How do you know its time for a protein treatment?

I used to do a hard protein treatment every time I noticed an excessive amount of breakage, mushy hair, and/or stringy strands which was every 2.5/3 months.

How often do you do hard protein treatment?

Can anyone recommed an all natural protein treatment that does not require eggs (vegan)?

whenever i have similar hair symptoms (excessive shedding and breakage) i do a protein treatment. since i used to color my hair all the time, i did protein treatments on a more regular basis, at least once a month, to protect my hair.

im attempting to give myself a break from hair color for a while, so ive had to lighten up on the protein treatments alot.

a simple test to see if you need more protein is take a stand of hair and pull it at both ends. if it stretches alot before breaking, then you need more protein. if it breaks immediately, you need less protein and more moisture.

i use [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Elucence-Extended-Moisture-Repair-Treatment-p-200.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=elucence-extended-moisture-repair-treatment]elucence extended moisture repair treatment[/buylink]. im not sure if its vegan..but here are the ingredients:
Purified Water, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein (and) Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Disodium Cocoamphodipropionate, Guarhydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polysorbate 20, Magnesium Sulfate, Hydrolyzed Silk, Acetamide MEA, Phenoxyethanol (and) DMDM Hydantion (and) Methylparaben (and) Propylparaben, Fragrance, Citric Acid, Blue1, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 40.

This isn't a "hard" protein treatment, but it is a natural, vegan strengthening conditioner. It can be used as a DT (on dry hair) or a regular rinse out. You can get it at Whole Food, HEB, The Vitamin Shoppe and most health food stores.

Im a houston girl too (i live in the country now) and humidity IS a way of life. I LOVE what humidity does to my hair, i don't get why some people hate it (unless they straighten often).
Thanks for the heads up about the swimmers conditioner. I always passed it up because I figured it was only for swimmers. I'll check it out...thanks!

I hear nothing but good things about the elucence conditioners. Everything was good up until the hydrolized silk, silk is not vegan, but thanks. I think some of their other conditioners are, i'll go check those out.

After reading a post by Kathymack, I realized that I needed to do a protein DT. I was getting lots of soft curls, with tons of frizz. I hadn't done a protein DT since the summer. After doing one, the frizz is gone.

Uhh, sorry to guano this thread, but what is "a lot?" My hair stretched a half-centimeter before breaking - is that a lot??

    fyi, I do know that I'm protein-sensitive.

I determine whether I need a protein treatment based on the amount of shedding / breakage.

    I use Hairveda's MethiSativa System.

After staying away from protein for a long while I noticed alot of "hang" to my curls so I knew I need more protein.
I use Komaza's protein treatment once a month. I"m not sure if it's hard protein but it works for me and my daughter.

Hmm thanks! =) I think I'm going to get the AO GPB soon. I really like AOHR, so I'm thinking this will be ok too.

Does it smell weird, the AOGPB? I heard some of the AO stuff smells really horrible...
