Flax seed Gel

SapphireMoonSapphireMoon Posts: 123Registered Users
Is anyone else completely unable to strain it? The gel wont go through the strainer.. it wants to stay by the seeds

It's usually hard to strain. If it's impossible, water it down a little.

I have tried making my own flax gel a few times. Through trial and error (and a lot of mess) I discovered two ways to overcome this prob. I have had success with either putting the seed in an old peice of pantihose and boiling it (this is the least messy option). Otherwise you can boil it until it starts to get thick, strain and return the strained gel to the stovetop until it reaches your desired thickness. Hope this helps! Good luck!

If you want to start "fresh," you can also buy muslin tea bags at the health food store.

I just made 3 versions of this-the first two came out as nice spray gels, but I didn't want a spray gel. I had the seeds in pantihose. The last one I boiled and boiled loose seeds, came out waaay thick, which I wanted, but forget about straining. I kept pressing the whole thing through the hose and squeezed the mess through. It was so very worth the extra boiling and extra seeds. This is the best stuff ever, but I don't know if I want to go through that process again, so tweaking is necessary. I added small amounts of oils and aloe, so it is moisturizing but is surprisingly strong-hold, too. I used citrus in the spray gel, and that works nice as a finishing spray. Such fun!

My first experience making this was very similar. I kept trying and trying to get those seeds out--and have a thick gel. I used strainers, gold coffee filter, cheese clothe, you name it--I tried it. It's a very frustrating experience. I bought the cold pressed oil, but later read that it's just not the same thing! If you want it, that's the only way.

After making up a batch do you whip it with a hand beater to break up the (snot like slimy) threads? Okay sorry it is more like egg white before beating them. Would that wreck the structure of it? Or do you find it doesn't thread later? Or you just goop the stuff on as is?

I remember mixing it in a all-in-one but I beat all the ingredients together.

The way I learned to make it was to boil it exactly 10 minutes using a timer. And to strain immediately without waiting a second extra. The strainer should have big holes or loose weave.

Another way is to get a strainer that sits in the water as it boils. You need a really small pot and strainer just the right size for the amount of water so the seeds are immersed.

Seems to me I have read that you can soak the seeds over night, strain and the boil the strained water. I would have to go hunt for that recipe. I might be totally off base.

I haven't beat it. When I put it in the muslin tea bag, the gel doesn't get anywhere near as thick. If I'm using it as the base for a product, it's fine.

I've been making flaxseed gel for a couple of years now. I've found the best method seems to be straining the gel through a fish net, the type you buy from a pet shop.

I put a small amount of cooled gel into the end of the net, twist the net round several times (to firmly secure the gel in the end) then really work/push/squeeze it through, out of the end of the net into a bowl. Always a really messy process but I do get get good thick gel with no seeds in it. HTH!

I was reading a blog site just yesterday about this. You need to strain it while it's still hot. I couldn't find seeds, so I got a jar of the powder at Wal-Mart. Talk about a mess, but the results are well worth it.
Hair type: Currently 2c/3amii. Modified CG since 05/25/2008. Length is roughly 2" past my collar bone.
'Poo: Dr. Bronner's lemon 'poo bar once a week.
Co-Wash: Suave Naturals coconut condish. Freeman SeaKelp Moisturizing Condish.
Styling: Flax seed gel, Tresemme Bouncy Curls, Hask Spray-It Curly, Tresemme Curl Locking Spray.
Towel: Fake chamois from the auto dept. Gets out so much water that my hair is starting to spiral instead of water weight pulling them all out into waves.

That's what I've found. It needs to be hot as you strain it. I definitely think I take the cake for funny Flax Seed Gel stories though. The first time I made it, I did all of the directions fine, but it wasn't getting to the consistency that I wanted. So I cooked it and cooked it and finally took it off of the stove. I was able to strain about 2 teaspoons, and when what I did get cooled down, I seriously was reminded of snot. It was a slightly yellow color, clumped like snot, and was impossible to use. Thankfully I didn't give up and made another batch and from that point fell in love.

The herbwife blog said you can use it as a personal lubricant too. :laughing7:

I found a metal mesh coffee filter at St. Vinnie's today. I'm thinking it's going to work really well. I put it in a pump soap dispenser, so hopefully it won't slide off my hand like when it comes out of a squeeze bottle in a big slimy glob.

    1 cup water

    2 tbsp flax seeds

Bring water and flax seeds to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes. Strain and keep it in the fridge for up to a week. :toothy7:Some people add other things, EO, Aloe, etc. But I just use the above recipe.

Okay, thanks Journalist! Sounds simple enough. Can I use slightly ground flax seeds or should I buy them whole. I would like to use the slightly ground since I already have some in the fridge.

Definitely use whole- I had some ground in my freezer and the gel turned nasty.

I used the ground up ones. It works, but it's super messy. Thus, all the different straining techniques. I haven't made a new batch yet using the new method.

It's more of a mess and even more difficult to strain. But you do get a thick gel!

Where can you find flaxseeds? Holland and barratts seem to only do flaxseed oil which I presume you dont want. What seems to be the best thing to use for straining then? Id really like to try this because my hair cannot tolerate normal gels.

I get mine at our local health food store. I actually read about someone using Flax seed oil, but I don't remember if they said it worked or not. I still use a strainer like this one and as long as the mixture is hot, It works fine.

I get my flaxseeds from Holland and Barratts but found that it was under the name lindseeds after a good 1/2 hour looking for it I thought I should just ask and realized I was standing right in front of the ruddy thing:laughing6:

WOWIE! I just made this stuff yesterday. I was lurkin' around the boards to see what I could do because my curls have been falling limp in this dry weather down here. Boy oh Boy!! I love flaxseed gel!! And flaxseeds are so cheap! Wow. I'm really in awe. I just can't believe how fabulous my hair is looking right now. Wish I had a camera. Thank you ladies so much! :toothy7::blob7:

For anyone who is adding EOs - how many drops are you adding? With this recipe I get about 2 ounces of gel. The last time I made it I added about 40 drops of lavender since my EO bottle recommended 20 drops to 1 ounce of massage oil.

I'm noticing my hair is a little stringy/oily and I didn't get this at all when I made the gel without EO. There are also EOs in the cleanser I've been using, so that could be a compounding factor.

I never thought of EOs as oily, but I guess if you use enough they can be.

Thanks, Kathymack. I'll try it again with a lot less EO. I suppose massage oil is a bit different than hair gel. :sad8:

ETA: I haven't made more yet, but I did keep using that bottle for the week and it ended up working okay. I think the oiliness I was experiencing was left over from a coconut oil DT I had done a day or two before. It gradually went away.

The flaxseed may have been rancid. They shouldn't smell bad.

Is there a way to increase the hold in homemade flax seed gel? I made flax seed gel a few months ago and just didn't get enough hold with it.
Would cooking more flaxseeds get a stronger hold?

I am trying to find a natural substitute for BRHG.

The first time I made it I cooked them a few minutes longer and had a much thicker gel. It was a little more difficult to work with, but I think I got better hold. But I'm interested to hear others' responses...
