Not seeing threads as unread

NetGNetG Posts: 8,116Registered Users
I know many of us reported this back at the board change, but it's still a problem...

When you have to log back in, you lose the ability to see which threads are and aren't read. They all appear read. Totally discouraging when trying to actually keep up with the boards....

Wanted to get back to you.... we have an idea of how to fix this, and should be able to implement it mid-next-week.

Send me an email, please, by Friday of next week if it's still haywire.

    This is definitely still broken.

I just had my regularly scheduled forced logout, and now all threads show as read.

When I don't log out, threads may or may not show as read after I read them- and there's not a regular pattern I can tell on if they do or not.

Unfortunately, we've had to delay implementing the fix. I'm hoping for late this week or early next.

    I'm so sorry.

We can fix it now, since we're on the new servers, and I've asked Smart Guy to do so, but he hasn't gotten to it yet. I'll see if I can figure it out. Scary.

OK, I've made the change that should change the way threads are marked as read/unread.

Please let me know if you see a difference. This new method is more server intensive, so let me know if you see any speed issues, too.

Are others having this issue? I'd like to make everyone happy on this issue, but every time I make a change, it fixes it for some people and busts for others.

What browser are you using, DEL2C?

My problem is when I get logged out it messed up all the read/unread markings. Threads show up in the "new posts" search, yet are marked as read, and missing the little icon to get to the most recently updated posts. This only happens when I am force logged out, and not the rest of the time, though...

it happens to me on internet explorer and Google chrome whether I sign in or sign out doesn't matter. I find it hard to believe it's just me?? Maybe people just don't notice it or it doesn't bother them. It drives me CRAZY maybe there's nothing you can do :( I'll just have to live with it. It worked fine for a long time, this doesn't make any sense at all.. Something changed somewhere along the line....

When I click "new posts", it's only showing me no more than 10 threads even though I can go through individual forums and see a bunch of threads that are unread. It's been doing this all day.

It seems to be happening again. Tons of threads showing up in my User CP as unread but they've been read, some older ones too.

I don't think the "new posts" button is working either.

Used to be if I posted something, afterwards I could hit "new posts" to get the running list of currents posts up again. And always the thread I had commented on would be right up there, because it had a new post [mine].

    That doesn't happen anymore. Weird.

Maybe the database needs a goose? :dontknow:

We had this problem before, and it was fixed for a while.

The 500 posts showing up is happening again, too, even though there are only somewhere around 80 new posts since my last login yesterday. That keeps me from reading the boards on my phone, and makes me log in less often. It *was* fixed, so somewhere in the 5 weeks I've been away it was broken again.

Nope. I still get 500 posts, and still don't see my own posts unless someone else replies after me.

    Any fixes in sight?

    Bump.

Can we just go back to how it was prior to last August?

    (Kidding. Mostly.)

It seems like it's trying to keep track of what we have and haven't read, instead of what is new since our last login. And so even if it's a new thread, if we read it, it goes away on us once we open it, causing disappearing posts. Yet we still get 500 new posts and can't just start with new posts since last visit by going to the end of the list. If I didn't read it the 10 other times I saw a thread when I came to this site, chances are I don't need it pointed out to me yet again.
