Gray Curls?

Anyone pay attention to the different curl between the gray and non-gray hair on your head?

I plucked a couple of gray hairs today and noticed that my gray seems to be a different shape than my brown strands. It's a flatter hair strand, more coarse and tighter curled than the brown ones... is this normal?!? Am I developing some weird issue here?

Are gray hairs usually different than the others? Does this mean that sometimes curlies/straighties can end up totally opposite once going gray?

Just a strange observation... carry on with what you were doing... I need a nap... :)

Mine are much straighter than my dark hair. The texture seems to be a little more wirey than my normal hair.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. I (if I didnt' colour my hair ) might be 90% grey...........my hair is way curlier than it used to be (auburn). I don't know if it's because I'm now a CG but my hair is way curlier than it used to be!

Most of mine tend to be less curly and more wiry also. Or is it just that those are the hairs that are going gray?!?! :!:

My greys don't seem to be any different to the browns, though I have read that hair texture changes as it loses it's colour.

My hair is mostly grey, too, under the color and my hair has gotten a lot curlier, even before I found this site. Other than that, the texture doesn't seem to be any different. I think it all depends on your genetics.

I only have a few but they seem to blend in with the curls. I do have one crazy eyebrow grey hair that sticks straight out however!!

I've only ever had five (surprising because I'm close to forming an ulcer b/c of my inability to cope with stress) and it was pin straight... weird part: it stuck out of my forehead. I don't even know how/why that happens, but come finals week every semester it comes back...evil little thing...

I've got a few white/grays on the right side of my head that I attribute to stress. They're wiry too.

I have 5 or 6, I was pulling them out but I try to restrain myself. I have found one corkscrew curly hair, a few really rough an wiry, and one or two straightish smooth. I am a wavy, this will be an interesting ride!

I have had one so far, but it blended in so well I didn't notice it until my b/f did. :sad8: For the record it was curly too.
The problem is... I'm only 25!:sad7: So far that is the only one that I have seen...

Yes, my grays are straighter, too.

I developed one of these a couple of months ago! I hate it!

I shed my first gray hair today. *pout*

It's less fine than the rest of my hair, so I'd call it medium-textured. It's the shiniest shade of silver, and it's curly!

Slight guano: Is it somewhat normal to shed hairs that are only 4" long? I guess I've never paid attention to it before, but I just figured that hair grows and grows and when it gets tired of growing, it falls out. This cute little gray hair wasn't on my head for even a whole year, based on its length. I'll miss it.

The only thing different about my silver hairs is the color. They curl the same, same texture, softness and shine. I first got mine at 20, and 10 years later still no change to them, except for a few more.

I'm a weirdo, I like mine. If my hair curls right, I can get a stripped curl in the front. It's freakin awesome!

I have a good percentage of grey hair, I have been going grey since 20's because I have red hair. Mine is curler now too, I have to color every 2-3 weeks my roots too because I grow fast still. I get 1/2 in of new GRAY lol every 2-3 wks (38 now btw).

Also had anyone noticed with their graying, that it is more in the temple? I feel like if I went natural I would have this big circle of white hair in the front ,and I seem to still have a more normal hair color in the back

Thank you cympreni, you are absolutely right, they aren't grey, they are silver - far more classy!

My silver ones don't curl from the root - mind you, my daughter tends to sneak up on me and pull them out before they have a chance to grow very long. They appear to be quite a wiry texture (I have a weird mix of wiry, fine and in-betweens).

My natural color at the temples is white. I started going grey there in my early twenties. I think that's pretty much a general pattern - the temples going first and the back last. But that being said, there are always differences.

I'm hoping that I go entirely white. I love a full head of white hair!

By the way, I also have those weird white eyebrow hairs - about four in each eyebrow - and I totally pluck them!

I'd say most of my gray is also at the temples and bangs area... though it's very widely spread through both sides as well, it's just SOLID gray at the temples and one spot in my bangs.

CYMPRENI - I could get a striped curl on the top right side of my bangs if I'd quit dying my hair dark brown!! :laughing7:

Sometimes I wish I'd never started dying my hair... all the people on both sides of my family have the prettiest shiny silver-white hair, and my grays are the same shiny white color! I think it would be really pretty! But I'm just not ready to be 70%+ gray at 34... vanity I guess. Come to think of it... if I let it go gray, my scalp probably wouldn't glare through as noticably either... hmmm...

To guano my own thread... any good suggestions for starting to go natural after dying dark brown for a zillion years? My guess would be just to switch to those 'no lift' wash out colors to do my roots with, I'd just have to do it so darn often to cover these stubborn suckers!

I also thought about one last BC while it's still above shoulder length, just to get most of the darkest old dyed bits off... but I just can't bring myself to do it!

You could do lowlights on just the gray root area to blend it in. This would let some gray show but also let it grow in together. From RC's website:
    Lowlighting Instructions:

[*]For hair that has lost dimension or needs to be a little darker. Follow instructions for highlighting with a cap. Use one of the Color by Robert Craig shades that is darker than the color of your hair now. Also, we have the Color Tool Kit that contains everything above except the bleach and it is available in the shopping cart under the accessories.Photo 18 Photo 19
[*]Following the pattern in these photos pull more hair out from the back and lower sides and progressively less towards the front. Photo 20 Photo 21 Photo 22
    also:
    Formula 1: Grey Reduction
For: Black or Brown hair with any amount of grey.
Results: This formula evens out grey patches or reduces the amount of grey. Great for those who want to go natural slowly or don't mind some grey. This method allows you to go longer in between touch-ups because you aren't covering 100% of the grey.
With a highlighting cap, pull fine sections of hair through the cap doing more in the back and progressively less toward the front and around the face. If you have a grey streak or patch you can pull more hair from that area to even out the grey. Apply any shade of Color by Robert Craig that matches your natural, dark color on the hair pulled through the cap and process for 20 to 35 minutes. Shampoo, rinse and condition. Style as desired.

But I would choose a color 2-3 shades lighter than your base color, as most colors go darker on curly hair. :)

I think I'll be doing this when I'm ready to go gray, but that won't be for a while or until my gray comes in more evenly. :tongue5:
