What's your favorite leave-in?

susususu Registered Users Posts: 767 Curl Connoisseur
I'm trying to kick the habit of just leaving regular conditioner in my hair (i.e., not rinsing it out), and instead invest in a good leave-in conditioner. Based on the posts I've read, I'm considering products from some of the following lines:

Mixed Chicks
Oyin
Qhemet Biologics

If you've used leave-ins from these lines, what was the name of the product and what kind of results did you get? What other leave-ins have you used/loved? (I'm by no means set on trying something from one of the lines listed above - those are just a few that spring to mind - so please share all your faves. )

Oh, and I've looked for the Jamaican Mango Lime Cactus leave-in, but no luck so far...

Thanks!

I haven't yet tried the three that you listed. I ordered the qhemet sampler but broke down and gave it to my sister. I would strongly recommend that you keep looking for the cactus leave in because it's that good and it's cheap it runs about 3.99 for 8 ounces. It's a leave in the strictest sense by that I mean tons of moisture but not that much hold. I have extremely thick hair and this is truly the best leave in that I've come across to date. I got mine at the local beauty supply store. I even asked them to order it for me I told them that it was extremely popular, and they ordered the entire line.
I've had the opportunity to feel the qhemet products and I think that they would be wonderful for twists and wash and gos but it feels a little greasy to me to be considered for a leave in but I haven't yet tried it so I can't say for sure.

the thickness of your hair is very similar to mine, and think the cactus leave in would work beautifully for you :)

Doc - Thanks for the rec (and the compliment)! You've convinced me to search a little harder for this product. I live in NY, so there have to be some stores that carry it. One of the beauty supply stores had some of the other products in the Jamaican line (not the cactus leave-in) - maybe I'll go back and see if they can order it. Thanks!

One more thing: do you happen to know if the cactus leave-in works ok with IC Fantasia Gel and/or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KC Curling Custard[/buylink]? I usually layer those products over my conditioner.

    Yes, they work well together.

I have a whole thread talking about this. :) They work perfectly together(the IC w/ the leave in). I haven't tried it with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]. But considering the texture/consistency of both products, they may work better together than the IC gel. I'll have to try that.

What do you mean? Are you looking for a leave in to define your curls, or are you looking for one that provides moisture, has good slip, etc.

If it's for defining your curls, you'll do better finding a good conditioner that helps keep your hair moisturized than finding one for defining your curls. I think with better hair health, comes healthier looking curls. A good conditioner/leave in is really important, especially during the colder months.

Good topic. Because I am always on the search.

Right now my faves are Qhemet's Olive Cream Instant Detangler and [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Mixed-Chicks-Leave-in-Conditioner-p-279.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=mixed-chicks-leavein-conditioner]Mixed Chicks Leave in[/buylink].

I have tried the Mango and Lime but I didnt love it. I loved the smell but it didnt work. I didnt like the way my hair felt once it dried.

    Thanks for the recs!

Shygirl: I remember reading your (very detailed!) cactus leave-in thread a while back - I'll have to check it out again. Hopefully I can track down this product (esp since it's so cheap)!

Blaqpearl: I'm pretty sure I got the idea of trying Mixed Chicks (and possibly Qhemet) from one of your posts. How would you compare the two products? The Qhemet line seems to get a lot of raves, so I'm considering ordering their sampler pack.

    :)

I'll be back in this thread in three months--I currently use the cactus leave-in, flaxseed gel (gotta make more of this) and the IC ( I no longer have a moisture problem unless I don't CW my hair at least once weekly).

I like the combo, but I really want to try the Oyin, Qhemet, Asha, Honeychild's of the world (the Mixed Chicks moniker leaves this non-mixed chick cold, so that's out, although the name Blended Beauty is much better to me--anyhoo). I'm waiting until I BC to go down that path though.

the Mixed Chicks moniker leaves this non-mixed chick cold,

Yeah, I know what you mean - I feel a bit weird about purchasing it too.

I just looked at the Qhemet site, and think I"m going to purchase their sample pack. All of the stuff in it looks pretty good (and seems to be geared twd kinkier hair types). I might also order a full size leave-in (since I'll probably go through the samples pretty quickly), but I'm torn btw the Olive & Honey Hydrating Balm, the Olive Cream Conditioning Instant Detangler & the Amla and Olive Heavy Cream. On the website they suggest using the Heavy Cream in combination with one of the other two leave-ins if you have extremely dry, coarse hair, but I'll prob just start out with one...

Cheleigh - I've been meaning to try flaxseed gel (and shealoe) for a while too. Does it provide hold as well as moisture?

The flaxseed gel provides "light" hold and no crunchy hair at all. I just realized that I've never used it alone and then tied a scarf to set, and that might make it hold a bit firmer (I'll try it after I make a new batch).

I sometimes just pair it with the cactus and go like that. The difference between using the flaxseed w/o the IC or with (for me) is that I have less definition with the flax alone. Depending on my mood and hair style, less definition is preferable to me.

I prefer Qhemet over the Mixed Chicks. My hair was moisturized for days after. They are similar creaminess which I love. But I ordered Olive Cream over Mixed Chicks the other day. So Olive Cream won the bottle.

I also prefer Qhemet for the quality it has. Much more healthier for my hair.

I just tried a couple of Blended beauty products. I tried the leave in and the defining lotion. Not impressed initially. I think I didnt use enough product. I am going to try adding some [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] or Qhemet HoneyBush tea gel.

my Bss had no more Cactus Leave-in left. Although I like it, I think I like creamy leave-ins better.... so if you like creamy leave-ins, so far I'm loving [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/AG-Fast-Food-p-27.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=ag-hair-cosmetics-fast-food]AG fast food[/buylink], or Redken Smoothe Down Butter Treat is scrumptious, too. I am back on the abba nourishing bandwagon! It is great for moisture, strength, and detangling. I realize that I was using it wrong before. For me, it is only meant for use on freshly washed hair - -no other time :duh:

I like MOP. I just purchased Suave humectant to try as CO and leave in too.

Candy: I love the way you wrote about how the leaveins work 4 u, but what is your hair like? There are many different textures for 4As.

I'm using the Cactus leave in and love its moisture benefits. :couple:couple.gif.
However, i do like creams (sometimes use Redken SD Butter Treat). So I'm very interested in what you godesses have to say about buttery/creamy leaveins. :grouphug:grouphug.gif

Hi no butterfly. I dont have a hairalbum but my hair is exactly like this lady: http://public.fotki.com/chariseraynee/year_4/year_3/fluffy.html

And I love buttery/ creamy leave ins more then watery leave ins. My hair likes creams better. Watery leave in are too light for my hair.
