Totally Off Subject-What Foundation/Makeup Line Do You Use??

akilamoniqueakilamonique Posts: 302Registered Users
I know this is totally off subject, but I posted a similar question elsewhere on the board, but figured I would get a better response here.
Now, excuse the assumption, but I am assuming that most of the women in this particular thread are African American, and could probably do better with pointing me in the right direction.
I am looking for a new foundation. In the past I have tried covergirl, bobbi brown, mary kay, and I'm sure many more, but I have yet to find anything I love.

I am 33,(check out the photo for my complexion)- Maybe Jada? Jill Scott? I don't know anyway. I am prone to breakouts, have some dry patches and oily spots, and nothing makes both areas happy!
What foundations are you all using?? I'm not too concerned about the price if I can get it on ebay, after checking it out in the store. I'm thinking maybe something water-based would work best for me. Who knows, i've never been really good at this kind of thing

I also have oily/combination skin, and I've had great success with Bare Minerals. It doesn't aggravate breakouts. I used it a few years ago and stopped, and recently revisited it....now I'm wondering why I stopped, LOL.

I wear the "Warm Deep" foundation. I originally ordered a starter set off of Sephora.com, but you can easily find the makeup line at Ulta or Sephora stores.

Nope, never had the ashy look. I use the foundation, then a bit of the "Warmth" All-Over Face Color, then the Mineral Veil (which is like a setting powder). Sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. It takes just a couple of minutes to brush it on.

I use Bare Minerals too and I highly recommend their product! My skin feels soft and it gives a "flawless" look, unlike regular foundation.

For lipsticks and eyeshadow I use MAC
I bought some make-up from Origins for my daughter and I'm very impressed with their lipstick so far.

I use Revlon Colorstay makeup with Softflex for combination/oily skin in carmel. This foundation is great, stays on for hours, and gives you a natural flawless look.

You should look for something oil free and non-comedogenic if you are prone to break outs. I used to use Clinique, Iman and I recently purchased Smashbox (which I haven’t used as yet).

Also, I have an issue with oily skin and I’ve tried it all from toners to mattifying lotions to blot papers/powders etc. I recently stumbled on this sheer blot power from Urban Decay. I highly recommend it if you are experiencing a similar issue with an overly oily t-zone. You can try/buy it at Sephora.

I wore Bare Minerals for two years and the Bismuth Oxychloride set my face on fire. It would itch like I had fiber glass in my skin sometimes. Bismuth Oxychloride is what BE uses to give their foundation that dewy finish. After awhile, I could also tell the foundation was too red for my skin and on my dry skin, made me look a bit cakey. So, I decided to try a different brand and now I use MAC foundations. I use their studio tech cream foundation which is water based and great for dry skin. It is also non-comodogenic and hypo allerginic. For the past month I've been using their Studio Select SPF 15 liquid foundation and I think I love it a little more than my cream because it's lighter. For me, both don't dry out my skin more, don't irritate it and match my skin perfectly. I wear NC50 in both foundations.

I tried to try mineral makeup again and got samples from everyday minerals and those made me look very ashen and aged me quite a bit. It felt heavy on my skin.

I don't have to use a primer because my face doesn't tend to get oily unless I'm sweating or have been wearing my makeup for hours on end, but something that apparently works wonders as a primer is monistat anti chafing gel.

I have very oily, acne prone skin and started using Sally's Femme Couture Pressed Mineral Makeup a couple of weeks ago and love it. It offers full coverage, lasts all day and looks natural. Most makeup causes me to break out and usually has melted off of my face by mid-day - but not this. This makeup lasts most of the day for me. I have tried Bare Minerals and like this brand by Sally's a lot better and it's only $12.99. They also have the loose powder (I just prefer the pressed). If you prefer loose powder, they have a special for a starter kit for only $19.99. I have included a link below:

Ditto! This is good stuff. I finally learned that you don't always have to pay a fortune for make-up. I use drugstore make-up all the time. I make sure it's hypoallergenic, oil-free and fragrance free. I love Loreal for lips and Maybelline for my eyes.

I use GloMinerals. My friend who told me about it said it's made by the same company that makes BareMinerals, but I don't know how true that is. What I like about it is that the color I use, Chestnut Medium, is the only foundation I've ever found that matches my skin perfectly. It goes on smoothly and it makes my skin look better but still natural instead of "made up" if you know what I mean. It may be hard to find, but I buy it on eBay.

    Hope this helps

In the past I used the color stay for combination skin and I actually liked it but the coverage was a bit to sheer for my post acne trouble spots. I am currently using MAC liquid foundation which works a bit better for fuller coverage. I am tempted to try the bare minerals but am hesitant because I have not had great success with other mineral make up.

BTW, we better get some reviews and possibly some pics with the product you decide upon! Happy searching!

I use a concealer stick from Bobbi Brown, to cover up my acne scars, then I use Prescriptives custom blend powder. I used Bare Minerals before, and the color was amazing, but it rubbed off. It would come off on my clothes, my hands, everything. If that doesn't happen for you, then I say use it.

    Bare Minerals rocks!

I hardly ever wear full-makeup (usually gloss, maybe mascara). Whenever I do, I get so many compliments on my skin. Most people think I have no make-up on at all.

My skin is sensitive. I have had issues with break-outs from make-up in the past. Not with this stuff. It's awesome!:toothy7::toothy7:

I worked at Sephora for 3 years. I absolutely hate Bare Minerals Foundation. In my experience as a Make-Up Artist, it makes most women of color look ashy, gray or dead. I do have 2 friends that use it and love it, but both are lighter complexion (one of them also works at Sephora and says that no one in her store uses in on women of color).

I dont wear foundation on a regular basis. I actually use concealer and maybe tinted moisturizer set with powder. Tinted Moisturizer is a great alternative if you are looking for sheer to light coverage. Brands I like are Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 or Becca Luminous Skin Colour.

If you are going to use a liquid, it should be oil free. Sue Devitt Studio 70% triple seaweed gel foundation is good. Its full coverage, 70% water-based and oil free.

I also recommend using a powder foundation like Mac Studio Fix. I used it for years, sometimes I switch it up but I always go back to it (when I need full coverage). Iman Second to None Foundation Stick have the best color selection, are oil free and have a powdery finish.

I used to use Proactiv but for me it seemed to stop being as effective after a couple of months of use. I ran across University Medical's "acnefree" brand at Target and I absolutely love it. It's like $20 for the set they sell some of the items like the spot treatment and toners separately if you prefer and they have a regular strength and severe acne options. You might wanna look into it, I am loving the price, the results and not missing the shipping cost or time delay!

J'adore Bare Minerals. I do have a lighter complexion. I've never felt that it made me look ashy, but I could see how that would happen if the shade was too light, because of the reflective properties of mineral makeup. And yet the same thing happens if you wear a too-pale foundation or powder by any cosmetic maker.

I bought the $60 starter set with the brushes and everything and it lasted me more than two years. I love that it looks and feels so light and natural, and I've never received so many compliments. It's definitely worth a try.

Ms. Akilamonique, it is very similar to the Proactiv kit. If you buy the set it comes with the cleanser the toner and the repair lotion. Sometimes they have bonus packs that include the concentrated spot treatment. As far as the lotion being sold alone... I haven't seen it at any of the Targets that I frequent, but I have noticed the toner and spot treatment packaged separately. If I feel like I need additional moisture I use a bit of my clean and clear dual action moisturizer.

I use Pur Minerals---it is sold at Ulta. My shade is the dark---and it works wonderfully and makes me feel as if I have nothing on. The starter kit is 37.50 and includes blush and bronzer powder. I also purchased the mineral mist for an additional 21.00 and it really sets your makeup and makes you have a natural glow.

So, Bare Minerals contains titanium dioxide (i.e. sunscreen), which in high quantities can cause chalkiness on any skin tone.

I'm with MissKinkyCoily, I find most foundations whether liquid or mineral, don't feel or look good, I've tried several mineral lines and all I have to say is flawless/schmawless. I have good brushes too, but end up feeling dry and looking chalky/opaque, even with my relatively pale skin.I have freckles and aging skin, which means darkness around the eyes near my nose that is just -- aging. My goal is radiant, color balanced skin with the freckles showing, but softened.

My face's best friends are concealer and moisturizer (I just discovered Guinot talk about sticker shock); high SPF sunblock (Shesheido SPF55) and Smashbox primer. These give my skin a nice sheer protective "cushion" for color to work. Over that it becomes about balancing tone and color. The freckles will still show when I'm finished, but my uneven/red spots will be gone.

I brush on Fresh Absolute concealer (corner of my eyes, outer side of eyes, any blemishes, maybe a bit on those nose to mouth creases. Most of my make up goes into evening out my eyelid tone, giving my eyes some depth and "pop".

Then it's a powder highlighter blush on my "apples". Only after everything else is on, do I brush on a tinted moisturizer (Trish McEvoy Protective Shield moisturizer in Honey) on forehead, nose, lower cheeks, upper lip -- around the blusher. It's a very natural sheer look but nice and brings needed color to my face which is washed out. McEvoy is expensive but long lasting, and the pigments are exceptional. My tube of tinted moisturizer has lasted since last November.

    ETA - I have combination oily/normal skin.

Just wanted to add that tinted moisturizer, concealer, and a bit of powder every now and then (i use the Bobbi Brown concealer/powder combo...the powder is Pale Yellow) make my skin glow. Without the powder the look doesn't last all day. It looks very natural but I still get a bit of coverage. I think this is a good starter for anyone.

I use MAC, Becca, and Nars exclusively. I've been disappointed whenever I have deviated from MAC or Nars, and Becca is a new one, but seems really promising.

I have dry skin. But I have been blessed by God to have had clear skin my entire life. I do not have to wear any foundation and never have. I do wear blush, rouge, eyeshadow and etc. I used to use Clinique and MAC, but I recently discovered Bobbi Brown and the rest is history. I am a Bobbi Brown Cosmetic junky. I love her natural looks, and her make-up is very high quality and does not damage/breakout the skin. I also have extremely sensitive skin. I am allergic to chemical SPF products. For skin care I love Aveda's Tourmaline and Botanical Kinetics line. I also use a lot of Origins products for skin care. I am currently using some of the skin care products by Karen's Body Beautiful and they are working nicely as well.
