MSM or Biotin???

curlybohocurlyboho Posts: 130Registered Users
I was just curious I have been hearing so much about MSM and Biotin. There isn't to much on this forum about eaither. Does it seem like it helps hair growth? Any side effects?

I already massage my head each night with rosemary and sandalwood, and try to drink as much water as I can. But I'm thinking I should be taking some type of vitamin supplements as well. Any other reccomendations? Thanks in advance!

I take both along with a multi and fish oil. I used to take GNC's skin, hair, nails (which has a little of everything) but lately just been taking separate biotin and MSM. I think they have helped with shedding and a bit with growth. I've been taken them in one form or another for years now, so it's hard to tell. My hair still splits alot, so I think I'm lacking in silica (another vitamin for hair). My nails grow super fast and very rarely break though.

Some say biotin makes their skin breakout...I haven't noticed this, but I use alot of things on my skin (retin-a) so maybe it stays clear.

They are safe vitamins to try out (I haven't heard of any bad side effects) and are inexpensive when on sale (buy 1 get 1 free sales and such). Try them and see how they work for you.

I started using an MSM supplement from Whole Foods and taking prenatal vitamins in mid-September. I think it's helped my hair grow a bit faster. I will know with more certainty in a few months if it's really working or if it's just wishful thinking on my part. The MSM takes at least 6 weeks to start working in your system.

MSM is great for lengthing the growth phase of your hair growth,Biotin is great for hair growth. Some people do report getting acne so you would have to try it out and see how it works for you.

I do both. I was having good growth with Biotin but it sped up when I added MSM. I had some breakout on my scalp when I started the Biotin but I cut my dose down and eased it back up week by week. My scalp cleared up in about a week. You need to drink plenty of water with it. Biotin apparently brings all impurities to the surface faster and that explain some of the breakouts.

You need to also watch for allergies. Some MSM complex supplements may have shellfish in them.

Some hair vitamins have plenyy of them both, like Nourishair. Nourishair definitely helped with growth, but I went back to a regular multivitamin because I can't find a hair multivitamin that contains enough calcium. I hate taking a bunch of pills.

I've taken a multi plus biotin on the side, but didn't notice much change in growth rate with that. Could be that I was only taking 1000mcg though, which isn't a large amount.

Well I ended up getting a supplement, its just a hair skin & nails from walmart. But it has 3000 mg's of biotin, vitamin B, zinc, horsetail and collagen. So hopefully this will help some. I still haven't been able to find any msm but I would like to try and get some of that too...

You can also find MSM at any GNC and the brand from GNC has no added ingredients.

MSM they have it at Trader Joes for $5. I started taking it last week, because I read so much about it in this site. A lot of people seem to swear by it. What HAS definitely worked for me, and you and I seem to have about the same lenght same type of hair (since wanting to get it longer) is PHYTO (paris) Phytophanere. They sell it at higher end stores (Nordstrom, Neimans) and it's pricy. Recently I saw they carry it in Sephora. The actual amount of Biotin it contains is not that high. But perhaps it's not necessary. They say the body will use what it needs and then get rhid of the rest. IDK. all I know is that I've been taking them for like 3 weeks and my hair is definitely longer. And it's not just me, my friend commented on it too and specifically asked if I was taking anything to make my hair grow. Just FYI. If you don't mind spending a little more ( $50 or get some gift certificates during the holidays, that's how I got mine), I would definitely recommend these.
oh and the bottle is a two months supply.

if anyone is curious on the ingredients, it's a whole bunch of oils (wheat germ oil, carrot oil, rice bran oil, fish oil, borrage seed oil, brewers yeast and sun flower oil)

I take both, through the bit of research I have done I have come out of it with the understanding that MSM lengthens the growth stage of you hair and biotin helps to make the hair shaft thicker....I need and want BOTH!

I take the hair, skin, and nails vitamin from Walmart, too. I get MSM from Fleximin, and I am taking extra Biotin. I hope it speeds up the growing process and thickens my hair. Walmart has MSM in a 1000 dose per pill.

You can get it here for what I think is a good cost: http://www.puritan.com/joint-support-062/msm-1000-mg-capsules-011893

My mom uses them to get her Glucosamine Chondroitin, and there prices are great! You can even get MSM with Glucosamine Chondroitin added here.

I take Biotin and haven't noticed any breakouts (other than usual) and I was using the MSM + Glucosamine Chon. for a while. I don't know if my hair was growing faster, but I didn't notice any side effects.
I have 3c hair that I haven't straightened in over 5 years. It's just past shoulder length when dry, and almost waist length when pulled straight.

05/12/09 Still CG. Cowashing with VO5 Lavender Luster. I then condition with Giovanni Smooth as Silk. Styling with VO5 Lavender Luster conditioner with my wide-toothed comb.

I just checked out the label on the Puritan's Pride website and was all excited to give it a try - then I read the warning to avoid taking if you have a history of kidney stones. That's me! I'm just dying for my hair to be long again!!! I bought some Biotin tablets, now I juwst need to remember to actually take them. If only I didn't have to rush in the morning....

I'd like to take biotin supplements, but I'm trying to gauge how much faster my hair will grow. Like an inch a month? I have no idea.

Well I have been doing the hair skin and nails, which has biotin and a MSM supplement for a month or so now. My hair does seem to be growing its hard to tell though with my "spring-age" I'm not sure how to measure if it is longer or not but at least it looks nice.

I have only had one issue and I'm wondering if some of those that have taken these supplements for a while could help.

It seems like since I have been taking them my hair has a ton of dead/dry skin/ dandruff???? Like seriously its kinda gross how many flakes I have, I'm following my normal routine, nothing has changed exept the supplements. My hair is just shedding dry dead flakes like you wouldn't beleive. I fluff my hair around and its white around where I sat, some of the flakes are even the size of a pencil eraser. Have any of you had this problem one these supplements??? Any other ideas about what it could be??? Its really starting to gross me out what should I do???

I have been on the CG routine for the last 3-4 years, and I really don't want to have to go back to poo because my hair hates it.:confused5:

    I've read that using both MSM *and* biotin gives the best results, so I'm using both. I'm fairly sure I'm seeing results from having used biotin for a month or so (but I go by eye rather than measuring, so it's hard to say). I only just added MSM to my regime, so I can't tell if it's helping or not yet ^^;;

As for side effects, the most common ones I've heard about are big cyst-like pimples from biotin and headaches from MSM, but both of these can be helped by drinking lots of water.

    HTH! :)

How come you can't just take a regular vitamin? Isn't having too much biotin in your diet bad for you after a while? Vitamins have everything in them, so why not take those instead? Just asking. :)

A regular vitamin might do the trick for some, but others need that extra push.I've been on MSM and Biotin since April 2006 and it has helped greatly with my hair growth.Actually,I'm taking 10,000mcgs.(10mgs.) now,and and extra 600mcgs.in my pre-natal vitamins, and I'm still taking 2,000mgs.of MSM.A friend of mine takes 20mgs. of Biotin with no side effects and gets faster hair growth.Hope this helps.

Here in the States, I've actually only seen the tablets. I guess mine are really powder in capsules, though.

I wonder if that would work just as well, in water? Or in juice or something?
