I'm Bunnin' It...a grow-out challenge of sorts :)

curlynikkicurlynikki Posts: 2,420Registered Users
Hola Chicas :)

So, after going through a phase of extreme euphoria (completely elated by my new found growth after 3 months of buns), then denial and frustration (it couldn't be the buns), and finally acceptance (after looking at the facts), I'm ready to embark on another 3 months of protective styles. But, I don't want to do it alone. As always, I need the support of my fellow curly ladies :D

I bunned faithfully for 3 months and when I finally let it down, I was shocked to see thicker, shinier, longer hair. My ends have never looked this good..not in all the years I've been natural. I've worn my hair out since 2006 and never was able to retain length- I was stuck between SL and APL for an eternity. My hair grows really fast, but was splitting and snapping off just as quickly. Bunning must be the answer, as it is now grazing BSL. I spoke with a few long haired naturals, and most agreed that bunning (and other protective styles) is the way to go, and aided in the growing out of their waist-length hair. Ladies who hair isn't long enough to bun can join too...twists, braids and any other updos are allowed.

These are the guidelines (feel free to tweak them to meet your needs):

-Start Date- ASAP
-End Date- September 30
-Take a 'stretched' pic to show current length
-Bun or PS 5 days out of the week
-DT at least once per week (with or without heat)
-Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
-Check in for moral support periodically
-Take pics of cute earrings, headbands and other accessories to jazz things up a bit and inspire others :)

I'm going to do low and high buns and do my best to avoid putting undue strain on my hair. I'm going to wear my hair in a twist-out on the weekends (if I feel like it) to give my hair a break from being up. I'll use satin scrunchies (purchased from Ulta) and bobby pins that have the protective covering on the ends. I will re-moisturize every other day, and I plan to only use my fingers to manipulate the hair into the bun.

Anyone interested? We'll do the reveal at the end of September :D

Nikki, how many inches did you end up retaining? I might join! I do alot of ponytails and my stylist told me that I didn't have any split ends, mind you I haven't cut my hair in 8 1/2 months  I don't wear my hair down too much anyway.

See...case in point, lol. Wearing it up is the key. I even emailed the beautiful Terry at biracial hair and she said the same thing.

I'm not really sure how many inches...I never really measure. I can say that my hair was barely APL in the back and collar length in the front prior to Feburary and now it's grazing BSL in the back and is shoulder length in the front. That is some hellified growth. I figure, if I keep this up, I'll be at MBL in the back by the end of the year and BSL up front...hopefully. Pony-tails are PS's to me-anything where the ends aren't coming into contact with your clothes, and other things. I need to bun because my ends dry out.

Let me know what you decide to do!!!

    Here's my starting point:

    /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz290%2Falicianlee1%2FGrow-Out%2520June%252008%2FP1130235.jpg" class="Popup

I took this on 5/30/2008 and wore it out after that...up until today. I'm DTing now and will bun it in a few minutes.

I've been resisting the bun forever, but it seems I have no choice. My good friend who has natural 3c hair (waist length when dry!) swears by the bun. She said that helped her get started with the mad crazy length she now has.

As for my hair, the parts at the front aren't long enough to reach all the way to the back for a pony or bun, but I'll do my best. Do you think I should pin back the front part in some way, or maybe lay it down with a scarf to encourage growth? Also I don't want my sides to get too thin by pulling them back hard.. is there any way to avoid that happening?

Were you reading my mind...I was gonna start a grow out challenge bcuz all the others seem to have started already or you have to pay (yeah ok)
So I am in.:blob7: I have not measure my hair in a year but I had major growth from just bunning. I went from barely able to fit in a scrunchie to a big poof after big chop.

I have not tried the twist and am excited to try that so I am definately in :toothy4:

    Yay!

Bekka- I just put my hair up two seconds ago, and after putting the lengths back into a satin scrunchy, I smooth AOHC on the edges and immediately put on a scarf to make everything smooth. When almost dry, I use an ouchless headband to hold back the frizzies that may develop.

I wanna get in on this, even though most of my hair time is spent in a puff anyway, but does that count? I'd like for my ends to be protected but my hair is not able to go in a bun while dry and i'm afraid to bun wet and cause damage.

    Any suggestions?

then I'm totally for it. I had been planning a mini grow-out challenge for myself anyway. I just need to find a good DT. Any recommendations?

Leelee...I have been bunning wet for years...I really haven't had any damage (as a permie) and I am still doing as a natural. Someone else might be able to shed light if it has done damage their hair.

nocomanlasflores....I posted a DT suggestion a few days ago...take a look, I had a few recommendations that I am gonna try....let me know how it works for you

Nikki, i know that u mentioned wearing twists as a protective style; do u have any other style ideas? I had to get a "big chop" this winter because of color damage so my hair's longest layer is barely shoulder length when stretched out. My hair usually grows pretty fast when I don't do anything to it but I was thinking that if maybe, just maybe I wear protective styles for a few months I may be able to retain even more length than usual. Any thought on this or better yet, any styling ideas?
    TIA!

Leelee, I love your bun! It looks like mine. Now all you need is some dope azz earrings and/or a headband. Glam :D

Curlyfashionista, I like your name :) Let me think about that one...

Maria, YAY!!! I'll hold out on updates as well...except for wedding pics 8/2/2008!!!! I'm wearing the Twist-n-Curl for the wedding and probably a bun during most of the honeymoon.

nocomanlasflores, I use Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose + Aubrey White Camellia. I'm also liking Jessicurl's Weekly Deep Treatment (as a DT and leave-in).

    Forensic, let's do this girl!

My hair is always in a bun. Over the last year, my hair has definitely grown. Last year this time, my hair was just past my sholders, now stretched, it's to the middle of my boob. I have a question though, what kind of buns are you guys planning on doing? Can you post pictures up? I never mastered the Princess Leia bun, so I just put my hair in a ponytail holders and bring my ends to the ponytail holder. When I do this though, my ends always stick out, so I guess I'm not really protecting them. I would like to wear a bun where my ends aren't exposed.

I am in too! I just twisted my hair last night, so i'll try the method of keeping it in a protective style for about 5 days a week, using as many natural products as possible, and doing the deep conditioning treatments as well. I want my hair to grow as much as possible this summer. Hopefully I'll be able to do a bun by then because right now my hair isn't long enough.

Do any of you find that when your hair grows faster your scalp is really itchy? Mine itches like crazy whether my scalp is clean or dirty. Any suggestions? Or do I just have to live with an extra itchy scalp?
    Mostly 4a..crazy hair

Goal: healthy hair and longer hair

Ladies, after bunning my damp hair a minute ago, I came to the realization that posture is EVERYTHING, lol. With all of our mane pulled up and away from our face and neck, posture comes into play especially when you're considering that side profile. I'm a sloucher...I know, tisk, tisk...but looking at the diff from my normal posture and then straightening up by elongating my neck- it's like night and day. So, remember...shoulders back and head up :D

I'm going to wear this bun until the weekend, henna, and then bun it back up. I don't have any outstanding plans (or anyone to impress, lol) so I won't wear a twist-out this weekend.

Subbrock, welcome to the Challenge! Your Southern Tease/no stress bun is HOT!

Today is my first damp bun, i did this one like a ponytail with the ends tucked under then a scrunchie around it so it can secure those stray ends. It honestly looks like a ball sitting in the middle of my head but hey, it works.

So puffs and buns for me, occasionally i'll wear my hair out..not like it touches my shoulders anyway. Usually shrinks to the top of my neck.

I've learned that keeping my ends stretched a little bit is key to retaining length and preventing knots, tangling and splits. I set my wet pony-tailed and twisted hair on rollers...when it's 50% dry, I put it in the bun that Leelee described. It also adds a little more length and thus volume to the bun.

I'm in! I just did a semi-chop, so my updos are limited but I think I can manage it. I don't think it will benefit me as much as those with longer hair since I plan on cutting off the rest of my textured hair anyway at some point, but either way, I do agree updos do save the ends from a lot of damage.

This is so weird b/c I'm trying to stop wearing buns, lol or @ least not wear them too often. I absolutely love how buns look but I'm getting tired of em. When I first joined this site years ago under a different name, members told me that buns (if done often) were bad for the hair and ends, but I think it's the way that it's done. I do buns where my ends are often covered with an elastic band, but I assume it acts as a scissor after a while.

I hardly ever wear it out (probably 5-10x per year). I've always wanted to wear my hair out more often for a number of reasons: style variety, to let my hair breath, I don't have to pull it tight in order for it to stay, and mainly and most importantly because I don't like my V hairline. It is sooooooooo time consuming when I do buns sometimes b/c I want it to look perfect b4 I leave the house since I don't like the V hairline. So, I either alwayz do that front part or pull it all the way back and slick down the baby hurrs to take away from that darn V. It takes forever!!!!

When I wear my curly puffs I do the same thing with my hair line (that's annoying too), however it's never tight and if the slicked parts are kinda frizzy, I don't like it, but I don't worry much b/c the puff takes away from that. Plus, I started to notice my recent growth from wearing these puffs almost everyday and easing up on the buns.

I just wanna wear my hair completely out more often with the occasional buns (once I learn how to do it better). I'm working on some varieties and I shall post pics in the near future.

I don't think I have enough hair to make a bun. I've been wearing a pony puff since Saturday that sits up high. I'm in though, I want to see some real growth by the end of the summer.

my hair as of 10 minutes ago:

I'm pretty sure I'll have no problem keeping this up for the summer as lazy as I am.
