Nail polish, in the fridge?

Does it really keep from separating when stored in the fridge & make it last longer?

I'd think it'd be too thick to brush on. :?

I agree that the refrigerator would make polish too hard and thick. I keep mine in a cool spot (but room temperature), and out of sunlight.

Tip: Wipe any polish off the neck of the bottle before storing. Apparently if it hardens it lets air in, and the polish dries out faster. After I started cleaning off the bottle neck, the polish does seem to last longer. :)

See, I had read this in a magazine & it was the first time I heard of doing this. I don't see salons & stores keeping them in refrigerators. So I guess they just pulled that out of their ass.

I heard to do it for colognes & perfumes, but I don't think it was to make them last longer, that it was for a nice cool down spritz on a hot summer day, but I could be mistaken.

I also read to replace them when they start separating, but I've seen them doing that on store shelves & in salons. I'm sure these places don't toss their polishes all the time when they start doing that. It'd be awfully expensive to replace all those Essie & OPIs all the time!

Why can't you keep nail polishes as long as you keep furniture & appliance paints, etc., & just shake, roll or stir them up too?

Nail polish is made differently than those house paints (my dad worked for chemical companies that made both nail polish and house paints; house paints require a lot of different extra ingredients).

You don't need to keep polish in the fridge; it's just a myth. Wiping the polish off the sides does help, as alacurl said, but the cooler temperatures doesn't cause the polish to thicken. Air will cause it to thicken, so to extend the life of your polish, you can buy two at once and use the second bottle to refill the first. I think that's going too far, though.

I've had polishes from 5 years ago. If they start separating, I just roll them between my hands. As long as they don't go gluey, there's no need to replace them.

Well, in fairness, stores and salons typically go through a bottle of polish a LOT faster than an individual does.

But I agree, I think the fridge thing is irrelevant. Some of my favorites I've had for a few years and they're fine. And I rarely polish.

I also have a bunch of polish and I don't keep it in the fridge. No problems with mine either.

    AS,

I figured most paints, etc., were different. But isn't plastic model paint the closest?

    M,

I've seen some polishes in stores & salons that are dusty & separated. :dontknow:

Certainly, but on average I'm sure they still go through them faster than an individual does. Doesn't mean nothing ever separates.

i've kept mine in the fridge for YEARS (probably because i read about it in a magazine). i NEVER have to buy new polish...i only buy if i want a new color for me it has helped mine last forever....seriously. but then my house gets warmer during the day since i turn my air up when i am not home...so for me them always staying cool probably has helped....but i'm sort of obsessive about keeping lots of things cool (i store lemons, bread, certain conditioners, etc in the fridge all the time)....
