Trying Hard to Love My Curls

dzlovedzlove Posts: 38Registered Users
so i've always had a hard time styling my curls. they looked awful in middle school, so i hit high school and started straightening. i've been straightening my hair for more than 4 years now, and it is just such a pain to do every day. plus, i hate putting my hair through the heat damage. so now i am trying to go curly. for some reason, when i style my hair, the curls on the under layers look awesome, but the top layer is sort of confused. it gets maybe a bit wavy in some parts, and a very poofy straight in other parts. any styling tips?

Hey I get exactly the same trouble- only being doing this a week or so so and haven't found a conditioner or combo that works great for me yet. (Have been informed can take months lol!)

However I did (literally hour ago) try an acv rinse (apple cider vinegar, couple teaspoons in cup or two of water poured over hair and washed out with conditioner) and mixing honey in with my conditioner which has made my hair the curliest ever been and seems to have helped with the frizz.

I would say that your hair is probably in need of some extra moisture and conditioning due to all the years of straightening so try a deep treatment or rich conditioner - Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose is good (although, just to confuse you, I have learn past week that you can over-moisturise!) Search around and ask other curlies who have similiar hair to yours what their routine is - everyone is really friendly and willing to help. Good luck!

The wavy parts might be damage:( i suggest you try aphogee protein treatment or a lighter protein treatment (if you are protein sensitive) then continue with a DT (because protein treatment can be drying for some people).Keep your hair moisturize also.If the condition doesn't change for the better (after some months) you could start snipping the damage areas little by little till you reach the undamaged hair.Hope this helped.

ok thanks y'all. i tried the acv rinse and honey in the conditioner and got cone free products today. my hair looks to be doing a bit better, but it definitely needs a good deal more work, too.

i was wondering about the protein treatment, though. i looked at walgreens, and there weren't any hair products that were a protein treatment, but there were like protein supplement pills. i did assume you were talking about a hair product, though. can you give me some ideas of hair products that would have that? thanks!

The wavy parts might be damage:( i suggest you try aphogee protein treatment .

Are you serious?? I have a TON of this stuff!! I bought a bunch of those 3 part sample kits (comes with shampoo, balancing moisture & the protein treatment)...

But their are definite no-no's in the ingredients so I have since been on the hunt for a CG friendly protein treatment.

Are you saying it's A-OK to use this stuff?? I most certainly need to, and would love to not have wasted the money I spent!
