I attempted to make shealoe and now my hair feels gross..did i make it wrong??

First, I got light mountain henna in neutral, put that in for an hr and 10 min rinsed it out, didnt notice to much of a difference at all in my hair, but just in case I did a DT right afterwards for about 35 min rinsed that out...then I began to experiment..I purchased some aloe vera gel today 99%, and bought some castor oil from health food store ( its called the palma cristi castor oil by heritage products) mixed both of those two thing with shea butter in a bowel with a mixer...put it in my hair and now my hair is VERY greasy, and sticky, and theres tons of lil white grit from the shea butter i think. I was attempting to make shealoe but I think I may of done it wrong??? What is the receipe for shealoe?? Does it normally make your hair feel greasy and sticky? Should I of only used the castor oil sparingly on my ends? Idk if I should wash it all out and try somethin else...

I fixed it. All it needed was to be rinsed. Its actually perfectly moisturized now.

    hi:toothy4:

what amounts did u use. it just sounds like the ratio might need to be adjusted heres what i typically use

8 oz tub of shea butter
    1/4 c coconut oil
    1/4 c of combined oils- olive, vit e, almond,castor
    1/4 c aloe very gel

recipes vary imo castor is too heavy alone inthis recipe. coconut oil is the bomb. add shea and coco, then stream in the other cup of oil until creamy bc u might not need it all. the add the avg last bc it takes a while to blend. u might not need all of it either.

hth i just made some today w/o the avg. heavenly. used on skin and body and the baby:toothy4: HTH

If your curls are a silky texture like my son's, the shea is a bit heavy and adding the castor oil just makes it even more greasy. You may need to cut down the amount of shea (or up the aloe), and use a different oil. I use Mega Care Vitamin E which is a blend of Sweet Almond, Lemon, Wheat Germ, Grape Seed, Jojoba, Vitamin E oils and Rosemary. It's not very heavy and smells great. (I hate the way shea smells, so it helps a little.)

Also, you need to blend it a LOT to get the grit out. Try whipping the shea alone (soften it in the microwave, if you must), then add the oil and whip some more, then add the aloe a little at a time. You'll get a creamy consistancy with just a tiny bit of grit, if any at all.

The thing is, shea is oily and obviously by adding additional oils you're going to get a mixture that's oily. You just have to experiment to get the right mix for your hair. I like to make mine so that if I put some on my hands, I don't have the urge (or need) to wipe them on a towel, lol.

I def think I did that, I had a 4 oz bottle of castor oil and half of it is gone now because i put it all in that mix. I think I may have put more castor than shea actually. I dont really wanna toss it all out so I think Im just gonna use it sparingly.

Here's a shealoe recipe that really works. First take a 16oz tub of shea butter and put it in a pot of hot water and allow it to get soft, then whip it with a hand mixer until it's fluffy (don't put it in the microwave because that will make it grainy) then after it's fluffy add a 1/2 cup of coconut oil and then whip it some more so the coconut oil is mixed well. Now add 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel then mixed it very well. It should be like cake frosting when you finish. You can add essential oils if you like rosemary oil is a great one. You can also use this as a body butter. Adding other oils besides coconut oil will make this too greasy and you might want to try using unrefined shea butter.HTH Here's a great place to buy it from http://www.coastalscents.com/cfwebstore/index.cfm/product/23/unrefined-african-shea-butter.cfm

Alright coconut oil must be the key oil here because so far thats what ive been reading to use, so I think I may make a small batch first to make sure it dont mess up and waste anymore ingredients. thank you :)
