?)

Thanks in advance for any insights......

Aubrey Island Naturals seems to have enough protein in it to bother the sensitve, so it may be enough for those who want protein, but not a treatment.

Aubrey GVP is high protein, but I don't know if I'd call it an actual treatment or not. I look at it as sort of an in between point - more than most conditioners, but maybe not a full blown treatment.

I had great clumps with this and loved it except for the quick protein buildup.

I have a question, might be stupid.

Is consuming protein through your diet the same thing as applying protein directly to hair?

I haven't noticed a big correlation. But, for those who are malnourished, it could be. I think protein defeiciency would be uncommon in the US though.

I have read that thin, fine hair responds best to protein treatments. When I do a protein treatment I immediately notice more bounce, moisture, curl, shine. For me I could do a protein treatment every 4 days but this is not practical. I really like Ouidad protein best ; I see the most dramatic results from this.

What kind of protein treatments do you do? If you go for the whole homemade egg thing and sit with it on your head for a time, I can see where it wouldn't be practical to do it once a week. But if you go the lazy way, like I do, you can just use something like Nexxus Emergencee and be done in three minutes.

I get better results with this than with homemade treatments anyway.

My hair really likes protein. I use the Island Naturals and GVP each--about once a week. I do the Nexxus Emergencee about every two or three weeks. I didn't find that the homemade protein DTs did anything at all.

Based on trial and error with a few products, I think my hair likes keratin protein but not necessarily other proteins. For example it doesn't respond wonderfully to the the AO GVP with milk protein in it, but it LOVES the keratin in Eqyss Megatek Rebuilder. Does any know of other conditioners that have keratin protein in them and are CG-friendly?

Not sure if this belongs here or not.
Is henna a natural protein? If protein sensitive would the henna (from Lush and red in color) cause hair to get dry and brittle? Or do I just need more conditioning when using a henna? Or is it the brand?
I believe I have fine, low porosity with medium porosity at the ends.

I've added AO GPB as my conditioner when I do my hair which is approximately every other day. It keeps my curls bouncy and springy.

I'm getting ready to have my hair colored next Wed. I plan on picking up Nexxus Emergen-c after work today to use. I've read in the past that a protein treatment needs to be followed by a deep moisture treatment. Does that mean the same evening or the next day? Inquiring minds want to know....

I alternate between a homemade mixture and the Nexxus Emergencee. So far I haven't had overload but I can definitely feel the difference in softness, it's drier with protein. If my hair is soft, my curls are droopy. I could probably do it 2 or 3 times a week, but I don't want to use poo/soap bar that frequently, and not washing with something after the emergencee makes me nervous just because I don't know what will happen if I can't get it all out.
I need to get some of that AOGPB, I've never tried it but I'd probably do well with it. I have no idea if my hair prefers certain types of protein.
No cones since 08/25/09. Occasional low poo.

Texaskurl, you need to follow the "heavy" protein treatments like Emergencee with the moisture DT right away. Otherwise, your hair feels hard.

bergasauras, I don't use a soap bar/shampoo after protein treatment unless it's "that" day to do one. I've never had a problem and have been doing this for well over a year.

I got highlights.haircut on Wed. Yesterday, I didn't really have time, so sprayed some of the Nexus Aloxxi Botanical in my hair while I was getting ready to shower, rinsed it out and did the AO GPB as my rinse out. Used John Master's LI, DM Curling Gelly and no gel. My hair looked incredible. Tight curls and no frizz--it looked great all day. I could have had second day hair. Today, I used the Elucence protein treatment. It's moisturizing--I had it in while I did my morning ritual, did 10 minutes with heat, rinsed it out. Did the DermOrganics Mask as my rinse out, shescentit CocoCreme LI, [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Smoothing-Gellie-p-937.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Smoothing-Gellie]CJ Smoothing Gellie[/buylink] and gel. Ran errands and was out in the wind--my hair still looks great!

My hair loves protein. I will continue to do "lighter" protein until it rebels, if ever.

Thanks, kathymack! Tried to find the Nexxus Emergencee after work today and couldn't find it anywhere. Had to use the Aphogee protein treatment I already had in the cupboard. While I was standing there drying it, I noticed it has dimethicone. Experienced Curlies, is this something I should worry about or try to clarify before coloring Wed.? Anyway, I followed it with a good 1/2 hour of Komaza Olive Moisture Mask under a shower cap. Rinsed, and followed that with CJ Curl Assurance Leave-in and BRHG. Am air-drying, as I type......

I haven't cowashed since Aug, 08 and rarely use shampoo. I use a natural/organic soap bar to cleanse every three days. I rinse and use the professional Emergency. Only end with a soap bar cleanse if it's the day I would usually do it.

I think my hair has a low porosity, though I'm not sure yet. If that's the case, that would mean my hair PROBABLY doesn't like protein, right? My hair's very wet right now so I don't want to touch it, but I'll try that strand test later.
I'm wondering because I had my friend's mom who is a certified beautician dye my hair almost black this August (I've never bleached) and it felt kind of rough for a few weeks.
But I remember hearing somewhere that if you go DARKER you're actually coating your hair with protein and it should feel softer, but mine just kind of felt like straw for a few weeks. But I wasn't sure if that was the protein or ammonia.. I haven't dyed it since August but am thinking of redying it this December... but maybe getting semipermanent black instead.

    Thank you, kathymack!

My hair felt really soft and kinda fuzzy after the treatment. The BRHG didn't seem to do its job, either. I think the problem was the magnesium sulfate in the Aphogee. I'm not going to use it again. I'll see if I can get to Ulta and find the Nexxus Emergencee or one of the other protein treatments mentioned in this thread.

This evening, I washed with the Suave Coconut condish and followed my usual routine. Hope it's better tomorrow!

Hipwizard, I washed with JC conditioning cleanser, then blotted the hair, saturated it with the Aphogee, and used my hand held dryer to dry it. Not really sure how long it took. Then rinsed and applied the deep conditioning treat ment which I left on for about half an hour.

My hair is low porosity and has never met a protein it doesn't like. It's more the texture that is an automatic with whether or not your hair likes protein. Fine hair usually loves protein, medium is a little more picky as to what protein and coarse hair is only on occasion and is VERY picky about what protein you use.

This is off the top of my head, it's been a while since I've used these products. The instructions on the Emergencee says a few minutes in the shower. I think I've put it on damp hair and left it in 10+ minutes. The Nexxus Aloxxi Emergency says 10-20 minutes, I think.
