Natural deodorant/anti-perpsirant suggestions?

jojobjojob Posts: 127Registered Users
That actually works?

I have been slowly switching to all natural personal care products (as my old stuff runs out) and I am finding that my natural cocobetaine soap does not completely wash off my current (very not natural) deodorant.

The challenge is that I do not "glow", I sweat so the stuff has to really work (I have tried the crystal, no good).

hey this topic has come up LOTS of times before.

do an advanced search on natural AND deodorant and you'll find some really good threads. many are in the non-hair discussion forum.

    good luck!

I've used Tom's and it burned and irritated my underarms. I switched to J/A/S/O/N organic deordorant and had no problems.

Sadly there are no natural anti-persperants that I know of. There are natural deodorants that make the sweat not smell, but if you sweat as much as I do it will still break on through to the other side of your shirt.

I tried Oyin's funk butter and liked it until it started irritating my underarms. Now I'm using Tom's apricot deodorant which not only smells yummy but helped me get over the irritation from Oyin.

No natural products worked for me until I found something called Lavilin. It's a white cream that comes in a little pot.

    Pros:
    It really works
It lasts 2 or more days - you don't have to reapply everyday
It isn't even remotely stinky like some other naturals
The white stuff doesn't get on your clothes
Available online or at Whole Foods

    Cons:
    It isn't an antiperspirant
It's a little expensive, at $9-15 a crack, but it does last awhile.
3A - fine, just above shoulder length, w/red color and highlights.

Product: Suave Coconut leave in, Joico Joiwhip mousse, Angell or F/X Curl booster on wet hair. Sometimes rotate in ReCoil/CK.

Routine: Scrunch with cloth diapers, then use Shellynot's clipping method. Diffuse a bit without touching hair. Leave clips in at least half and hour. Remove clips and air dry.

    Day 2: Pineapple, no product.

Oh I hope that works for me. I just bought this yesterday (it's funny how timely some threads can be) because on one underarm I have this itchy irritation so I picked up this deoderant to try out.

I had the same thing happen to me when I used the Oyin Funk Butter (unscented). I loved the product until that started happening.

I switched to Weleda spray deodorant. Works well for me on odor. I find that I don't perspire as much as I thought I would without the "antiperspirant" part of this product. I tried the Rose scent but didn't love it. I like the Citrus scent much better.

I agree. When I switched to a non-aluminum deodorant I was afraid I'd start sweating buckets but surprisingly that's not the case. Then again, summer isn't here yet so that may be the true test for me.

You picked up the Tom's? I really like it. On Monday I used Oyin only to get itchies and redness an hour later. On Tuesday I used Tom's and by mid-afternoon the redness was gone. This morning there isn't any redness and the irritation bumps I had have disappeared.

Yes - I picked up the Toms yesterday. I used it the first time this a.m and already it feels better. Mine was red and itchy.

I do not know what is causing it - it's only one side and I have not changed anything. My skin (all of it) has been very testy lately so who knows.

Thanks Ladies, as usual you are a fountain of information. I am going to try the lush first (because of the discount right now), then probably Dr. Hansk... however that is spelled, possibly the Wella if I have to -
I am someone who sweats through mitchium anti-perspriant so we will see if this experiment works. Fingers crossed.
BTW, the first ingredient in Mitchum is water, the second is cyclopentasiloxane. So now I know it seems like I have to exfoliate the stuff off. *wishing I read the back of the tube sooner*

if you ever want to try crystal deodorant again, i've found that it does work for me if i layer it. i use Crystal Body brand crystal stick deodorant first and apply a couple layers. then i spritz on the Naturally Fresh brand spray mist, as insurance.

either one alone doesn't work well, but together, they work perfectly.

i tried tom's and weleda but i prefer something unscented, cheap and totally non-irritating.

the key w/ natural deo so that you do not get irritation is to NOT apply them immediately after shaving. natural deos contain salts (to stomp out the odor)....so if you shave then apply you will get welts or itching or general irritation. the key is to shave maybe at night, sleep then by the next morning you're good to go. you can't shave and go w/ natural deos....sorry!

i wear kiss my face unscented rollon and it WORKS!!!! scents turn weird...the unscented is fabulous. i sweat like a pig at the gym and it works and honestly i don't have sweaty arm issues even though it's not an anti-persperant (unless i'm in the gym in which case i sweat)....

I think skin sheds off so much that cones are not really an issue. Especially if you shave that's probably more than enough exfoliation.

I've been able to use Tom's right after I shave with no irritation whatsoever. When I was using the Oyin, I tried it out and the first time there wasn't irritation, but there definitely was stinging after the 2nd time around. The Tom's I'm using is called the long-lasting deodorant stick and there isn't any salt listed in the ingreds. Rather, they use zinc ricinoleate, glyceryl laurate, hops, and caprylic/capric triglyceride for odor.

I use Crystal Body deodorant roll-on and it keeps my dry and unstinky all day/night. I can use it for 3 days straight, and use Tom's for the next 3 days. If I only used Tom's I can smell myself at around 4-5pm. If I use Crystal all the time, I actually get too dry.

The no-shaving-before-deodorant thing wouldn't work for us light-skinned dark-haired folks. If I shave at night, I have a 5 o'clock shadow by morning.

funk butter (hope that's the right name)? Uh, I think I'd rather deal with b.o. than put something called that on my body. Who thinks these things up? Didn't they talk to a marketing team? PS, you get a LOT more sales if you DON'T call it funk butter!

    That being said...I'm tempted...very tempted!

I get good odor control with the funk butter. I mix it with moisturizer or something (lately I used corn huskers lotion because it was there) and that helps reduce irritation.

But in the summer, I get a lot of wetness. So I was using the Adidas aluminum free which kept me drier but is now discontinued.

Tom's isn't working for me when it's warm. I guess I'll try the weleda.

    LAVILIN USERS! I have questions.

Do you reapply after every shower?
Do you only soap up when you're plannng to reapply?
Is it okay to apply daily? Their website seems to say yes, the box says no. ???

On Oprah last week, the Eco lady said that 'Herbal Magic' roll on deodorant was one of the best.
Don't know anything about it or where to get it, but thought I'd share.

I use and:love5: Alvera Aloe Herbal Roll-On Deodorant

It keeps me dry and odor free all day. I apply once, let dry and reapply. I buy it from a health foods store.

ETA: I have used it daily for almost a year.

The Lavilin didn't work for me at all.

I will have to check this out...the Tom's didnt work for me. Well, I take that back - it cleared up the rash I had but I was smelly about midway through the day. So right now I am back to using a OTC product but I would like one that won't break me out.

    Xcptnl,

I have tried a lot of them:

    Jason
    Kiss My Face
    Tom's of Maine
    Herbal Magic
    Avalon
    and several other brands.

I think it also helps that I use African black soap. The soap also seems to help with keeping odor away.

Well it's good to know I'm not the only one who's tried all these different concoctions with unsatisfactory results. I was starting to feel like a mutant sweat monster.

I usually apply the non-aluminum ones twice (at night and in the morning). The Adidas formula was not perfect by any means but I could live with it. These others, not so much. I might try some crazy recipes I have (based on using vodka)...or I'll finally make a bid for privacy at work and just go without.

Goodness no! The Adidas made me extra funky...did not agree with my body chemistry at all. And I had to used a body powder with them to keep the wetness away.

Some of the ones I tried were so strongly scented that they made me sneeze, and I could smell it all day. Another reason I really like my current brand - very softly scented.

    Well.

I tried the Herbal Magic over 10 days. It was OK, but it contains baking soda and I got irritated skin.

I had great hopes for Nature de France's Le Stick, because their soap works so well for me, but it also contains enough baking soda to irritate. Le phooey.

I couldn't find Alvera locally, but discovered it in my parents' town. This would be a winner if it didn't contain triethanolamine (which they list as TEA). It's also irritating my skin! I might contact them about it, because as far as I can tell, this ingredient doesn't provide any deodorizing powers and it's not a preservative. Maybe they could use a less irritating substitute.

Believe it or not, I still have others to plow through.
