Help for EXTREMELY dry hair

homegalhomegal Posts: 6Registered Users
Help!!! I am at my wits end. I did the BC in July of this year and again in October just to make sure I got rid of all of the relaxer in my hair. I have been doing CG for 3 maybe 4 months now and I do see some improvement in my hair.

However, I have very dry hair. I thought it was because of the winter and the dry air, but upon looking back at the past months, my hair is really dry.

When I con-poo my hair and put my products in my hair, it's fine. It's soft and shiny. As the day goes on, it starts to dry out. By the end of the day you can call me brillo.

Here are my products: I con-poo with Pantene relaxed and natural. I add for moisture Softsheen Care free curl (believe me I tried a lot of things including the cactus stuff). Then I add [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] which I love, but am wondering if this is what is drying my hair since it has aloe.

That's it. I hope someone can help me.

Thanks

I think this is the reason your hair is dry. This conditioner shouldn't be used as a conditioner rinse/wash. With CG, you use a conditioner that doesn't contain ingredients that can build up on the hair, since you aren't using shampoo to wash. The ingredients highlighted are very likely the reason for your dry hair.

    Ingredients
Water , Stearyl Alcohol , Cyclopentasiloxane , Cetyl Alcohol , Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine , Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil Jojoba , Cocos Nucifera Oil Coconut , Glutamic Acid , Dimethicone , Benzyl Alcohol , Fragrance , Panthenyl Ethyl Ether , EDTA , Panthenol , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone

Cyclopentasiloxane is one of the hardest to remove silicones. This cannot be removed without using shampoo. It can build up on the hair over time and cause it to become very dry and frizzy. This goes for the Dimethicone as well. When you are following CG(strictly) 'cones are a no-no, unless you wash atleast once a month. The Jojoba oil could also be drying your hair out. Some curlies here can use it with no problems, other experience frizz.

I think you need to ditch the conditioner and get a silicone free conditioner. Or one with soluble 'cones.

Secondly, do you use ANY leave in or do you just condtioner wash and then use styling product? If you don't, I highly recommend using a leave in. A good conditioner and leave in are vital during the colder months. It helps retain the moisture levels in your hair. I love Elucence as a leave in and regular condish(also for CO washes in between shampoos). There are a quite a few threads listing products good for CG in on the General Discussions board.

    Shygirl,

Thanks for the link. I am making my list and will be fighting the after-Christmas traffic within the hour.

Oh yeah, I am using a leave-in conditioner but it was also loaded with cones too. I thought that going back to natural hair would be easy. Boy was I wrong. It takes work.

    Thanks

    Shygirl,

Okay I went to the store and bought some of the items on the list. I came home, clarified my hair and then did a dt using olive oil (which worked great, btw). Next I conditioned with Suave naturals and my new leave-in is VO5. Next I used my [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]. I cannot believe the curls my head has. Would you believe that I actually saw my brown hair for the first time in months? I had no idea what the "cones" were doing to my hair.

You saved me, Shygirl. I am forever grateful.

    Thanks

light bulb goes off for me - jojoba oil can be drying! I have been adding this to my winter routine since I wanted extra moisture. My hair has been slowly drying out and becoming more cotton candy-like texture. So thanks shygirl, I'm going to eliminate the jojoba oil and see what happens. I figured all oils were okay - does anyone have a better oil to use? I also bought some shea butter, but I prefer the oils. Thanks

What about coconut oil, Morningstar? Or avocado oil? Just today, I mixed some shea butter and coconut oil(virgin and organic) and used as my styler, over my leave in. Gave me pretty good hold and gave me a more natural look. Sometimes my hair looks better w/o gel than it does with it.

Anyway, glad I could help you ladies out. :)

I really hope that Jojoba oil is not drying! It is one of my favorite oils (well, really, a wax ester), and it seems to really soften my curls.

Maybe there is a difference between using straight jojoba oil v. mixing it with other oils (and emollients, like butters)?

If it's working for you, then I wouldn't worry about it. You'll know if your hair hates it.

I've used it and didn't have any problems, but I prefer other oils to jojoba.

Ok, good. The Jessicurl oil blend of avocado, jojoba and coconut works wonders in my hair :) I also love to add jojoba to my Blended Beauty oil blend...........

i know this recommendation is pricey, but this oil actually is really good for dry hair - pomegrante seed oil! there are a lot of other pure oils (I prefer pure vs. someone's blend so that I know how much of what I am getting) that are great too! my favs are CURLS pure avocado and olive oil - out of my kitchen. i use them before i shampoo. i have been using olive oil this way for years, but have just recently started using avocado oil.

Okay ladies. It's evening where I am and my hair still looks moisturized. Yea!!! I am glad to finally find some products that work for me. It's an ever searching quest for that HG. Speaking of, tomorrow I will head to the healthfood store for shea butter. I can get it cheaper there.
