Haircut success!

So, I got my hair cut today. I don't know why, but haircuts are always traumatic for me, even though I haven't received a really bad haircut for probably 8 years. I only got my hair cut about 6-8 weeks ago, but it wasn't cut by someone who knew curly hair.

So, after finding this website, I decided to bite the bullet and get a good haircut that will work with, not against, my curls. The recommended stylist from NC.com in Utah didn't have any appointments that jived with my schedule, so I went to another stylist that was trained by said curly hair specialist recommended from the site. Following?

I didn't know the main recommended person was DevaCut certified (or whatever they're called), but she is...bonus. And my girl, Kara, has been trained by her for 1 1/2 years and she revealed to me that in August she will be going to get her DevaCut certification in Los Angeles. I had to wait for the appointment, but somehow with the setup, I really didn't mind.

Kara took me to her seat and talked to me a little about my hair, what I wanted to happen, etc. I, of course had a total hair rebellion going on today. I made the smart move of going to Target and spending insane amounts of money in their professional hair products section (mostly Bumble & Bumble), then decided to use said untried products the day of my haircut appt. My hair was frizzy, triangle-like and had very undefined curls.

Kara took it all in stride and began cutting, never once touching a comb. She put more layers in the back to remove the curl bomb at the nape of my neck (super-dense, people), but decided to keep the length around my face because it framed it nicely. She asked me if I ever straightened my hair anymore and decided what to do accordingly and began snipping random hairs. She said she wouldn't do that if I still straightened it because it would result in a big piece of hair standing out randomly. She cut individual curls, then stopped and decided to cleanse, condition and style before she cut any further to see if we could get the real SunshineGrrls curls to come out and play.

She washed me with Lo-Poo at the roots, then conditioned with OneC and let it sit in there for a long time while she massaged my head. Then she rinsed and srunched my hair while it was still in the washing bowl. She draped my shoulders with a towel and walked me back to her station where she gently "finger-combed" the front hair back where it belonged. She used the Deva Leave-in to get through my hair (it's very tangly), then put ArcAngell in for the hold. I think at this time she thought I was lying about the fact that my hair really is curlier than it appears. She used the ArcAngell to give me a better hold and encourage more curl. She scrunched it in with my head upside down with that icky squicky noise sounding each time she scrunched.

She scrunched and scrunched and scrunched to make sure the product was distributed evenly then sprayed a bit of Set it Free on my hair and then began diffusing. Okay, the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-DevaFuser-Kit-p-913.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devafuser]Devafuser[/buylink] or whatever it is called...it's cool, but I don't know how effective it would be for my hair. She dried and she dried and she dried...it took forever with my hair never achieving the curl I knew it could. She finally got my hair dry to the point when she could cut again and went to it. She impressively cut my hair so it was close to my head, but still with body, but didn't give me triangle head! She fussed and fussed a little more, cut, fussed a little more and declared that she had to stop because she had hair envy.

The result? Lovely, shiny, lustrous wavy hair! Uh, so I was hoping for a boost in the curls, but who cares? Even the canopy looked fab with the curls laying uniformly and mixing with the other curls. Who knew a good cut could do all that? Well worth the money and kudos to Kara...I will definitely be seeing her again!

The best part? She didn't push products. I bought some, but she didn't push any product sales.

    Awesome.

My last haircut came out decent, but for my next one I'm considering the (one and only) Deva-trained-thing stylist in my city. The combing, I cannot handle the combing.

I bet that it will be curlier when you style it.

I'll take pictures tomorrow and post them so you can see. I have to be honest that when I came home, I just threw it up in a ponytail, so pictures were not an option today. I should have taken before and after photos, but I'm not that proactive!

I highly recommend a curly hair specialist. It's amazing the difference in cut. I must admit that there were a few moments of panic when I saw her take a lock of hair and cut it an inch or so. But I did tell her I don't ever wear my hair straight, so the uneven locks won't be a problem. And she told me that after a few days, if there are any problems with the cut or any strands that need to be trimmmed, to just let her know and she'll have me come in to fix it. I love good customer service!

The best part is she only charges $50 for a curly haircut! From reading here, that is a screaming deal. I guess I'll have to brace myself for a higher bill when she gets her certification, huh? I wish the western US had more Deva Stylists.

Riot: I'm telling you...you go to cosmetology school, I would fly up and have you do my hair from now on!

Kara is great, isn't she? But so is her teacher/coworker, Ann Marie, who I also adore.

Kara is closer for me at her Bountiful location, which is great for winter trips because I'm all about spending less time on bad roads with crazy drivers. :tongue5: But a trip to SLC in the summer to see Ann Marie is great because then I can go to The Body Shop or Ben & Jerry's afterwards. ;)

I'm so glad it all went well!

What products did you buy; Enjoy or Deva, or something else?

LOL! I so should. If I did have to comb for any reason, I'd be working with a head full of conditioner and starting at the bottom working up in 1/2" increments with a wide comb. Imagine the business when the kids come home from camp with a month's worth of mats and their moms can bring them in for a comb-out. I will never understand why most stylists cannot grasp such a fundamental as detangling long or curly hair.

$50 woohoo! That is a good deal.

Yeah I'm not much for straightening these days. I do use updos where it's basically pulled straight, but y'know, it's an updo so I don't care if the ends are uneven then.

One thing I do notice with my last cut, it's parted on the side and the "less hair" side is curling and shrinking up more, making it look uneven. I know it is completely even when pulled stick straight with a tiny, damaging comb since that's how it was cut. :? So yeah, I am leaning toward trying Deva next time.

I'm kind of more excited to see how it looks when you styled it vs. the stylist styling it. That's kind of the real test, in my mind.

True statement on the stylist hair versus my hair styling results. I did like her style when she got finished, the curls were uniform and I didn't have wild hairs going everywhere. It was just flat to my head, which I kind of told her I wanted. I said I didn't want it poofing out in the triangle head, so I think she interpreted that to mean I don't want it big. And she didn't scrunch my hair while diffusing, she just lifted it up and placed it over the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-DevaFuser-Kit-p-913.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devafuser]devafuser[/buylink]. No wonder it didn't curl up much! Der.

One thing I mentioned to her was that even if I did straighten my hair, it bounces so much, a random hair won't be noticed. No matter how hard I try, I just can't swing stick straight hair. The ends always bounce up. Speaking of updos, I've been meaning to mention this product I found a long time ago and love. It's expensive, but it has a lifetime warranty and you can get fancy-schmancy ones for outings! The website is http://www.butterflyclips.net/. I love mine when my hair is long enough. Great for "I can't be bothered to do my hair" days.

Wonder Twin, I need pictures... I am so glad that you had an awesome experience. There are 2 Devacut stylists relatively near where I live. I have debated about whether it would help or not... I just don't know. My current stylist took my Curly Girl book and read it. She lets me bring my own products into her shop...she does whatever I ask. So, I really don't want to mess up a good thing by going to someone else and making her mad. :)

I'll work on pictures. I have to get in the shower and style it, which will be done later today.

Lazyloops: I bought Deva products. I decided on OneC and ArcAngell. I did like the Set it Free, but will have to wait for another payday before I work that one out. I don't know how I feel about buying them because I looked at the ingredients and though it looks fancy, it's really just the same as everything else. And they have castor oil in it. Go figure.

Oh, Riot...you are now officially my favorite person in the whole wide world! The dream might be realized! I might have some 3a in my hair. My life is complete! Who knew a haircut would do that for me?

Now, if only I can get good 2nd day hair with this...I might be able to die a happy woman.

  • Riot CrrlRiot Crrl Posts: 3,135Registered Users
As a fairly solid 3a (most days) all I can tell you is don't expect second day anytime soon if you are anything like me, LOL!

I just get a haystack from sleeping on it. Doesn't matter how I put it up either. That's OK, I like getting it wet all the time and it doesn't take long to do. All things considered mine looks better now than it did when I treated it as straight/wavy and air dried every day and had it blunt and never used heat. Plus I don't have to deal with it being wet for many hours.
  • SunshineGrrlSunshineGrrl Posts: 3,823Registered Users Curl Neophyte
Before the cut, it was a pretty sure bet that I could get 2nd day hair. I don't know if it's because I sleep on my side so the hair never gets squashed in the back or what. I can usually wake up, get my hands wet and rewet the hair by my ears (probably where I lay on it, but it's wavy at best, so it doesn't survive no matter what I do. It usually ends up tucked behind my ears anyway.), diffuse slightly and go. Maybe a bit of gel on my hands to get rid of wild flyaways randomly throughout my head. Done, over with.

I'm quite excited for Spring and Summer here. Then I can leave my hair wet and let it air dry. And I can finally see the sun again. I don't think I've really seen the sun (aside from sunroof glimpses while commuting) in...oh...4 months, maybe more. I'm a sun worshipper. Probably against my religion, but God made the sun, so He'll understand.

    Thank you...thank you very much!

I also got crap from another stylist for wearing my hair curly and not using shampoo. She cut my hair about 8 weeks ago and didn't give me a great cut. I good cut yes, but not great. Now with this one...I doubt I'll ever go to someone not Curly trained again.

Your hair looks awesome and I'm so glad you had a good experience! I just had my first Devacut on Saturday and LOVE how my hair is doing. I still can't get second day hair, so far, but that's okay.

Awww...you guys are so sweet! Woke up this morning and the hair was a little wild. I dampened it with water, scrunched and diffused to get rid of the water. It snowed overnight...speaking of sun...where the heck is spring?! It's almost April, people! Anywho...The hair is still okay, has more spirals with smaller diameter and a little less volume than yesterday.

Would I consider it successful 2nd day hair? Yes. Would I have liked it to be like before where I rolled out of bed and wet a small section and left? Yes. But I will take this hair and haircut over the previous!

Oh, you are just the sweetest things ever! I must admit,it's not quite as voluminous as it appears, but it's always had a lot of body.

Taxes. I hate taxes. Too bad I chose a profession that has me dealing with them on a daily basis. Luckily, I don't have to do too much for mine. Turbotax, baby!

I'm lucky...I don't own a house, don't have to itemize. Therefore, taxes tend to be a breeze for me. One of the benefits of being young and single. Well, relatively young.
