help me cut my dtrs hair - or talk me out of it

Okay, if she can cut her hair - so can I!
BTW, if anybody is seeking the early Lucille Ball hairstyle - my 4 y/o can show you how. Apparently, you grab a bunch of 3b curls in the front of your head. Then, using highly specialized preschool safety scissors, jaggedly cut off all but an inch of hair. Pull remainder of hair into a panicked ponytail while stifling any cursewords - and voila!!! I Love Lucy!!!
Seriously, my dtr needs a haircut (3b, Lucy on top, just past shoulder in back). I'm just wanting to make the ends fall evenly. I can't even deal with the top craziness right now.
Her ends are uneven, and kind of fall out and away from her back - the best way to describe it is the way curly hair looks if you're wearing a big around-the-headband and the hair doesn't lay on the neck because of it?
Talk me out of it, it's okay. But nobody has done her curls justice anyway, as far as cuts go. I could take her to my stylist, and ruin the 2 hours of relaxation I get there ! - but even she didn't do that great a job ( still searching for the perfect curl-friendly stylist, but that's another board).
So, any suggestions appreciated. I've got hair scissors and no experience! Dangerous combo, I think.

I think that if you can get her to sit still long enough, just cut it straight across...maybe StruttsWife (or other stylist on here) will offer some help....
CK is the one!!
as of 6/17/10 - I have to add Joico!

We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names and each is a different color. But they all have to learn how to live in the same box. ~Anonymous

She is good at sitting still. I'm wondering do I comb hair straight back (toward a ponytail direction) then cut straight across OR do I comb hair straight down from a middle part (like a straight hair look) then cut?

I'm no expert, but from my experience it'd probably be best to part it and then cut. It'd have more potential to be even that way- I have never had a good cut where my hair was pulled back pony tail style and cut that way. It's always been parted. It might also help if you cut your daughter's hair while it's dry- then you will see what needs to be taken care of and what doesn't. All in all... Wow, and good luck! When I was young one of my brothers cut out a huge chunk of my hair, but my mom just let it grow out eventually. I don't think it was as dramatic as your daughters' sounds, but I feel for you!

I don't know, I've you-tubed how to cut hair - and it's just scaring me. Maybe I should just cough up the money and take her somewhere. It's just going to make me crazy to pay 20$ to an amateur for a cut that I'll wind up fixing later (there are always straight locks that I need to go back to even up). ah well, what to do...

My sympathies. My daughters both have fairly straight hair...and they've cut their hair and it's worse. No curl to hide it.
My youngest used safety scissors to cut the whiskers off the cat...ALL of them....twice.

I reccommend that you cut her hair as I will never take her to a hairdressers again:banghead:

Momedusa - maybe you can wash it, let it air-dry about 2/3 of the way, then cut it curl by curl across the bottom while it's just damp to even it out. Part her hair down the middle from the front to the crown, then from the top where the part ends down the side of her head to just behind the ear, to section the front from the back (clip those off and out of the way). Trim the back, then release the sides one at a time. Take about an inch section from the rear of the side and "match" it to the longest part of the last inch section of the back (usually where the curls grow from the nape) and cut those side section curls evenly so they are the same length as the back. Then use that section of the side as your "guide" to evenly cut the the rest of the side. Repeat on the other side. Stand in front of your daughter and "pull" down curls from the same place on each side to make sure she's the same length on both sides.
Then have a stiff shot when you're done

Took her in yesterday and it went well. My dtr did great - staring in a mirror is never hard for her!. The stylist pretty much went through the steps you mentioned, Strutts wife (I never would have known to clip parts up). She didn't take off too much and finished it with a pretty "heart" braid - praying my dtr never asks for one from me - there is no way I could do one!
This morning I noticed the usual uneven straighter bits that stick out from beneath - so if it's still noticeable in a couple of days I'll snip them off.
Overall, glad I took her in - but I think I'll mostly do at home trims following Strutts wife's kind post - and have a pro do it once or twice a year.
I'm so proud - gotta share - my dtr now knows how to "get my pretty curls back" in the mornings using my homemade spray and scrunching! 4 year-old hands scrunching is adorable!! i love curly:love4: and so does she
