Boortz: Rep. McKinney "looks like a ghetto slut"

On the March 31 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio program, Neal Boortz said that Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) "looks like a ghetto slut." Boortz was commenting on a March 29 incident in which McKinney allegedly struck a police officer at a Capitol Hill security checkpoint. Boortz said that McKinney's "new hair-do" makes her look "like a ghetto slut," like "an explosion at a Brillo pad factory," like "Tina Turner peeing on an electric fence," and like "a shih tzu." McKinney is the first African-American woman elected to Congress from Georgia.

From the March 31 broadcast of Cox Radio Syndication's The Neal Boortz Show, with producer Belinda Skelton and talk radio host Royal Marshall:

BOORTZ: For instance, or for goodness sakes, jump in and I'm gonna say -- I'm gonna start out with something controversial. I saw Cynthia McKinney's new hair-do. Have you seen it, Belinda?

SKELTON: No.

BOORTZ: She looks like a ghetto slut.

SKELTON: Well, how is it?

BOORTZ: It's just -- it's hideous.

SKELTON: Is it braided? Or --

BOORTZ: No, it's not braided. It just flies away from her head in every conceivable direction. It looks like an explosion in a Brillo pad factory. It's just hideous. To me, that hairstyle just shows contempt for -- no, it's not an Afro. I mean, no, it just shows contempt for the position that she holds and the body that she serves in. And, I'm sorry, there's just no other way to -- it's just a hideous and horrible looking --

MARSHALL: Her hairstyle?

BOORTZ: Yeah, the hairstyle. It just, it looks like an explosion. Have you seen it?

MARSHALL: Yeah, I like it.

BOORTZ: Oh, jeez.

MARSHALL: It looks better than the braids she was wearing.

BOORTZ: No, the braids had some dignity. They had some class.

MARSHALL: The braids had dignity?

BOORTZ: They had more class than this thing.

MARSHALL: This says, you know, kinda 2000s, you know, stepping up to the plate. Contemporary look, you know?

BOORTZ: She looks like Tina Turner peeing on an electric fence.

MARSHALL: OK, so you don't like her hair.

BOORTZ: Yeah, OK, I don't like her hair. I'm sorry.

MARSHALL: That being said, I think a lot of people would say it looks a lot better than those cornrows she was wearing. You can't tell me that's dignified.

BOORTZ: Well, I'm not a big cornrow fan but I got used to her with that. OK?

MARSHALL: So she's staying the same for you?

BOORTZ: She looks like a shih tzu!

MARSHALL: I like Cynthia's new hairstyle.

BOORTZ: Well, there you go. Differing opinions.

Boortz posted similar comments on the "Neal's Nuze" section of his website, in which he said McKinney "looks like ghetto trash." From Boortz's website:

It doesn't look like the latest Cynthia McKinney mess is going to go away any time soon. Today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that the Capitol Hill police have notified the federal prosecutor's office in Washington that they are going to seek an arrest warrant for McKinney next week. OK, Now I've seen Cynthia McKinney's new hairstyle. There is just no other way to say this. It's just hideous. She looks like ghetto trash. Get a braider over there ... quick! Nobody with a modicum of self-respect would go around looking like that. And don't give me any stuff for saying this. I've endured years of "bald" remarks. I'm entitled.

How rude! Her hair CERTAINLY doesn't look like a ghetto slut. Whatever the hell that is. I guess he's an authority, huh?

Her hair looks beautiful. I like her new hairstyle. See, with comments like this, it's no wonder that women are willing to fry their hair off. What an a--hole.

    Her hair is BEAUTIFUL.

I'm so insulted by this, I don't know what to do. First and foremost, I'm insulted as a black female because I am so tired of this stigma that black women are poor and promiscuous. This woman is a freaking U.S. Congresswoman! What the hell was he thinking? NO respect whatsodamnever. It baffles me that no matter how much success black people can attain, we can ALWAYS get cut down to size by some arrogant white person. That blows my mind.

Secondly, I take offense because I am a black woman who chooses to wear her hair naturally and I am so sick of him implying that because her hair isn't burned straight like he's used to, that she's wild. If he wants to talk about her hitting police officers, which IS wrong, then fine. He can do that. But her personal appearance has nothing to do with that and he was WAY out of line.

This is just so shocking and offensive. And - surprise surprise - her new hairstyle isn't remotely "hideous" or "horrible looking." Geez.

Yep. This is one of the reasons why black women feel that their natural hair is a horrible flaw or embarressing physical deformaty that needs to be fixed or covered up.

    I'm so disgusted right now.

The fact that he called her a "ghetto slut" speaks volumes. Black women being called "sluts" has such a slavery connotation to me. We're these wild, voodoo creatures that aren't good for anything but a night of hot jungle sex and breeding more slaves to plow the field. So for those that haven't pulled their heads out of their asses since the Civil War, our rightful position in society is simply as "the slut".

His issues aren't really with her hair. He's pissed that a black woman is in a respectable position of power. I'm sure he feels that she stole it from a more qualified white person through that damn affirmative action.

I agree with what you wrote and especially this.

What a jerk! The more I think about this the more I get pissed.

I like her hair. It is very becoming and not wild at all.

I have a lot of respect for Ms McKinney. She has taken many unpopular positions and has been very articulate in advocating for the people of her state and this country. It is interesting that they usually don't spend much time discussing hairdos of MEN in power!!!

WHAT?!!!! What an a**hole!!! I saw Ms. McKinney last week on some show, and I think she's beautiful. Not that this should matter, since she's a Congresswoman and not a supermodel. How dare this...man resort to physical appearance as a reason to put down a strong, intelligent woman of any color? I think I am in the majority of outraged curly girls when I say Neal Boortz is scum!

As soon as I saw the report on MSNBC, it occurred to me that the braids were there because she was transitioning, and she did the Big Chop over the holiday break.

I think it takes guts to make that change when working in such a conservative environment. (though, now that I think of it, some of the ghastly comb-overs those old guys on The Hill are sporting are much more disturbing than a few happy curls, but, I digress...)

I think the cut and the highlights are beautiful, and make her look 10 years younger. I wonder what her hair care routine is! And if shes ever seen this site!

Thanks for publishing the name of that Jack*ss that made those comments. One of the MSNBC hosts mentioned that some conservative radio hosts had made some horrible racist comments about her hair, but he didn't give a name. I'm keeping my eye on that guy. Putz.

You know I'm glad that she is wearing her natural hair. Because she might be the woman to break the ice for other females that are scared to sport their natural hair because of comments like these. We need to not be ashamed of our hair. There is nothing wrong with black hair. Or curly hair in general. When I clicked on the link. I looked at that guy and he looks like total crap. Can anyone say Grandpa.

She may get some steam for her hairdo. But I think many women will be encouraged. To let down there hair. Like the 70's it's more than hair its a statement of being okay with who we are!!

That is just awful...and some other words I can't say here! Even if he specifically didn't like her hair style there is no need for that. If you are born with hair like that then what...are you supposed to process it to death and straighten it to try and conform to what society's idea of beautiful is. This person should be slapped!! :x It would even be one thing if she made her hair a certain way that was not becoming to a professional, like...let's say...a green mohawk. But her hair is curly, she's black, what is she supposed to do? That is just rediculous. Her hair is pretty...and he's an A$$!!

Okay, I am in no way defending this guy!!! Please read the whole post before responding!

In the first picture of her that's posted (where she's in the tan top) her hair looks like it's the wrong shape, but that may be the angle and the way the pic is cropped. I think her hair looks kind of . . . off in that picture, but nowhere near ugly.

In the picture of her in the orange top (which I think is beautiful), her hair is unbelieveably beautiful! It's just amazing!

Yes, I am a white girl, and yes, I love the look of natural curls no matter what their texture! (But usually the tighter the better in my opinion!) :)

I like the fact that he wasn't getting any agreements on his side. It was sort of like HER HAIR IS HIDEOUS....

So I'm glad there wasn't a whole group of people laughing and exchanging insults, it was just him sounding stupid.

It's so disgusting how many people, especially some racist men, think naturally curly hair is automatically frizzy and trashy looking. I am actually proud and glad to have naturally curly hair, because it's different and it's a part of what makes me, me. Curls are like hair jewelry in my opinion. I love em! ITA, he is not talking about hair, his comments reveal a great deal more than he feelings about her hair.

What filth, a well educated, black women, with a distinguished career is all off a suddent a ghetto hood rat because she didn't straighten her hair.
Hmmm, something does not add up.

But in a similar note, I noticed that our Govenor General in Canada wore her natural for years until she received the current post. I wonder if fear of commentary like this informed her decision. Not that I blame her, but it seems like an interesting parallel to me.
