favorite NYC colorist?--dark brunette hair

Sorry if this is a huge repeat, I searched and couldn't come up with this!

I have very pale skin and almost black hair and am flirting with the idea of coloring it. I LOVE the way color can make curls stand out more clearly. Last time I got highlights (the only time I got highlights) I felt they were too light--a reddish and "dark blonde" according to my colorist. They weren't bad--they were thin--but I thought they were sort of obviously stripey. I was wondering if balayage would turn up something different.

Suggestions for colorist or techniques? TIA!
