Any 2C girls using CK???

DEL2CDEL2C Posts: 6,418Registered Users
I recently ordered CK and hoping it will take away this FRIZZ. I want to go 2 days w/o washing it just takes too long to air dry and using the blowdryer makes it FRIZZ more so I do 1/2 and 1/2. My routine when washing is such an ordeal it seems ridiculous to plan my day around washing my hair!!! My hair is VERY thick, dry, coarse and hard to curl but it's WAY worse trying to straighten it I gave up on that 2yrs ago but still struggling with the CG routine. Right now I use [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-No-Poo-p-53.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacurl-nopoo]Deva No Poo[/buylink], Conditioner, B-Leave in, Recoil and Set it Free when it's dry. Any other advice??

I haven't had any luck with CK, and recently sent some to another member as a sample. Everyone seems to love it so I'm holding on to the remainder, but frankly, it hasn't done anything for my 2C curls. And I don't like the smell.

However, I don't have frizz, so it may not be the product for me. If I were you, I would start trying a far wider variety of products, since it sounds like Deva isn't helping you to manage what your hair does naturally. Lots of people (including me) like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Knot-Today-p-207.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-knot-today-leaveindetangler]KCKT[/buylink] and [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink], Jessicurl, AO, BRHG, and other products. I didn't have any luck with the CK either. I've gone back to it a couple of times just because everyone seems to like it so much but it did nothing for me. I tried FOTE AVG (Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel) today for the first time because it was highly recommended by other users and man I had a great hair day----probably the best ever!

Are you serious? Aloe Gel and that's it? That gives you enough hold even in the humidity?? Can I ask you as well, what your routine is, how often you no-poo what products & in what order you use them? Is your hair very thick?

I use Suave Tropical Coconut conditioner to CO wash and I use a pea size amount as a leave in. Then I raked the aloe vera gel throughout my hair and I added a little bit of Salon Selectives gel over the aloe vera gel. I raked it through, scrunched, and let it air dry. It dried slightly crunchy but was easily scrunched out. I couldn't believe that I had such a good hair day with only these 2 styling products (and they are pretty cheap which is my favorite part).

My hair is thick and tends to be on the drier side. Most styling products leave it looking frizzy and dull with no definition. Today it had a very healthy/moisturized looking shine
different than that fake product-looking shine that I usually get with most styling products. HTH

I have 2C/3A hair and I use CK practically every day (at least when it's this humid). My hair is fine and medium thickness, but it gets frizzy. The CK helps a lot.

I don't like the scent. It is too chemical-smelling for me, but the scent fades quickly and CK works so well, I don't care. CK doesn't have any hold though. You will still need to use a gel or something for hold. There are some people who use it alone, but they tend to be curlier than us 2s. :)

I just hate it when I think I've got a routine down and then it stops working!:angry6: I'm so sick of trying different products, I thought the CG method was supposed to alleviate all of this product obsession, but unfortunately Gel just stopped working all of a sudden and then the whole Deva Line has you using A LOT of stuff piled on top of each other and it's just too much GOO. Good Luck tomorrow! Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

Well I'm glad to hear that there is a 2 out there that this stuff works for! I didn't think that it would be enough hold. I was thinking of maybe trying the TWEEK for extra hold? It's getting RAVE reviews, we'll see if it keeps up. It's EXPENSIVE though!

I think there are quite a few 2s who use CK. This board just isn't as active as the general one. Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (BRHG) is available at Target, CVS, and Wal-Greens. It's a wonderful strong hold gel that works well with CK. It costs about $13 a tube.

CK works for me as well...it seems that I have thinner hair than you, but it works great on the frizz. It's more of a curl definer, not a curl enhancer...I can use it alone if it's humid out, but need a gel over it if it's not. Tweek is more of a curl refresher/fluffer/foofer, if that makes any sense. See if you can find CK on the swap board and try it out, otherwise Curlmart and CHS sell a smaller bottle for around $8. Good luck!

    Hi, DEL2C,

So I see that wavy/curlies have mixed responses to CK. I think it's an anti-frizz product, mainly.

AO stands for Aubrey Organics. A lot of members like this company's conditioners (sold at Whole Foods), particularly the Honeysuckle Rose. I tried a lavender shampoo and it smelled horrid! (And I love lavender.) So, while I have no personal raves for the AO brand, everyone else seems to.

My routine changes from day to day. I often forget how recently I've shampooed, but my best guess is that I do so about 3 or 4 times a week. One of those shampoos is a detox with Elucence. FrizzBeGone, another member (who is wonderful with very specific instructions and products, btw), recommended Elucense, and it does work very well as a gentle but thorough detox.

Right now, I'm trying the Denman brush routine, since I really need both better product distribution and clumping. This is a method wherein you actually brush a leave-in or product such as [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]Kinky Curly Curling Custard[/buylink] through your very wet hair. Some users brush twice; there are a variety of ways of using this method.

I'm not sure it would work for you because you describe your hair as being coarse, yet not very curly. When you do have curl, what does it look like? I'm wondering if reading the posts on the type "4" board would help you.

I know that Deva aims to be the be-all and end-all of curly hair method and products, but it just isn't. There are so many options it forgoes, such as plopping, pineappling, oil treatments --- all kinds of things that many members here swear by. As FrizzBeGone said to me, it's a good starting place, but.....it can't be all things to all curlies.

HTH --- feel free to pm me, too.

I use CK and a ton of it at that. My hair was very poufy pre-CK and the only way I could keep the pouf down was a lot of gel, a lot of conditioner left-in, or both.

It's pretty much the only product I use in the summer. I expect I'll be back to it and gel in the fall/winter.

Can I ask you something else? Do you spritz your hair with water on non wash days? With my current routine, if I add a drop of water that's it POOF and FRIZZ. If anything I have to use a bit of Set it Free and that seems to help but with CK you're supposed to wet it on non wash days right?? I was looking at your fotki and you get such definition it's beautiful! That's day2 hair? My hair will get more definition when I wash it and it's still damp, but once it's dry that's when the Frizz starts.

Yes I do spritz. I wait until about 10 min after I take out my pineapple when it's "settled" down a bit. I spritz and take a small amount of CK to smooth over the canopy. Depending on what day I'm on I may substitute gel (usually on Day 2 or 3). If there's straight or really frizzy pieces, I do the twirl thing shown on the Frizzoff.com website then re-scrunch. I do get a bit of frizz but not enough to make me want to go through the whole process of re-wetting and re-drying.

In my fotki, there's a folder of morning hair. I took it this morning about 5 min after taking out my pineapple. That's Day 5 hair so there is some frizz and I'll have to fix some curls as mentioned above. If I remember, I'll take and post an after pic later today.

For me, the CK is what gives the definition. In fact, my hair looks better from Day 2 on than it does Day 1. At least to me. ;) Before I started using it, I had the same issues you're describing.

Well, not exactly.... CG is gradually transforming me back to what I used to be years ago before Flat Irons and crappy products, etc.

I am fully CG - no poos no cones etc. As for the CK it HAS helped tremendously with frizz, but my curls themselves are coming back gradually as my hair gets healthier.

Hang in there and learn what works best for your hair. It took a few months and MANY products til I learned what does and doesnt work for my hair. But it is SO worth it.

Cut 2 inches between the first and last pics. I am growing out the tail end of a Japanese thermal reconditioning, thats why the ends are so straight. Between that and the Flat Iron the roots daily, my curls were no where to be seen! You should see them now - I havent update my Fotki in 2 months - I have much more of my organic curls and volume back When I was in my 20s I was a full on 3c. Time and babies have changed that... but when I started CG my hair was 2a/b with a few areas of C. Now I am a 3a with spots of 2c and 3b.

I ABSOLUTELY alter products according to weather conditions and what look I'm in the mood for. And I use the CK under ALL my products EXCEPT the KC ones. I mix and match from my list of HGs when I want to "play".

CK works great for me, and i'm a combo with plenty of 2C. I actually consider CK to have hold--I think it's like a watery gel. I tend to be pretty generous with it--about five quarter-sized amounts raked into five different sections of my head, and then scrunch, scrunch, scrunch. If my dry hair is too frizzy on the canopy, I also use CK on my palms--maybe a nickel-size--and run it over the outside of my hair. This can be a real miracle sometimes, though it's less consistent.

    HTH!

p.s. a column from last year by a 'curly on a budget' that you can find by searching the old articles was by a wavy who used CK alone also. she also had a lot of different product recs. a lot of us on these boards prefer other products to Deva, so feel free to experiment. Deva can be great, but i've found a lot of good ones once i started to experiment, and my hair is less frizzy as a result.
2b/3a, fine, "naturally frizzy", non-porous, above shoulders, brunette
Low-poos--faves are Deva and JC, experimenting with CJ Gentle Cleansing Shampoo
Conditioners: faves are Devacare One-C, Jessicurl Too Shea
    Leave Ins: Conflicted relationship--no fave
Fave stylers: Aveda Flax Seed & Aloe over Aveda Phmollient mousse, KCCC over anything, Biolage Firm Hold Gelee (HG for spring/summer), CK

Thanks kiniha! I also got a reply from another 2C who uses Astroglide:laughing7: on occasion since it's a similar consistency to CK!! I actually used this cuz my patience in waiting for the CK to show up is very thin and my FRIZZ is making me MENTAL. I also picked up the BRHG and I can see a difference already!

If you're able to get past what it is, KY Lotion is also supposed to be a good substitute (non-heating of course.) I bought the giantico bottle of CK so I won't have the need to even try it out for some time.

    Hi there whatsercurl & Rudee

I was curious when you use gel with the CK at what point do you put it in? Do you find that all that scrunching leads to frizz or no?

anyone else with suggestions on when is the best time to put Gel after applying CK please let me know! I've gottten the CK and have tried it a couple of times and I'm trying to decide whether the Gel helps or not? I definitely LOVE CK and can see a huge difference in Poof and Frizz. When I used the Gel I wasn't sure if I should wait, scrunch out some CK b4 Gel or use it right on top while sopping wet? I'm not 100% convinced I even need the gel during the Summer so I still have a lot more experiementing to do!

I always put my CK in in the shower. I do my thing, then turn off the water, geeeeeently squeeze a bit of water out so its not soaking but still dripping wet. I work thru a palmful or 2 of CK, brush or comb thru.

If I am using a curl creme I scrunch that in next, then plop, then scrunch in gel. Otherwise, I plop right after the CK, then scrunch in gel.

I hope you love the CK as much as I do!

Hmmm, what do I do with gel? I shower and then I squeeze most of the water out of my hair with my hands in the shower. It's still dripping down my back though because it's just so thick and I have a lot of it.

Anyway ~ I put in CK upside down and then right side up and I comb it through and then scrunch, scrunch, scrunch it. Then I put in the gel. So I guess my hair is at the wet, but not sopping stage? After I put the gel in then I squeeze any extra moisture out with the Curlese and then air dry.
