Makeup Primer

Can someone explain to me how to use makeup primer? Do you put it on before or after concealer? I have a sample bottle of some primer that I experimented with this morning and I like what it did for my skin (so much so that it wasn't necessary to put foundation on), but I wasn't sure how to put concealer on. I did it afterwards. Does it matter? Makeup primer is a new thing to me.

I don't use concealer, but I would think you put primer on before it.

What primer do you use? I'm still look for one that does what I want it to do (hide my pores a little and make my make-up last longer).

I don't use primer, but I should think you put the primer on before it. My routine is moisturiser -> sunscreen -> primer -> foundation ->

I'm still looking for a primer that really does what I want though.

Primer would go after any skin treatments (moisturizers, things like that) but before any kind of makeup, including concealor.

What kind of primer are you using? Powder, mineral, liquid, etc?

Primer goes on before concealor. Some say that foundation goes on before concealor also, although many use it after.

What was the primer you were testing out?

I got the Luminizing Face Primer from the Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Carmindy line. I know some of you don't like Sally Hansen but the primer looked interesting and I like some of the other stuff from that line (mostly the lip glosses). It got mixed reviews on makeupalley but my CVS was running a sale and I got it at half price so I figured it might be worth trying. I think originally I called it a sample bottle but it is the full size bottle. I guess my mind connected paying less for it as being a sample :laughing7:

Anyway, so far I am impressed. My skin looks smoother and not as red. I don't know what that would have to do with reducing redness but it is definitely less than usual. The nice thing to me is that I feel like I have a little more coverage but still look like I'm wearing nothing, if that makes sense. This stuff really has no color so it isn't like it's really covering anything up but I am getting the fresh faced, smooth look of good skin. The next big thing is that I just need to invest in a better concealer. I haven't gotten around to doing that yet (although I have a couple recommendations for some good ones) and I just need a better one to cover some pimples and I usually put a little under my eyes. I don't really have dark circles but with being so pale, if I don't put a little I look really washed out.

I really like Carmindy herself and her m/u philosophy on WNTW. I've tried a few of her products and really like them. I'm interested in the face primer as well. Did it help w/ oiliness in the T-zone thru the day?

Added bonus - her products are not tested on animals =)

I still get oily on my nose. That is actually the only place I do get oily. Everything else stays pretty dry. It doesn't really control the oiliness on my nose but then nothing I have tried does so usually half way through the day, I need to blot my nose. However I have never really concentrated on getting rid of that because I am usually focused on the rest of my dry skin and the flakies I get. That is more annoying to me.

Anyhoo...I still like it. I stopped using it for awhile while I was playing with other things but I am back using it again. I am currently waiting on Avon MagiX Face Perfector. That is next on my list to try (it's a primer too) and that is supposed to help keep a matte look although that isn't really what intrigued me. I am have gotten so fed up with foundation that I have given up wearing it all together but I can't quite go completely naked so the primer is a nice trade off. It will be in next week.

I use the Smashbox Primer. I can't comment on other brands, because this is the only one I've used ... but this one works really well. I even use it under my mineral foundation. It helps the makeup last longer, makes it look smoother - it provides the perfect 'canvas' to apply your makeup.

Although the primer has some good ingredients, it also contains parabens ... Does anyone know of any natural primers that work well?

I use primer after my moisturizer (which has sunscreen) then I put on my concealer and then foundation. I use Rimmel's primer, it's thicker almost like a foundation, but my makeup doesn't budge. I've used Smashbox's photo finish, and it works great too. It may sound weird, but Monistat anti-chafing gel (like $5 at walmart) is basically EXACTLY like smashbox for wayyyyy cheaper.

Another great thing to use is eye primer...I use Too Faced Shadow Insurance, and my eye makeup doesn't fade and doesn't crease...it's amazing!!!

I checked out the website, but had difficulty finding the ingredients. Are they all natural, or do they just combine natural ingredients with ones that aren't?

    TIA !!

Not RCW ... but I know silicones give some people breakouts.

Along with my foundation samples, I ordered the primer from Meow cosmetics (mineral makeup). It works REALLY well.

My skin doesn't get shiny and the makeup lasts all day. I apply the primer first (after moisturizer). Because the primer is a powder, I make sure my moisturizer has soaked in really well. The Meow primer gives you the perfect canvas to apply your makeup.

I have a very mild case of Rosacea, so I always have some redness on my cheeks. After the primer, I use the yellow toned foundation on the red spots. I use this instead of concealer; it tones the red down immediately.

I then apply my foundation. The Meow cosmetics are by far the best makeup I've ever tried; it is a huge bonus that they are all natural.

My favourite primer at present is Monostat anti chafing cream. It has the same ingredients as most primers and is way cheaper. I just got some and have been trying it on half my face and my other fave (Laura Mercier) on the other half. The monostat side is way less oily! And no scent at all (not to mention saving $$$)

Just an update. I am still using the Monostat anti chafing as my primer. I am on my first tube still (been using it since Oct.). I love it. No smell. Very light Don't feel like I am adding a layer to my makeup. Very good oil control. Very good primer. Someone on another board gave me a heads up about this product and for me they were right!
