finally.... botox!

rouquinnerouquinne Posts: 13,737Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
i think i wrote about the possibility of getting this 3 years ago and i'm finally going to do it next Thursday.

the local doctor who owns the spa where i'm getting it done knows the head of neurology at the research lab where i used to work, so i'm getting a "special family price" that i'm afraid to disclose.

i guess, for the sake of a new column, i'll have to do before and after pictures!

It's been 4 months since my first round. I'm going in Tuesday for some more since my forehead is starting to wake up. I'm not having the Klingon thing anymore -thank goodness. It really does makes such a difference in my forehead and a boost to my self-image.

Good Luck, Rou! I hope you like it!

Yeah, you need to read my other posts. I had a really strange reaction to the Botox--one my doctor had never seen before.

karen, 38 units sounds like an awful lot of Botox. my contact at Allergan sent my pics to someone in that dept and they said i should need a maximum of 25 units. in fact, most dermatology/plastic surgery websites seem to recommend 20 to 30 units at most for that area.

and you really should ask for a refund of the money she charged you for the touch-up because it seems to me she used too much the first time around.

but i'm not a doctor and i'd contact Allergan myself about the side effect.

    now i'm nervous...

I went back today for my 4 month touch up. She used 26 units (including my crow's feet). She even gave me a 10% discount for the Klingon effect. :compress:

You didn't have the crow's feet done last time, correct? How's that working out for you?

This is the first time to have my crow's feet done. It's really too soon to tell how it's going to work. Botox takes 4-7 days to get the full effect.

Pain to me is relative --it's nothing compared to childbirth. :laughing7:

They do use a blower to freeze your skin a little to numb it up. Uncomfortable is how I would describe it.

Rou, don't expect immediate results. It takes 4-7 days to see the effects. I think you'll love it!

that article points out these facts, too:

"...this treatment has been used on millions of people for years, and we're not seeing major central nervous system uses with it.''

"Mouse and rat physiology is different from that of humans, so the results may not predict what happens in people..."

"The authors used a laboratory preparation of botulinum toxin and did not use Botox..."

Yeah, well, I'll put Botox on the list of the many other things that are supposed to kill or mame me:

the dye from my haircolor for 36 years..

the Formaldehyde from the fake nails I wore for years...

the Saccharine that I used on EVERYTHING....

the Splenda that they just don't know about yet.....

Oh, and don't forget the meteor that is supposed to obliterate the Earth December 21, 2012. (Hey, that's only 4.5 more years of Botoxin' left!)

I'm sure I'll die of another colon polyp, complications of my diabetes, or heart failure due to my newly discovered tricuspid regurgitation well before anything else kills me. I might as well go out lookin' good! It's just a matter of time! :clock:

okay... i probably made the poor doctor nervous because i told him i was writing about this experience in my column AND that i checked him out too.

    :D

but we discussed in detail the effect i was going for and how best to achieve it. after i scrunched my face up about 100 times, he decided that he would give me 8 units of Botox directly into the wrinkle i wanted to eliminate rather than injecting above (which is what probably gave you the Klingon-effect, Karen) and below (which could make my eyebrows droop).

for the M effect between the eyes, you actually need more Botox than forehead wrinkles because you use more muscles to make that movement. i've seen recommendations as high as 40 to 44 units just for that small area, but Dr. Andy thought i could get away with 16 because i only had two creases in that spot and they are still not too deep.

    so, 24 units in total.

as for pain, it wasn't as bad as some i've had, but it also hurt more than i thought i would - and that's mainly because you do have to scrunch up the muscle for the injection. if you're easily grossed out, stop reading now...

when the muscle is contracted and they do an injection into it, it crunches... there's no other way to describe it.

    :shaking:

he gave me cold compresses and we chatted for a while. i have a follow-up in two weeks to see how i'm doing. he did say that i have fabulous skin for a woman my age and when i mentioned that i carry a parasol in the summer, he looked at me strangely and then said "i think i've seen you. do you have a long brown beaded skirt?"

    which i do.

check out my May column for my results.
