Women are so difficult.

We never say what we mean! Why do we do this?

Here's what one of my guy-friends sent to me, a chain mail, but I thought it was hilarious:

NINE WORDS WOMEN USE

(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

(2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

(3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

(4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)

(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' . that will bring on a 'whatever').

(8 Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying @#$%&;*%#!!

(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.

    Oy.

Though there are times... when we mean exactly what we say. In regards to #3) Nothing...

One of my friends was on the phone with her SO while on break at work. He kept asking her what was wrong, said she sounded tired/sad/something and she kept saying nothing because there wasn't ANYthing wrong. She was simply at work, and talking on the phone during her break. He wouldn't. let. it. be. and just kept hammering her about it until 15 minutes later when there actually WAS something wrong. HIM!

lol, it was the funniest argument in the world to overhear, and she hung up on him all exasperated and pissed off when she'd started the conversation without a problem at all.

Speak for yourself. I loathe those emails. "Look, all women are fussy and love shoes!!! Men subsist entirely on fishing, football, boobies and beer!!!"

Honestly, they're rarely funny and always exploit stereotypes. Boring.
"And politically correct is the worst term, not just because it’s dismissive, but because it narrows down the whole social justice spectrum to this idea that it’s about being polite instead of about dismantling the oppressive social structure of power.
Fun Fact: When you actively avoid being “PC,” you’re not being forward-thinking or unique. You’re buying into systems of oppression that have existed since before you were even born, and you’re keeping those systems in place."

    Agreed.

And ask my husband if he thinks I speak my mind. Ask my boss. Ask the people who work for me. Ask my friends. They will tell you that I speak my mind, but do so with compassion and caring, and never in a hurtful way.

Hear, hear! I say what I mean, and I mean what I say. I detest those anti-woman crap emails. All it needed was a line about PMS and women losing their minds once a month to be the total stereotype.

Yeppers. I've known men who have said the things in the list. And women who do no such thing.

Fortunately stupid racist jokes have fallen out of favor, at least in polite society. I hope that soon stupid sexist jokes will go the same way.

I have to agree with Geeky, stupid and sexist, not humorous. Not really a big deal just not funny.

I don't do that and I don't have any friends that do that. We all are straight forward with our spouses and we all have pretty darned great relationships.

Ugh. I hate chain mail. What happened to creativity? It's not difficult to list every stereotype about a group of people. It's just rude.

Well, as with most of these things, there may be a kernel of truth to it (which is why people laugh), but reinforcing it too much by stating it as truth does unfortunately perpetuate the stereotype.

IF there is a trend of women not saying what they mean (and there may be, though I think it's changing), I think a more fruitful discussion might be: to what extent are women socialized to NOT be upfront about what they think and feel? Are young girls unfairly pressured to "make nice" all the time, while boys are pressured to stand up for themselves? And if we are socialized to be this way..... shouldn't we question it and draw attention to it?

    But, you know.... whatever. (wink)

Wow, I think some of you are a tad oversensitive. It's a joke, and nobody is saying men don't do any of those. I think it's funny. :dontknow: And I speak my mind plenty, just ask my husband.

Thank you Kaia. Linking this to racism and sexism...honestly, it made my jaw drop. Lighten up! It's a CHAIN LETTER not a friggin' academic essay written by some doctor about female inferiority!

Reading the responses did give me a good laugh though, haha! Still laughing...

I must admit, I am guilty of #9 and #6 personally. I'm quite outspoken about my opinions. Most of these phrases apply to my BOYFRIEND and not to me, hahahahaha! He likes to say "Fine." and "Nothing." a lot when he's pissed off, lol.

This is tired essentialist bullsh*t that appears to be true because of confirmation bias. I strongly suggest that everyone take a few minutes to read this article by Deborah Cameron, one of my favorite academics. You'll either find it very informative, or feel thankful that someone agrees with you.

I don't find it funny, just sexist. Even if it's just a joke, it's still sexist. I don't find redneck jokes funny, or racist jokes (just an example, don't think I"m comparing - apples and oranges people). It's really stupid that both women and men have to put up with these dumb sterotypes.

I'm not sensitive about it, I just find it unfunny and a lazy attempt at funny. Crap like this is what encourages people to think it's ok to actually behave in a sexist manner, and I definitely don't find THAT funny.

My mother does/says all the things on the list, not because she's a woman, but because she's passive-aggressive and doesn't know how to own or to express her true feelings.
I think a more fruitful discussion might be: to what extent are women socialized to NOT be upfront about what they think and feel? Are young girls unfairly pressured to "make nice" all the time, while boys are pressured to stand up for themselves? And if we are socialized to be this way..... shouldn't we question it and draw attention to it?

My mother was raised the way wavycurly40 describes, to be sweet and nice and never to express "bad" feelings like anger or sadness. She raised me the same way and it's taken me years to unlearn that crap.

Oh, and the title of this thread ticks me off. Saying that 50% of the world's population is difficult, especially when the person saying/spreading that "information" is a member of said group? Yeah, sexism is alive and well.

(To the OP, I'm not calling you out for posting this, just agreeing with many others in this thread that there are deeper issues at work here.)

And I guess men are perfect and always say what they mean, right?

I have a sense of humor and I can sometimes laugh at things like this, but more times than not, it annoys me to no end.
I stopped listening to a morning show on the radio because almost everyday the topic had something to do with how women are better than men or how men are better than women. I thought "is this middle school?" As adults, do we really want to keep this as our focus...aren't we pretty set in our identity at this point that we don't need to say "ha! I'm better than you!"?
It just seems so juvenile when people complain. And I know, I've been guilty of complaining about men, so I need to listen to myself here. But even when I complain...it's usually about "most" men or "some" men. I try not to generalize too much...LOL

Women, who are still responsible for most of the housework, for most of the child care, who still get paid less money for equal work? We're difficult? Really!?!

    Yes, that's my feminist response.

But the reality of the situation is that there are some difficult men, there are some difficult women, and that's just reality.
That's right, I said it! I wear scrunchies!!

I am a sulfate washing, cone slabbing, curly lovin' s.o.b. The CG police haven't caught me yet.
