How bad is amodimethicone??

My hair reacts okay to it. I know it's a cone, but is it TERRIBLE? Like if you use it will your hair suffer a lot? Thanks. :)

it is not a horrible cone. it is actually one of them that can be removed with coco-betaine (sp) that is the ingredient in jessicurls version of the no/low poo ([buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Hair-Cleansing-Cream-p-103.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-hair-cleansing-cream]hair cleansing cream[/buylink]) i believe dimethicone can too
some people are totally fine with it

i experimented with it lately and my hair DID not like it.
but if your hair is fine with it and you low/no poo you should have no problems with build up.

hopefully a mod CGer will jump in with more info

As far as cones go, it is pretty low key. But it does seem to be a YMMV type of cone. It's worth a shot of experimenting.

Your shampoo should get it out if it has the coco-betaine in it.

    Supposedly amodimethicone doesn't build up.

It's in a leave-in I've been using. I low poo twice a week and have had no trouble with buildup.

i have been getting some terrible knots at the back of my head/neck recently and i got some detangling spray( just to deal with the back bit) and it has been fine so far. it seems to be able to wash out just by co-washing alone, mind you, i AM only using a small amount at the nape.

I use a styler with amodimethicone in it every day, and really don't have any problems with it. :) I low-poo once every 5 to 7 days, and it washes right out. Even when I co-wash, my hair never feels coated or weighed down by the 'cone. Amodimethicone, especially paired with certain ingredients (which I forgot; I think Curly Chemist has an article about it!), isn't too prone to build up.

I have been strictly cone free since beginning CG about 8 months ago. I have had mixed results and have tried lots of different products and techniques. I have learnt so much from this site and have really enjoyed reading and educating myself about curly hair! :toothy8:

Recently I began looking into cones and decided to try the a cone as it seemed pretty harmless. I found this:

"Amodimethicone and other similarly modified silicone polymers are considered to be among the best high-performance conditioning polymers currently available to the hair-care product formulator. They provide many unique benefits, including the following:

    Provide deep conditioning
Provide targeted conditioning to areas of particularly damaged hair
    Protect from thermal damage
    Increase color retention
    Resist build up
    Impart gloss and shine

These modified silicones seem to be of particular benefit for those of us with damaged hair, permanently colored hair or those concerned about the buildup of conditioning agents. It would be necessary to use a shampoo containing one of the lauryl or laureth sulfates or cocamidopropyl betaine to completely remove this silicone from the hair, which may be of concern to those who prefer to use only conditioner-cleansing methods."

So I decided to try the KPac intense hydrator treatment after low pooing with JC cream cleanser. I use a pea sized amount of leave in then styled using JCRR and JCCC. And I had the best hair ever - curls galore, no frizz.

Given that the KPac contains amodimethicone and I only want to low poo my hair once a week if that, when I condish wash on other days, the amodimethicone remains on the hair. Is this such a bad thing given that this cone apparently does not build up? Why does the above quote assume that the amodimethicone needs to be washed off the hair? Are conditioners able to penetrate the hairshaft when coated with amodimethicone? I don't want to wreck my hair and low poo more than once a week.

Sorry about the long post but I am confused!

I use a conditioner with bisaminopropyl dimethicone, which has similar properties to amodimethicone. Even though I only shampoo as necessary, I have no issues with build-up whatsoever, and protein and moisture still penetrate the hair shaft! It probably depends on the person, but that's my experience, at least! :blob5:
