I see where they "project" but are all the official votes in, counted, and reported? California just closed their polling places recently.

According to PBS, all of the stations, including CNN, are relying on exit polls. That may have changed as some states have had time to count their votes, but I don't know for sure if all of the votes have been counted in the states that have been called.

I'm not saying that he can't win but the exit polls aren't an exact science.

I'm curious as to when the actual official announcement will be made.

McCain is conceding right now, so I would say it is official.

McCain handled it well and gave a good speech that seemed sincere. I did think it was tacky that people booed. It seemed as if McCain knew he lost way before it was announced.

    haha PartyHair!

I thought McCain's speech was very eloquent. He did a great job. I thought Obama's speech was wonderful as well... who else saw Oprah crying?

That alone, made me laugh through my own fit of crying... I love America!

I laughed hysterically when I saw Jesse Jackson crying. Isn't this the same guy who threatened to rip Obama's n*ts off? It was ironic. :compress: I also thought Oprah looked like a cute little girl crying, even though I'm not a huge fan of hers.

Ya'll I've been crying since yesterday...when I realized that OBAMA might actually win this election. You know as a kid, when people tell kids they can be anything in the world, including the president, I never really believed them when they would tell me that. Now, I look at my 7 year old nephew, and when people tell him that he can be the president of the United States, I know that he DOES believe it!!! I remember my mother taking me and my sister with her when she would work the polls and vote, and now, my sister took my nephew and niece (7 and 2) and its soooo inspirational to see my 2 year old niece yelling "YES WE CAN".

*sorry I'm rambling here but i'm a bundle of emotions and I need to put them down somewhere*

While I didn't laugh, I did kinda snort. But even in his hypocrisy(and jealousy, because he WAS jealous of Obama's success), he can see the gravity of this event. As someone whom was involved in the Civil Rights Movement and marched with MLK Jr., this is HUGE not only to him, but to those whom witnessed and lived through the movement.

    wow. just wow.

    :love5:

in his acceptance speech, he name-checked my grandmother's best friend--the 106-year-old woman. it's surreal. my grandmother would have been 100 this year. i think it would have blown her mind to see this black man elected--and then to hear him honoring her running buddy.

    wow.

An incredible moment in our nation's history. I cherished every second of the process from the run up in the last days, to the experience of voting with historic turnouts, to connecting with friends and family today.

McCain's speech was certainly gracious and Obama's speech struck exactly the right note. He faces a very difficult path, but seems to have the maturity and smarts for it. Also, seems like he has a real shot at restoring our reputation with other nations and extricating ourselves from the mess in iraq. At least, I hope so.

I'm choking up again. I kept getting it together and tearing up again, especially when he mentioned his grandmother not being there to see it. I was getting so emotional listening to his speech anyway, it felt like the kind of beautiful thing that happens in the movies, but it was really real.

As a side note, I saw the OMG!!! thread and immediately knew what it was about.
