Clumping Preservation?

DEL2CDEL2C Posts: 6,418Registered Users
The other night I used Loreal Nutrivive for Curly/Wavy hair. When I took down my initial plop, I was amazed by the clumps! Unfortunately when I started scrunching my product in I noticed a signicant loss of clumping. Does this happen to anyone else???? Once it dried it just looked my normal hair once again:sad11:What do you guys do to preserve your clumps?????????

Do you really want to know, because it's a long process ;)

TO preserve clump, I take out my plop and cruise around doing morning chores to let curls air dry, probably about 30 to 40 minutes. Then I'll blow dry for about 5-10 minutes - if that.

Next, I'll lay down with CNN or a good book for about 10-15 minutes, pulling my hair up behind me in a loose clump bun at the top of my head - always against a silk or satin pillowcase. When I get up, I've got plump springy, clumpy curls...do I do this every day, not hardly, but on those days I do, whoopee! HTH

Have you tried doing the skip curl technique, but with big strands? Someone mentioned it and I have been meaning to try it. HTH
    CurlyFireHorse
Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 2: KCKT, KCCC, plop, KCCC, plop again, air dry
Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny

If I smooth the product down the hair and sort of squash my hair together rather than scrunching I get more clumping. I also found the L'Oreal condish as a leave-in gave good clumps. That was when i realised I didn't like too much clumping in my hair, lol.

hey Del, I have noticed a similar prob.

I have slightly changed the way I scrunch. I used to scrunch scrunch scrunch. It separated my precious clumps. Now I scrunch slowly and firmly and hold the handful of hair a good ten seconds then let go and move on to the next. For me it makes a diff.

Curly in Colorado, at what point are you putting in your product after the 1st plop?

Feral-Skip curl just pulls out my waves that's a no go. I do like the idea of the Loreal as a leave in though ;)

I wonder if spray gel would work better to FREEZE those clumps initially??? Usually I have to scrunch to get the ball rolling so to speak, I was pretty surprised to see nicely formed clumps that doesn't usually happen to me!

Thanks for the suggestions girls!!! I will try smoothing product and holding firmly instead of scrunching like crazy. Keep the suggestions coming though this is very helpful to a lot of curlies!!

Yes yes yes yes yes. :) It seems like that still distributes product well and encourages curl, but I tend to get better clumps that way. I do have to pull apart a couple over-clumped spots, but I MUCH prefer that problem. :)

:) Same here. I've found that if I wait till its dry the overly clumped clumps keep migrating back together. So I air dry a bit then tenderly pull those apart.

I tried a version of this. After air drying and diffusing for a bit I laid down to watch a show with my hair up over the pillow and for some ODD reason this really worked???? I think a lot of it had to do with my new DMHJ too :) But I did notice a difference when I used the DMHJ and didn't do the CC maneuver...:laughing6:

I'll have to try this method again with a different rotation..Thanks CC!! I mean Kate ;)

I missed the first question (sorry) my product goes in whilst I'm still in the shower - hair is wet, wet, wet.

And...... I am so jealous that you've got DM's HJ, that stuff is sold out everywhere! I think perhaps you should send me a wee sample so I can determine if I need to purchase it January 5th (I've actually marked my Google calendar so I can place an order ON THAT DAY).

I scrunch in my products when my hair is soaking wet - gets some good formation going. Then, I plop. I tried that whole 'no plop' thing, and it was nice at first, and then it became frizz. I de-plop, hairspray, then put it up in a wet pineapple and sleep. The next day, there's a very light crunch and clumps abound.

Yeah, I don't think I'm supposed to use hairspray...but it smells good! And it makes sure my hair doesn't squish overnight. I use herbal essences set me up hairspray, max hold. It has a cone (peg-8 dimethicone) and a 'xane...but I could never commit to full CG. I like cones.

I couldn't find the skip method. I've used a "jumprope" method where you just take the small sections and twirl them up while wet and set them down, then without disturbing, diffuse. There has to be some air dry time for better results. On my hair it is like long spirals.

I'm going to a guy now and he doesn't cut my hair the same way at all. It is getting so much longer. I'm losing volume on the top from the weight, but the curls are pretty. They all say they are curl experts and they do opposite things. I can't decide if I should stay with this guy or not. The thing keeping me with him for another month is that I'm telling him to trim more.
The first cut with him was brutal...before CG. He had to get the crispies off. That's when I first did the co-wash. It terrified me to not wash with shampoo. Even for one week I was freaked out by it. Now I would never go back. Change is hard for me.
