Clay Mask

I know all the TE detox people have been doing clay washes and masks, but thought I'd begin a thread devoted to that--for those who don't want to go through the whole TE "process." I've "backed" into a more natural hair care process. I won't say that's all I'll do in the future, but I am using more natural products.

Today, I did a clay mask with the Aztek Secret Indian Healing Clay, yogurt, honey, coconut oil and AVC. I steamed it with my microwave heat cap for 30 minutes, used my Swastik Shikakai shampoo bar to help remove it, AVC rinse, KBB hair milk as rinse out. I used KBB nectar as my leave in, [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] and diffused. Air dryed the rest of the way, scrunched the crunch with KBB butter (and my radiant dryer.) Anyone who say me would say I'm a 3b! I usually have random 3a type curls, that do start near the root. Today, I have even corkscrews--which I get, but not so uniform.

I'd also say that my frizz is WAY down since going more natural.

kathymack, how heavy is the KBB butter? I usually can't use anything to scrunch out the crunch, i.e., JC Nourish & Shine just softened my curls up so much they deflated.

I couldn't use the JC N & S, either. It was very too heavy for my hair. It's easy to overuse the KBB a little goes a long way. If you just use a smidgen to "coat" your hands, it's good. If you try to reduce frizz in the afternoon--lightly coat your hands, rub over your canopy and STOP!!! More is not better and makes it worse. Since I've been using more natural products and the shampoo bar, my hair seems to "drink" it up a little better.

When I searched bentonite clay, the Aztec came up. The other type that people use to "clarify" is rhassoul clay. I think you can buy it at Whole Foods. There were lots of places that had it online. The cheapest I found was MotherNature.com.

kathymack, ITA with you. Since going all natural, my hair has been so much easier to deal with. I don't have that product gunk feel anymore, like when I was using Deva. I discovered the KBB last winter and I've been madly in love ever since. I know you co-wash; I can't - my scalp gets like a flaky buildup. But the all natural shampoos having been working great for me. Sorry for the guano.

Now explain your clay hair mask. Is it actually clay like you make pottery with? What does it actually do for your hair? Details, details, details please. You know how demanding us curlies are. :)

The clay came in a jar--a big white one like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]. It's a powder. If you do a search on here, there's some discussion of it. I did a google search, too. The jar said to mix it with equal amount of water and AVC. I keep a recipe journal and keep notes when I see something. The clay mask page has: bentonite or rhassoul clay, water, honey, carrier oil, EO, yogurt, baby food banana, AVC and coconut milk.

I listed what I did in the original post. I think it's a cross between a DT and a detox. If my hair stays like this, I'll have to reclassify to 3b!!! I was looking at some of my fotki pictures--and it's much curlier.

I have been using the shampoo bar--about every three days. Today, I'm a little waxy from it. It's different from that producty feel and very soft. The threads say that goes away--and it doesn't look bad. I think they are even more natural than the shampoos. I'll be interested in what you think. If this works, we'll all have a lot on the swap board, LOL!!

Also, I got highlights last Saturday. The color is very soft and natural looking--like when I was a kid and spent summers in the sun. The clay mask didn't effect it at all.

Thanks kathymack!!! Do you think this would work well for really dry hair. Would clay make it more dry. My hair really sucks up moisture.

    Kathymack,
What a great idea! I wonder if I mix the TE with some of the ingredients you used, if that would work almost as well? Maybe add the carrier oil, honey and yogurt?

I might just give it a try and see what happens.

I am so with you on this routine, I love clay masks. I wash my hair before (Chagrin Valley). I've used a similar mixture to yours, but last time just used clay, water, EVOO and honey and the mix just slipped onto my hair.

Sorry, I was away for the weekend--so I'm just answering. SBB, I read your posts--so I'm sure you thoughts on this were included in my notes.

SC, I don't think it will be drying at all if you use a carrier oil in your mix. I also used a homemade yogurt that had cream added. You may want to use a full fat yogurt or coconut milk.

Pigreyhound, as long as the TE is clay--it's good to go. Of course, I think the TE is a lot more expensive.

I happened to have a couple bottles of the TE, so figured it would save me a step in getting clay and mixing it.

Worked wonderfully, BTW! I added a bit of honey, some hair oil, and a small amount of aloe to pull it all together and did the microcap. Great hair!

    Thanks for the excellent idea!

I think I like using the TE that way more than for washing. The CV bars work well for me and I water wash or co-wash with KBB products so the TE is more of a mask for me anyway. The extra conditioners and the heat make it work that much better.

Glad you like it. I just could see going through the TE detox. I'm doing other shampoo bars--didn't care for the one CV I tried. Will have to get up the nerve to try the other. My hair has really been great since going with the natural products. I just want the waxiness from the bars to go away, LOL!

How many of the CV "flavors" did you try? I get waxy buildup with some of them, but not all of them. And honestly, when I stick to the aloe vera gel/flax seed gel combo, I don't find I need to wash much at all.

So far, the Olive Oil/Babbassu and the Chocolate Almond are working fine for my hair. The honey butter that rymorg2 loves so much has not worked for me yet. It feels very waxy. Many of the shampoo bars felt waxy, oddly enough, while the regular bars didn't.

The TE wash was great and I am glad I did the detox, but have to say that I like not using the clay wash every day!

It was the honey butter. I bought several other bars, so far I like the others better. I only use them every 3/4 days--so it's hard. I want to add shikakai to conditioner, so that's on my list. I need at least one other head of hair, LOL!! I want to buy those dairy whips that CGF is talking about. Will it ever stop???

I'm going to try a mask DT today to help with my protein treatment.

Can you help me out with some approximate measurements of what you used?

I have no idea how much liquid the powder needs to reach a good hair mask consistency, but I'm thinking 1/4 c clay powder, and then oil, yogurt, and honey to make it the right consistency??

    Thanks for your help.

Sounds about right. You have more hair than I do. I probably used 2 heaping T of the clay, 4oz of thick homemade yogurt and maybe a T each of honey and oil.
