I love Halloween, it's my favorite holiday! I just got what may be my all time favorite decorations to celebrate the season, Skel-A-Flamingos:

Just wondering if anyone else has cool Halloween decorating ideas, I'm always looking for ways to make the yard a little weirder!

i LOVE halloween. a couple years ago, i made my parents' front deck look like a pirate ship (complete with a flag!), and tried to make the yard look like a graveyard at gallows point (that didn't turn out as well as i liked it, but i didn't spend a lot of time on that part).

last year, my boyfriend and i carved some really cool pumpkins. i tried to make our place look like a haunted forest, but unfortunately time and money wouldn't allow it to look that good.

you could try to make your house look like the bates motel, maybe. that place is pretty weird. ;) those flamingos are awesome.

here are a few pictures of our pumpkins - it was the first time i had ever carved anything other than a regular jack-o-lantern face, so it was pretty fun. :) and i'm pretty proud of them.

Your avatar rocks Wile-E! Dang, I wish I was more artistic (and less klutzy, sharp objects are not my friends), I'm so impressed with your carving skills Rebecca, especially the Alfred Hitchcock! This is the time of year I wish I had an old Victorian house, it's hard to make a 3 bedroom ranch menacing!

i know what you mean! the house i grew up in (my parents' house) is a big old house, with a coal bin and everything. it could be quite spooky, especially in the fall..

Ella, you must tell us where you got your flamingos!!! Or the manufacturer -- I'll probably have to try to get them on-line.

    They're wonderful.

Continue with the Halloween talk -- I can never have too much Halloween . . .

So, All this Halloween talk made me get my decorations out... My husband said it was WAY too early for actual Halloween decorations, so I just put up some plain pumpkins fo rFall. I mean, it IS September, right?! The problem is- we don't have much of a "fall season". Whatever- I am gonna wait to do outside decorating until next week or so. I want to make a scarecrow, but I am worried that it might freak me out....haha! This year, I want to do a lot of natural decorating. For example, I have a large glass vase that I filled with twigs. Sounds stupid, but look spretty good. I also filled a wooden bowl lined with a green cloth napkin with nuts. Very Autumn-ish...Outside I plan of filling my wheelbarrow with Pumpkins and sitting it in the yard.

I need to figure out what my costume will be this year and in a hurry! I always try to go for a "total transformation" type thing. The year before last I was Marilyn Monroe and last year I was Cleopatra. I really love Halloween!

I was surprised to find that Martha Stewart actually had some real nifty Halloween ideas.

I got mine at an Ace Hardware, but they are available online:

My problem is I don't know if I can wait til October to put them out! BTW I am seriously jealous of all the pumpkin carving skill here! Everyone is so artistic and (unlike me) can handle knives without stitches being involved:wink:

Hee! I can't believe you remember that  Yep, I am a serious Halloween Girl. I have at least a dozen huge plastic crates full of decorations (a lot are homemade) and costumes. I've gotten a lot of my ideas from Martha Stewart. There's a bunch of photos of just decorations over here, and some from another year over here. You can't tell in the photos, but for the bloody bathroom, we swapped out all the lightbulbs for red ones, which really freaked people out. If you're interested in costume photos, there's several other albums in my main Picasa page. If you want to know about how anything was made, just let me know and I'm more than happy to share!

Sadly, since having kids - especially a toddler who's now afraid of *monsters* - pretty much all my decorations are put away indefinitely. Much too scary for the kiddos. I will put a few things up, but I really just can't stand smiling pumpkins and other non-creepy Halloween stuff! I might actually start giving some of it away, since it could be years till I can use it again. Sniff. I miss me my Halloween.

So, because of this thread, I couldn't help but put my Halloween decorations out-even though I promised my husband I would only put "FALL" stuff out. I only put out a few halloween things. I'm trying to be good, but y'all got me all excited!

I am loving the pumpkins. How on earth do you do them?

Why is Halloween a big holiday in the US?
Fat does not make you fat. It's actually pretty important.

I ordered this dress recently, then when I got it, I realized it's a TAD too costume-y to wear to a wedding...I looked like I was missing a couple of Andrews Sisters...

So...I want to be a 1940's girl for Halloween :)

    free candy.

    j/k ;)

i dunno. for me, it's kind of a carry-over from childhood. i LOVED fall and halloween and how magical everything felt.

i have noticed that over the past several years halloween has grown in popularity with adults. i'm not sure why that is. it could be because it's another excuse to party, or because you can dress skanky without being called a skank, or maybe people really do love candy that much. i dunno! :)

so let's start talking costumes. for a long time i wanted to be the girl on the moon from the miller high life bottles, but i'm not sure. i was also thinking of being rosie the riveter.

but i like being spooky, and my costume ideas generally change five times before i settle on something. :evil1:

I agree, the 1940's dress is awesome, very Rita Hayworth! I always want to come up with something clever like that and I always end up being a vampire (I'm really pale and hate the sun so I get teased about being one of the "undead" all year!) As a teacher, the only thing I don't like about Halloween is how wired the kids are the day after:blob7:

I am not doing anything clever this year. I am going as 1993, which was a very good year for me and I miss grunge. So yay, 1993.

For those who can't draw, there are stencil kits for the pumpkins.

I don't know why it's so big, aside from the fact that it's so fun. There are groups who stay away from it due to religious reasons, finding it to be to Pagan.

As for me, I'm going to be a female version of Tom Baker's Dr Who. I really want an excuse to own a scarf like that. :)

I'm kinda bummed about it this year. I'll be a week or so away from giving birth, and too big to fit in my renaissance dress. I've been looking for pregnancy friendly Ren-fest wear and haven't found anything.

    :sad8:

I really like the flamingos. I put reindeer ears on mine for christmas, but never thought about dressing them up for halloween. I'm sure I could find some mini witches hats.
