People have tv screens in the FRONT seat?
Have they always had them in the front??

I thought that was illegal...Where did you see that?

ETA: If that's not illegal, it should be! As of Tuesday we are not allowed to talk on our phones while driving, wouldn't watching TV be worse? That's a scary thought!

I *think* the screen hanging over in the driver's cabin is meant for the second row, and the screen in the dash is GPS.

Ooo good call, I think you're right. It does look like that front screen is closer to the middle row rather than in front of the driver. I guess I didn't pay enough attention!

Oh.... so the pic is just a little off. It totally looks like that one screen is like right in front of the driver, doesn't it? holy crap! I was really starting to freak out over this.

I know there are a lot of folks who love this whole "tv in the car" thing... but I HATE it.

HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!!!!!!!

I HATE driving behind one of them at night.
and I hate the fact that kids can't freakin' just SIT AND THINK or play car games. It makes me sad.
Because being kinda bored sitting in the car, trying to figure out how to entertain yourself is part of being a kid. :(

Ah yes. My brothers entertained themselves by telling my that they were aliens. They had this whole bit.

M: What number am I thinking of?
H: Four (it was ALWAYS four)
    M: How did you know?

In creepy voices, too. I was so scared.

But later, when I wasn't so gullible, we played a ton of fun car games. What's the huge appeal of the idiot box? There's no human interaction, no silly games, no getting scared out of your wits. :sad8:

Anyway, I was totally freaked by that picture. But it does look like a video game way up front, and the kid is holding a controller, so I guess it's not too bad.

Except they could totally be playing 'My Aunt Sally went shopping and she brought me an apple, banana, carrot, d-something that's food realted'.

No one would even need a TV in our car on vacation.
A family of five drove 15 hours without once turning on the radio.
It helps that my brother was asleep and that my sister and I hadn't slept and were incredibly out of it.
Apparently we were very entertaining. Quite a few renditions of "Peanut Butter Jelly Time".

Next time you have to make a two hour drive with a sick two year old who has no one else to entertain her, feel free to get back to me on this "I hate tv in the car" thing.

sorry.. I'll still hate it. The majority of people are not driving around with their little built in tv's because they're driving around for hours with a sick 2 year old.

I am fortunate to have a child that has always been good in the car. CGNYC was the one who informed me that not all kids are quiet or automatically fall asleep in the car. I dislike how much we rely on TV/DVD's however I don't see the harm in having a DVD player set up for the times when it comes in handy.

I am very grateful my kids didn't inherit my tendancy to get carsick. Our cabin is 4+ hours away, and if they didn't have their "car boxes" (full of paper, workbooks, pencils and crayons), I think they'd drive me crazy. Just the thought of coloring in the car makes me queasy.

We always get books on tape now. It really helps to pass the time.

I had my nephew (12 years old at the time) in the car with me once and we pulled up behind another car at a red light. The dvd player in the back seat of the car was playing porn. Hardcore, raunchy porn. And no one was in the car but the driver. Talk about uncomfortable!

Ugh, I hated that about car trips when I was a kid! I couldn't read or do anything without getting sick. I usually had to crack the back window even in the winter to get some fresh air.

Now I have to either drive or sit in the front passengers seat to avoid the yuckiness.

I don't know, it seems like having a DVD player for backup wouldn't be a horrible idea... remembering how my brother and I would just punch the daylights out of each other instead of being constructive.

DVD players/TV screens where the driver can watch, though, is BAD VERY BAD.

It's cool how you know what everyone else is doing in the car. And how fun it is to drive around a little one strapped in a carseat all alone in the back seat.

Those of you fondly remembering those long fun drives with Mom and Dad and nothing but your wits and the open road to entertain you probably DO NOT remember what it was like to be a screaming, car-seat-fighting two year old. Most of you probably didn't have to ride in carseats past the time you could sit up, if at all, and certainly not till you were what? Six? Kids are stuck strapped into car seats FOREVER. And you certainly don't know how obnoxious it was from the parent's side.

But it's always fun to feel superior over silly things.

My sister's Lexus has a dvd player in it. If I have to take my 2 year old nephew somewhere, guess which vehicle I want to use? He's not too bad if someone is sitting RIGHT next to him entertaining him. But if there's no one but him and the driver? Thank god for dvd's!

It just seems an odd thing to get all huffy about about when you're not in the car or driving around a kid. What's "sad" about all the kids trapped in car seats who have something to entertain them? How is it all that different from taking a book?

I'm totally with you on this one. I think it's so sad that some people always have to have their kids plugged into something. They grow up thinking they always need something to entertain them instead of being creative or just sitting & daydreaming.

Yeah, I don't think sticking a kid in front of a tv all the time is the way to go. Even if the child does misbehave, I feel that they're being raised to rely too much on technology these days.

Well, really I'd love a dvd player in our van, because we go on 1 hour or longer trips a lot, and I feel very sick when I read in a moving vehicle, and I feel sick when I listen to music with earbuds, I think it's just how the earbuds are in my ears, so I get very bored. But I don't think it's a good idea to have a dvd player where a driver can see it, and they shouldn't be able to hear it either.

I think there's a big difference between parking a kid in front of a tv all day and letting them watch a dvd in the car so they don't scream and you can concentrate on driving.

My daughter never had the portable dvd player, but she's a puker - so she's always slept in the vehicle - even if it's 20 minutes (still does).
My bonus daughter - different story. I'll go ahead and say it - she's a pain in the a$$ in a vehicle. She don't shut up. Yeah, yeah, yeah - family time, blah blah blah! Sometimes ya need a break on a long trip!
We don't use it on a regular basis - but if we are traveling out of town - oh yeah!!
