A leave in and maybe some Sweet Almond oil or Castor oil? My hair liked glycerin in the summer but now it's just a sticky greasy mess. I have about 2-3 inches of 4a on the top .. an inch of 4a on the sides and an inch of 3C in the back.. this hair is working my last nerve..I'm getting 2 strand twist extentions next week just to keep from cutting it all off .. or worse... relaxing it... dun dunn dunnnnnnn :banghead:
My hair and I are STILL estranged.. I think we need counseling...
That's not my hair in my avi.. umm.. this time.. it's a weave..

I dont...but I do use Sweet almond oil (good for sealing in moisture and adding shine) and castor oil ( very thick, but dries leaving hair soft, never greasy) as my staple oils and I have used them under my JC leave-in or a cream conditioner. It wasn't bad and it's definitely an option if you don't want to deal with buildup and washing from all of the butters, lotions, heavier oils etc. But, since winter is coming (if you live in a colder climate), I would suggest using an actual moisturizer underneath the oils. hth. :dontknow:

I've been doing the same thing recently. Conditioner+Castor Oil as a leave in. The castor oil is thick and sometimes a bit too overwhelming to put over my hair. I try to stick to the middle and front, my dry areas. The good thing is that once it dries my hair feels very soft.

I don't know what I'm going to do when it starts to get really cold outside. I can't keep walking around with wet hair.

Just a leave in? Yes. That's the majority of the time(unless I use a cream styler overtop). A leave in AND oil.....nope. I typically don't use oil like that on my hair, unless my hair is straightened, in twists, or in coils.
A wonderful mix of coils, curls, corkscrews, and kinks.

Thank you for responding... I've tried just using the leave in and my hair just looks dull and dry. Today I did the Cantu Shea and a little sweet almond mixed with castor oil and so far I have curls and a little sheen. *sigh* .. this is WAYYYY harder than I thought..

I think you will like them, but they probably won't play with the Cantu.

I like to put a little butter on my conditioned detangled hair before I apply the KT. Then the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]. Lately I'm using Karen's Body Beautifu followed by maybe a tsp of KT, and then either Theraneem Aloe vera gel or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]. Really liking the Theraneem with this combo, especially applied after I plop.

Only other oils I use are Jamaican Black Castor, grapeseed, and Hairveda Cocasta, and these I tend to use on dry hair or on dry hair over a thin hair lotion, at night.

My hair HATED the Cantu. This is the second time that I tried it and it is definitely going in the product graveyard (under my bathroom sink LOL) I just had to wash it out and I used Suave Humectant and a little sweet almond oil and I'll be wearing a head wrap until I get my [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]/KT. You may want to shampoo after the Cantu because of the silicones. Also Suave Humectant, also has cones -- if you do a (non-sulfate) shampoo every so often to get rid of build-up, you should be okay.

Budget-wise both the N&S and castor oil should last for a good while.

Although I generally do sets, all I use is conditioner and shea butter. Lately, I've only been using one conditioner ([buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-One-Condition-p-55.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacurl-one-condition]Deva One C[/buylink]) and a little shea throughout...works GREATTT!

    Good luck :D

I always use just a leave in (Suave Tropical Coconut as a leave-in) and then apply my oil mixture. (Recipe in my Fotki, it is very simple.)

I don't use all of the fancy creams and pomades that most people use. My wallet can't afford them. The only thing I will use every blue moon is Lottabody setting lotion and Proclaim Curl Activator, but my hair likes proteins.

I've been mixing oil and leave-ins too. Lately its been jojoba butter and Curl Friends leave-in with good results. I also bought Jamiacan Black castor oil for another option to the jojoba butter.

I use that as my gel and it moisturizes. That wouldn't work for me in the cold weather. And in the summer I tend to just use a leave in and gel. I like to mix/layer castor oil with my leave in (Skala Aloe or Giovanni Direct), but that on its own is not enough for winter. I put the oil-leave in mix in when it's wet, but when it's dry/damp I follow with Sheamoisture leave in, which is very buttery.

    LiveGoldin,

It took me a loooonnnnggg time before I figured out what my liked and didn't like. New naturals often forget that people with the hair you admire have often been natural for a long time.

When I first went natural, my hair was hard, dry and rough and I could not find a product that helped with that.

Eventually I learned that I can only apply oil to my hair when it is wet or damp and freshly clean. And that my hair likes butters and warm oil.

It may take you some time, but evenutally you will learn your hair and what it likes. Frustration is almost a "rites of passage" with natural hair.

I totally know where you are coming from OP. I always felt like that when i started out. And now, after much experimentation, I know what works for me and my hair and we get along much better :)

I'm not a huge fan of oils except jojoba on my scalp and the occasional oil rinse (and I like them in my DCs)...ok I guess I am a fan of oils, just not for styling ;)

Thanks so much for all of the replies.. I now have buyers remorse LOL.. It's been unseasonably cold here (Orange County, NY) and I'm really having a hard time getting my hair to look presentable. The only time it looks even SLIGHTLY decent is when I co-wash or wet it in the shower and I can't go out with wet hair every day so I made an appt with my stylist to get 2 strand twist extentions next week. I don't know what else to do ..hopefully giving my hair and my nerves a time out will give us both a chance to get our acts together!

I LOVE this combo!!! I clarified first to get all of the other crap out of my hair, then I put in a little VO5 Strawberries and Cream .. left a little in then put a bit of the Jane Carter N&S then the KT followed by the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink].. I was scared to death at first because my head was a gooey white mess at first .. but when it dried!!! whew..My curls look MUCH better and my hair is soft and moist and this is the 2nd day. I tried to get a good shot with my cell and set it as my avi. Anywhoo.. I'm still getting the 2 strand kinky twists just for a protective style. Thank you so much for all of your help!!

Glad it worked. If you can still get it, Abba Leave-in (in the beige bottle) is very much like KT. I got a 32 oz at TJ Maxx and I'm going back for more. It does have protein in it though, if your protein sensitive.

    Love this oil: http://www.hairproducts.com/view_product_CON-HOL100.htm

Since this weekend I've been using only carrot oil in my wet hair and letting it air dry. So far my hair likes it better than coconut oil and it smells pretty good too for a commercial formulation. You can also use it as a body moisturizer..
