mom doesn't like CG

hey everybody
after reading curlygirl a few weeks ago,I decided to stop shampooing. My hair already feels healthier and looks better than it did when I was shampooing everyday! My only problem is my mom is convinced that it's gross to never wash your hair. She's stick straight, of course. Is anyone else on the CG routine having issues like this? They just don't get it!

Ehh...my mom doesn't like it either. She thinks it's pretty gross. But I'm just like, "Er, I wash my hair twice a week", even though it's more like twice a month. And my sisters use shampoo so she can't tell that I'm not.

thanks for your help. I just don't think anyone with straight hair can understand how hard it is to deal with curls! I'm ashamed to say that I may "fall off the wagon" after only a week and a half, though! Today I got up and even after styling my hair it was greasy looking and dull! Is that normal? I really want to do CG, it's just I don't want to look like a slob!

Okay, okay...What are you using to style your hair? What conditioners are you using? What shampoo? We can solve this problem!

It took me a few months to feel like I'd really gotten the hang of things. I've been on CG for about 2 years now, just give it a little time and see what happens.

    Okay, I promise I didn't shampoo!

I'm using Paul Mitchell Extra-Body daily rinse conditioner and Suave volumizing gel. I diffuse every day and I've already used the CG sugar scrub a few times.

You know the ad for Yanai Van on the left side of this website? My hair looks just like that model's. :(

Well you know what? CG isn't for everyone. If you feel like your hair is looking like crap, then stop. Of course, if your hair is *worse* when you 'poo, then that's another problem. But a lot of people don't CG, because it doesn't work for them. So don't feel like you *have* to CG.

My Mom is also a straightie. It took her a long time to accept that my hair is radically different from hers. Now that I'm in college I don't have to deal with it so much but I remember well. In the intrests of family peace, you might try telling her that youre shampooing, just not as much, and squeeze a little out of the bottle when you shower if she notices.

Actually though, you might be better off if this werent a lie, and you really do shampoo a bit. Whenever your hair feels greasy, use a little shampoo, maybe a glob the size of a quarter. Start with the roots and work the lather out from there. I'd recommend getting a moisturizing shampoo. Be sure to rinse it ALL out and condition after.

And youve probly realized this already, but I wouldnt go telling everyone you know that you've stopped shampooing, if you decide to stick CG.
light brown, 3B at the crown, with 3A underneath. Beyond baby-fine and cut in a layered bob, which I am trying to grow out.

No matter how hard you try to hide them, your inner curls will always come out. Why not make them look good?

my mom has stick straight hair too. so she would understand, i asked her to read a few pages out of my "curly girl" book (by lorraine massey) where it explains how curly hair is different than straight hair, how shampoo is too harsh for curls, and how your hair can get clean by just using conditioner.

if your mom is still displeased, you could try using [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-No-Poo-p-53.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacurl-nopoo]devacurl no-poo[/buylink], which is really a "washing conditioner." you could pass it off as a "gentle shampoo," which it kind of is, in principle.

okay, my mom and I have finally made a compromise!!!
I'm using this "cleansing conditioner" now, which seems to me just like plain conditioner, but she thinks it's shampoo and I know it's not!! it's called Wen Sweet Almond Mint and I love it! I'm also using rusk styling cream (it's got cones) which u should all try 'cause it's working really well! I guess I'm considered "modified CG" now. :D

Same problem- that's what my mom says. I'm gonna try non-cg for one week and see if i like that better.

my mom doesn't know either. when i got my haircut, (a few days ago) i was like that lady did okay for a straightie who knows nothing about curly hair, and my mom was like it doesn't matter if your hair's straight or curly they cut it the same way. I was like... no mom. of course, she brushes her hair wet and blow dries it.

Okay id love to try not shampooing ( can you list the benefits, does it help with dryness and frizzness) BUT i got coloured treated hair and its a shampoo one and i find it works wonder in terms of keeping my hair colour....

wat u do is buy shampoo, but only use enough to cover about half a penny.if money isnt an issue, everytime you shower pour a bit down the drain.the shampoo will slowly disapear, and then just never tell your mom youve run out.

or just dont buy shampoo and hope she doesnt notice.

i guess ive got to use my own advice! i started reading CG yesterday, and when i got to no-poo section i read it out loud and she got a funny face and said, wats the point of that? of course, she gets her hair done at a salon, and her hair looks poufy but is really thin and dieing. like she knows how to take care of hair.

*note to self-dont tell mom when i run out of shampoo*

Yeah, I understand. My mom flipped when I tried it. IT didn't work well for me because I have the adult version of cradle cap so I use just a tiny bit of Johnson;s baby shampoo to get rid of that crud and lots of conditioner. ANd just remember it is YOUR hair not hers. Do what is right for you.

My mom was grossed out when she learned that I'd gone CG: "Are you SURE you want to be doing that?!?! NO shampoo?!?!" She is stick straight but she'd always told me how lucky I was to have curly hair and I was already 3 weeks into a routine before she found out. And now whenever someone who has curly hair asks me what I do, she starts telling them and says "You should try it!!" lol!!

What is it with mum's not liking what we do to our hair and it makes it better! My mum thinks I'm going to ruin my hair by putting honey on it in a co wash and washing it out, she even stopped buying it for me until she noticed that my hair was curlier when I used honey!

I just popped into this thread out of sheer curiousity, and just wanted all of you young CGs out there to remind your moms that they did AND still do some pretty gross things to their hair and bodies for that sake of vanity NO? How many of your moms get botox or skin peels(gross)? And if any of your moms are any where near their 50s they probably used use juice cans to roll their hair, and hippy moms usually didn't shave anything(legs or pits) and used mayonnaise to DT their hair or used a clothes iron to straighten their hair.
Plus, and here's the kicker, your moms are still trying to hold onto the last shred of your kid-ness so even if you have to fib a little, cut them a little slack. You know it won't be long before you are in college and griping about your "dirty" hair will be the last thing she's thinking of... what with all of the tuition and books she will be happy that you are saving a little money by not shampooing. Just don't tell her about how much extra all the other products cost LOL...
