How do I stop my hair from shrinking?

JEMJEM Posts: 57Registered Users
My hair is fairly long, straight but when I wear it curly it always shrinks waaaay up. Any tips/tricks to stop this? This is one of the main reason I don't like to wear my hair curly! tia!

Is shrinkage really a bad thing? Or is it mostly because your curl pattern varies so much?

I have about 50-70% shrinkage. The longest layers of my hair are almost bra-strap length(when straightened), but barely brush the top of my shoulder when dried naturally.

There really is no way to "stop" shrinkage. Your hair will pretty much do what it wants to do. :) But if you want more length to your curls, some ladies here put twists or braids in their hair when wet, and once dry, gently separate them in the morning. Another way to loosen your curls is to put your hair in a bun at night, and then in the morning, unravel it. If the curls are alittle flat, you can spritz it with water and scrunch in your gel or styling creme.

I'm sure some of the other curlies can offer more suggestions.

I think my hair shrinks the same as yours. Straight, my hair is about 3 inches above my bra strap. When curly my hair hits my shoulders. Thanks for the tips!

Any one else? Shrinkage is starting to bug me, for the first time. I've been growing it out, but its only getting longer when its wet :? . I really, really, want long hair, now that I've got the idea into my head. I've never had it.

I don't really think there is way to eliminate shrinkage either. But I do notice that I have more shrinkage in my hair when I use oils, like olive oil. Or even conditioners that contain lots of oils like aubrey organics create more shrinkage versus if I just use Suave Tropical Kiwi as a leave-in, which contains no oils. I think because i use gel on top of my leave-in that that creates shrinkage too... but that's ok because without the gel, I would have no hold, and my hair would be a mess!

Since this post, I started using the IC gel and it really helped w/ shrinkage and poofy-ness. I think using a thick gel is the key for my hair. hth!

    Is this the pineapple method?

I guess I have to get ready when I get my hair completely natural. It shrinks quite a bit(shrinks like a slinky) and I want to keep it a little long.

My hair shrinks too and I don't like it. It's very long almost down to my butt, but it shrinks to my neck. I don't understand it. I am new to the forum and I want help. I've been wearing it curly for years and it has grown a lot and I want the length to show. I want my hair to be a long wavy curl. Like the pictures below... Christina Milian is a singer and actress and I lover her hair! I read that she uses Redken Water Wax and other Redken products. I'm going to try a few soon. If those don't work, I have another method that I am thinking about.

Welcome to the site, beauty7. :)

WOW! Your hair is close to your behind and shrinks to your neck! That's some major shrinkage! I've never heard of shrinkage this severe.

Christina is naturally a 3b/c (more of a 3c curls wise) and she has a texturizer/relaxer in these pics(she's had one for awhile now, actually). There are natural ways to stretch out your curls(twists, banding, bantu knots) but it sounds like you may not want to do that. I've kinda accepted my shrinkage, but not everyone is the same in terms of dealing with shrinkage. The only other way to get your hair to look like that is if you texturize. I don't recommend it(because of there being to many things to worry about), but that's really the only way to get your hair like that.

I've never heard that Christina had a relaxer/texturizer. :? I thought her hair was naturally curly like this. Do you know her? I know her hair used to be black and she dyed it, but when it was black it was like this. She said she can get it straight very easily with a flat iron. I'm thinking about trying a few things that I recently learned about from this site and I'll see what happens. I'll keep everyone updated. Thank you!!! :D

I think they are just sections of hair you twist like a mini bun

That's not her natural hair(those pics were manipulated with curling irons). That pic is from the movie, "Love Don't Cost a Thing."

I wish I could find a pic of her from back in '99 when first came out. Her hair is closer to looking like Nesrine's or Spiderman5000's hair (fellow NCers)than the pic above.

This link shows what a bantu knot is.

    http://www.naani.com/index.html?lang=en-us&target=d73.html

After they dry, or after set, you take them out and separate the curls with your fingers. This will give you loose waves. It may not look exactly like Christina Milian's curls, but it will give you something similar.

Colocha.............You can do bantu knots on wet or dry hair. I know that Portae has some pics in her yahoo folder where she did a few bantu knots on dry/blow-dried hair and showed how it looked when taken out. It was very pretty.

Christina Millian has beautiful hair and is a beautiful young woman, but shows a bit too much cleavage for her age in some of those pictures!

But I can't figure out why she is on this particular thread since her curls (in any of the pictures, including the curliest one) don't seem to shrink much at all :?

I think Christina was mentioned because one of the posters stated that they wanted their hair to look like hers. Wanted the looser curl look, since their hair has shrinkage and wanted to know how to get it to look like hers.

Christina Milian is Cuban. I have seen pictures of her before and she has naturally curly hair about 3b, 3c. The reason I mentioned that she is Cuban is that alot of dark skinned Latina women have their hair 3b/3c and we wear it natural. Plus all she has to do is blow it out and it's straight without putting a relaxer. That's what I do.

I also understand what shrinkage is to a degree. When my hair is straight it is at my waist. When it's curly it's at my bra strap sometimes even higher. I think the best thing for that is to put a product in that weighs your hair down, like alot of leave in or even regular conditioner and alot of gel.

I stopped "scrunching" my hair when its drying. This helped my hair not shrink nearly as much!!!! The scrunching is just making it more curly and tightening the length/curls up.

This is my dd's biggest complaint about her curls. she really wants to wear her hair LONG more often. When wet (in the tub) it is down to her "patootie" as she calls it (hey she is only 6) when it dries it is above her shoulders! When you say you put it in a bun at night - is that on top of your head? Is your hair still wet? Thanks for the info!
