Dry Tangly hair

Hi there,
I've been co-washing my 5 year olds hair for 20 days now and it's not improving its getting worse

Her hair is feeling really dry at the moment and its sooo frizzy,
I have been using Inecto coconut conditioner but a few days ago I used a sample of the Faith in Nature Aloe vera conditioner, and used [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Knot-Today-p-207.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-knot-today-leaveindetangler]KCKT[/buylink] and Pure Aloe vera to detangle/condition- its just got worse in the past few days -it's dry tangly and dull it feels in worse condition than it was when I first started co-washing (20 days ago)
Ive ordered some CV shampoo bars hoping they are the answer, but I don't want to make her hair worse

I just want to cut it all off at the moment :sad1:

I have a friend that went the "CG" route with me at the same time. Her hair is really soft and fine, very much like what most children have. She did ok for about a week with the CO washing, but she got absolutely frustrated this morning as her hair felt stringy/tangly/ick that she broke down and shampooed it with a sulfate shampoo. Low and behold, it actually helped.

Maybe your daughter needs at least a LITTLE shampoo every now and then to cleanse and get rid of any build up? There are several no-poo cleansers that could help, and 'low poo' shampoos that just don't have sulfates... they might be worth a try.

Do any of those have protein in them? She could just have a sensitivity.

MimsTX- I used [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Hair-Cleansing-Cream-p-103.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-hair-cleansing-cream]Jessicurl HCC[/buylink] when we went on holiday and still have 1/2 a bottle left so I may have to use it :sad1:

curlyjenn10- No I don't think they contain Protein- I've just checked but then again I'm not too good with ingredients ;-)

Hmm... i'm trying to figure out what it could be. I think I found all the correct ingredients listings, and I didn't see anything that would cause this. I know some people have frizz problems with aloe vera gel, but I'm not sure if it's because of the aloe vera or some other ingredient. I'd post this in the general section since there's more traffic there. I'm sure someone will know what's going on.

Also, HCC isn't that bad since it doesn't have sulfates. Most 2's are modified and use some form of low-poo every week. If she's having problems being strict CG, it may be worth it to switch to modified for a while and see how that works.

Well, Ive washed it this morning using [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Hair-Cleansing-Cream-p-103.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-hair-cleansing-cream]Jessicurl HCC[/buylink] and conditioned using Inecto Coconut conditioner and all the underneath of her hair has gone matted :(

Ive used a wide tooth comb and [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Knot-Today-p-207.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-knot-today-leaveindetangler]KCKT[/buylink] to detangle and then put some aloe vera gel on
My hubby has taken her to work with him this morning so I'll see what its like when they get back
I'm seriously considering getting it cut and starting again,

I'll try to discribe my problem:

The top area of her hair (canopy) looks frizzy when dry but is really easy to detangle when wet, the underneath and ends of her hair look curly and quite nice when dry but I can't detangle when wet as they get matted and tangled and thats when her hair breaks :?

Can you list the ingredients in the coconut conditioner? Maybe we can find a culprit? You may want to consider using a different conditioner anyways to detangle, since what you have doesn't seem to be working well. AOHR is quite rich and may help with detangling and dryness.

    Inecto Coconut oil conditioner:

    Ingredients:
Aqua, Ceteryl Alcohol, Stearalkonium chloride, Cetrimonium chloride, coconut oil, Parfum, Magnesium Nitrate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Methylisothiazolinone, Citric acid.

Anything there that could be the culprit?- although her hair was the same when I used the Aloe Vera conditioner to co-wash 2 days before I thought it was build up- thats why I shampoo'd today

    Aloe vera Conditioner:

Ingredients: Aqua (Water from the Lake District), Aloe Barbadensis (Organic), Cetearyl alcohol (Coconut based wax), Cetrimonium chloride (Palm oil based conditioning agent), Brassica oleifera, Citrus limonum (Lemon Oil), Citrus aurantifolia (Lime Oil), Melaleuca alternifolia, Chlorophyllin - copper complex (natural colour), Limonene, Citral

Well, I know stearalkonium chloride is a softening agent.

Regular lemon and lime can be drying if used to much. I'm not sure if the oils would act the same way, but it's something worth looking into.

I use the Inecto as a co-wash but I use a different conditioner on the ends, Biolage conditioning balm usually. I don't think that the Inecto would be moisterising enough on its own. I have certainly noticed the difference when I have just used it.

It does also feel like something is building up on my hair when I use it! I low poo though so I am not too fussed and don't always use it either.

I would give your daughters hair a deep treatment with some oil and see if lack of moisture is the problem.

I have super fine, wavy hair btw. And mine tangles if you just look at it!

Thanks for the advice I think it may be the Aloe vera gel?? but she definatly needs some more moisturising conditioner-
I have ordered some [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Weekly-Deep-Conditioning-Treatment-p-106.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-weekly-deep-conditioner-treatment]Jessicurl WDT[/buylink] so I could use that after co-washing?? but it wont come for about a week so I desparatly need something I can buy in Boots or superdrug as I've totally run out of conditioner:eek:

I use oil in dry hair emergencies. Just had such a bad conditioner emergency yesterday, and a little Jojoba oil worked wonders again. Made my hair soft and feeling moisturized right away. I just use a tiny bit on dry hair. My hair is a combo of wavy and 3a.

After reading about everyone using AV gel I gave it a go - but it left me dry and frizzy with the worst hair day I've had for years so it's now being used as after-sun. I'm sorry the FiN Aloe conditioner didn't help.

I don't know if they still sell it, but when my daughter was small I bought a detangler made by Aussie and it had so much slip it made her hair really easy to comb through.

Quite a bit of the Paul Mitchell range is CG so it may be worth having a look (there's bound to be a local salon that sells it) - and they do a 'lite detangler conditioning spray' although I can't find an ingredient list.

Janeyliz- Thanks so much for the sample of FIN Aloe vera conditioner, I think it was the Aloe vera gel that dried her hair out as it did with yours, I really don't know why?? I found the Aloe vera conditioner it really good for co washing but not moisturising enough for her ends- I may buy some just for co-washing

I didn't go to Boots today because I realised that I had some Rosemary FIN conditioner that Kat180 sent me, I tried it on her a couple of weeks ago and found it less moisturising than the Aloe Vera but I thought it will do for today and then I had a thought..... I could make it more moisturising...... so I added a drop of olive oil and a drop of jojoba oil to the conditioner and WOW it detangled like a dream

When she got out of the bath I used a wide tooth comb, combed it through and trimmeed all her ends and layers!!, I could actually comb through her hair(I know this doesnt sound amazing but it is) it's dried a bit greasy near her roots but the ends look a lot better

I have also posted this in the general forum as I'm so happy Ive found a way of detangling her hair!!!!-m and it got the trim it needed even if it may be a bit wonky (she wouldn't keep her head still) :laughing7:

I'm going to jump in here and HIGHLY recommend the WDT as a leave in. I've been using it every time I wash/co-wash for over a year and 1-it's never let me down AND 2-it makes my hair SO soft and silky it's ridiculous. 3- it helps with detangling for the next co wash, because it "slicks" the hair shaft down and already has the natural oils like jojoba that you add to the other condish.
You really don't need much. I think that you might want to also try Nature's Gate Awapuhi co. It's for fine hair and works great for cowashing also Trader Joe's Refresh as well. .

I think I went a bit crazy with the scissors :sad8: her hair looks quite a bit shorter tonight when it dried- but it felt so much better :toothy7:

SheaM would be fine for her hair I think. It used to be one of my HGs until my hair finally became healthy and then it was too heavy. BUT, it can't hurt to try it out...no?
A word of unsolicited advise on detangling...if she will let you, try to detangle her hair while you are rinsing out the "rinse Out" conditioner. I can only detangle this way, as my hair is so long and coarse. Then, don't try to detangle while you are applying the leave in to dripping wet hair. I do a rinse/detangle then I gather my hair from the ends up to my scalp and press the water out a couple of times, then I squish and rake lightly in the WDT and then the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Confident-Coils-Styling-Solution-p-116.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-confident-coils-styling-solution]CCSS[/buylink] then White Boots and finally the Biotera gel. (again seems like a lot, but my hair is reeallly long) then I plop the whole mess in a t-shirt for anywhere between 15 min to 2 hours (weekends). Then, I carefully unwrap and carefully shake out and sort of gently arrange the wet strands a bit and go on about my merry way and eventually scrunch out crunchies later on.

It sounds like her hair likes oil like mine does. I've just been using plain coconut oil as a DT and tried Avocado oil on the weekend, that worked well too. Nice and cheap too!
  • mumofcurlygirlmumofcurlygirl Posts: 472Registered Users
Feralcurls- Her ends liked the oil, but her roots are really greasy today!

echokitten- I detangle her hair when she's in the bath when its soaked in conditioner and after again when I apply [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Knot-Today-p-207.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-knot-today-leaveindetangler]KCKT[/buylink], I use a wide tooth comb and do it really gently but I do tend to see hairs coming out, but I think thats normal??
I will try the SheaM as a leave-in could you use it as a rinse out?, I will also try the WDT as a leave in to see which works better:toothy7:
