Layer length?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but the thread on getting volume on top made me wonder, and since I'm thinking of getting my hair trimmed and reshaped soon I thought I would ask.
Ok, so many people here talk about layers to help with getting some volume on top. I have layers, but they don't start until way down just past my shoulders (my hair is bsl curly right now, and I'm trying to grow it longer). How far up should layers start in order to help with volume on top? I have what I think is 2/3a hair, and it definitely doesn't curl as well when it's too short, so I worry about getting the top layers too short and them not curling properly.
Any ideas? Or can someone point me in the right direction to find this info?

Help would be truly lovely!
Thanks

My hair's a little past shoulder length when curly, and my shortest layer starts around my ear/cheekbone. I was a little worried that, liek you said, that shortest layer wouldn't curl very well, as my hair generally likes being a little longer but those are actually my curliest strands. Underneath where it's long and heavy, my hair's only wavy.

So I'd say it kind of depends on your hair. Some people have curlier canopies than underneath, others are totally opposite. If your canopy is LESS curly, I think the shorter layers might not work as well...

Try getting your layers just a little bit shorter, that way if it doesn't work out the way you want, you won't have to wait forever for them to grow out.

Shorter layers only work for me when my hair is above my shoulders. Otherwise, I need long layers.
