For you ladies who want your relaxed hair to curl...

I think I've found something that actually works! :occasion9:

I was digging through my "product graveyard" after unsuccessfully "plopping" with Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Gel(like putting water on my hair). I had my hair up for about an hour and it was just stringy & straight. Didn't hold any type of bend or curl at all. :(

I went into my closet and pulled out my Kids Organics Shea Butter Detangling Moisturizing Hair Lotion. Mainly because I knew it detangled and was moisturizing. I slathered some on my hair and scrunched. But every time I scrunched - new waves, curls, and ringlets appeared! :blob7: This doesn't even happen with regular gel! So I did it a bit more and then just plopped again. It was about 1a.m. so I went to bed. When I woke up I had TONS of curls, waves and ringlets!!! And my hair was BIG! lol. For the record I have very fine hair that it medium borderline thin. But now it was THICK looking, curly and soft!

My only complaint was that the curls were clumped together in smaller clumps than I like, but that's probably because 1)My hair was already about 60% - 70% dry already -and- 2)I already had gel in my hair and over scrunched so it separated too much.

I'm gonna wash(co wash) my hair again tonight and try it by itself and see what happens. But I can tell you that my hair has never been this curly(especially the relaxed parts). :toothy7:

Here are the ingredients:

Water, Propylene Glycol, Polyquaternium-37, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicapreate, PPG-1 Trideceth-6, PEG 150 Distearate, Soybean Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Phenyl Trimethicone, Acrylamidopropyltrimonium Chloride/Acrylamide Copolymer, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Hydrolized Soy Protein, Lanolin Oil, Olive Oil, Mink Oil, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Egg Protein, Milk Protein, Cholesterol, Honey, Silk Amino Acids, Corn Oil, BHA, BHT, Coconut Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Rosmarius Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Equisetum Hyemale (Horsetail) Extract, Stearalkonium Chloride, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cyclomethicone, Carrot Oil, Fragrance, Dye, DMDM Hydantoin.

No, it's not CG, but it works! I've seen it at most Rite Aids, CVS's, Kmarts, and Walmarts for under $5. :occasion9:

P.S. I've recently tried Paul Mitchell's Round Trip and that didn't really do much to my hair to make it curl. It might have done a little, but nothing compared to this stuff. Also, with the Round Trip, my hair was dry and hard, but with the Shea Butter Detangling Moisturizing Hair Lotion my hair is very soft and feels moisturized. Hope this helps. :)

Oh wow maybe next time you should try the same thing, but air dry or use a difusser. I also use the Kid's Organic shea butter and I love it. When I use it under gel it gives me nicer curls. Its also a great detangler for my little girl.

I co washed last night, but left my Kids Organics in the living room next to the computer. (doh!)

When I used it, it was by accident because I just wanted something moisturizing and detangling because my hair was straight, limp, and tangling. Imagine my surprise when I put this stuff in and my hair actually curled!

I can't wait to try it again and see if it works the same(or even better). :D

I used to use it on my daughter all the time. She has super thick 4a/4b hair and when I used this the brush would slip through her hair like a hot knife through butter. Plus it made her hair so lovely and curly. But I thought that was just because her hair is curly. Little did I know...

Hope it works nicely for anyone who tries it. But it's inexpensive, so not much of a loss if it doesn't.

"dang sounds good but im done with using stuff with cones in it"

I'm gonna try to be done with cones too since I got rid of all of my relaxed hair. So far so good, but it's only been 1 day and it's really short. I don't think there's much I could do to make it look better or worse anyway.

so u have any pics of ur hair with this product in it? and how did u use this, did u use this as a leave in and let ur hair air dry?
  • SystemSystem Posts: 39,059 Administrator
    No, no pics. Sorry. :(

Today I borrowed my brother's webcam to post that one pic in my fotki. My regular camera got broken a few months ago and I haven't replaced it.

What worked for me with this product was using a gel first and then this on top. It almost acted like a curl enhancing product. Then I would scrunch and plop my hair on top of my head using butterfly clips and let it air dry. I also found that if I put it on my hair before the gel while it was soaking wet, it would take f.o.r.e.v.e.r. for my hair to dry.

It did make my relaxed hair more curly, but the relaxed hair was so fine & weak that it looked like curly burnt spaghetti(I have black hair) hanging off of my thicker curls.

But I've also used it on my daughter's natural 3c/4a/4b hair and it defined the curls along with detangling really well.

    Hope that helps. :)

curly burnt spaghetti, thats so funny! i actually passed by a discount store and saw it for like 3 bucks! i wanted to get but decided to have some control, cuz i just bought tigi curls rock on sale the other day and im waiting until i buy a diffuser to try it out.

ok sunshine, i tried this stuff and hated it! the smell is good in the bottle, but once i put in my hair t had an odd smell on my hands. now i tried this on dry hair, cuz i wanted to use it as a daily moisturizer. my hair felt like build-up and kinda dry. im glad that i only spent 3 dollars on it, so it wasnt that much of a waste. but i dont plan on using this again.

Aww, sorry you guys had bad experiences with it. :(

They changed the formula recently too.
I bought a new bottle and some of the ingredients are rearranged and it isn't as moisturizing as before and the smell is worse. It wasn't *great* before, but it's worse now. Boo!

BUT (if you still want to listen to anything I have to say :p ) I've been using something else that has been giving me nice, clumpy curls, and adds moisture and softness - Fantasia IC Pure Tea Silky Gel Activator. It's a curl activator(as the name indicates) but doesn't leave my hair greeeeeeazy like other curl activators have and it doesn't have that "curl activator" smell. Most of them give me a horrible headache. :( But this one smells like sweet, fruity, tea.

I haven't used it with any gel. I'm kind of tired of the really firm curls I get with gel, plus I felt like even with a leave-in my hair was getting a little dry. I wanted softer more "natural"(like curly, slightly frizzy baby hair) looking curls and I can get it with this. It doesn't control frizz that much and has a very light hold. But I'm liking it right now. :)

Sorry for the late reply - about the pics - I still don't have a camera. :( Maybe I'll have some $$ left over after I get my tax return to buy one. If not I'll borrow my brother's webcam again, but it doesn't take very clear or detailed pics.

Yes mixed_beauty, I apply the Silky Gel Activator after I wash or co-wash and I usually put my hair up in a towel for a few minutes while I finish my shower. Then I take the towel off and put about a quarter size dollop of the gel in my hands, rub together and distribute through my hair in sections. I start at the back and work my way forward. At first I'll smooth it through, but if I find areas that aren't clumping together or curling, then I'll use my fingers to finger curl some areas. I might use 3 dollops of the gel this way - back, front right, front left. You might need more than this because you have longer hair. I let it air dry.

It ends up very soft and shiny, but with a soft hold. It's nice for me when I want the "natural" looking curls instead of the firm, extra defined ones I get with regular gel.

    Hope this helps. :)

P.S. How are things going with your hair? Have you been enjoying wearing your hair fully curly?

thanks for the tip. im still learning about my hair, but its going ok so far. the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Mixed-Chicks-Leave-in-Conditioner-p-279.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=mixed-chicks-leavein-conditioner]mixed chicks leave in[/buylink] is the only thing so far that makes my curls look good. i tried the curls rock, it works pretty good but the texture is odd. im hoping to try [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] next but its so expensive that i wana just finish the rest of my products first before i buy it and possibly face disappointment.

this is how my hair looks with the mixed chicks, i think it would look good with ur hair too.

Ooooh! Beautiful curls mixed-beauty! Thanks for posting that pic. :)

I was just asking about the Mixed Chicks and Blended Beauty products in another thread(about "Wives' Tales" that went into a racial type of thing). I was wondering if these products that are supposed to be made for "mixed chicks" actually work better for our hair or if it was just hype?

Based on your pic, I'll probably have to break down and try some. :)

I'm glad things are going ok with you and your hair. I'm still figuring mine out too.

I haven't tried the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] yet, but I tried the Barry Fletcher Custard and it wasn't so hot in my hair. I'm not sure how it compares to the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] though. :dontknow: It made my hair feel "weird" and it left a coating on my hair so that every time I touched my hair I was left with a film on my fingers.

Hope the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] works better for you.

    thanks for the compliment :toothy7:

as for the mixed chicks, i really love their DC and their leave in. my only problem with the leave in is that the curl definition goes downhill by day 3, which is when u will proly have to co-wash. im not a big fan of constantly wetting my hair, but this seems to b the only thing that works for me so far. if u do use the leave in, b sure to use their DC as well. i'm actually out of the DC and have never tried the leave in without the DC. hopefully i will still get the same result. lol also the key is to comb in the leave in conditioner and let it air dry. i realized the clumping starts once u comb it in with a comb. good luck with it if u do decide to use it.

btw, the curls rock also left a film on my hands whenever i touched my hair, but it did make my hair look good. lol
  • SystemSystem Posts: 39,059 Administrator
    Thanks for the tips!

I've been washing/co-washing my hair daily because my scalp likes it and my hair looks better when I do. So I should do ok with the leave-in. I'll have to check out the DC too. I looked at them on Curlmart and they both look good and not too expensive for the amount that you get. As short as my hair is, it should last me a long time. lol I'll let you know how it goes when I order it. :D

Edited to ask - what kind of comb do you use? And what do you use for your co-washes?

Hmmm, well there's go any interest in trying the curls rock. lol I can't stand filmy hair! :angry7:
  • mixed_beauty85mixed_beauty85 Posts: 421Registered Users
i use a regular wide tooth comb, but im finding that i miss a couple spots in the back of my head, and it looks so obvious cuz it just looks like frizzy madness. so i bought this goody ouchless comb that is supposedly good for distributing conditioner. i havent tried it yet, but i will tomorrow when i wash my hair.

    /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.goody.com%2FProducts%2FCollections%2FOuchless%2FStyling_Tools%2FOuchless_Shower_Comb.aspx" class="Popup

im still trying to get the hang of co-washing, which i dont do very often. but for co-washes i use the suave tropical coconut. it smells okay, but i think it conditions fairly well. what do u use for co-washing? well good luck with the mixed chicks, u definitely do get a good amount for the price. let me know if it turned out good for u.

btw, i think u should still try the curls rock, it makes the hair style nicely
  • SystemSystem Posts: 39,059 Administrator
Hey! I have that comb! Woohoo! One less thing I have to buy.

For co-washing I alternate between Suave and V05. I have so many of them I shouldn't list them all(it's a bit embarassing). After using those for the co-wash, I condition with another conditioner that's more moisturizing like Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, Lekair Cholesterol Plus, Lekair Shea Butter Cholesterol, or ORS Hair Mayonnaise. I've also been using Dove Intense Damage Therapy(in the dark blue bottle) quite a bit. It works pretty good for me as a leave-in - alone or mixed with some HE Set Me Up gel. It's probably from the cones, but it makes my hair a little more firm than the other conditioners so it holds the curl better. It also reduces frizz.

I alternate co-washes with shampoo washes about 2 to 1. When I shampoo I'll either use Elasta QP Shampoo for Relaxed Hair or a clarifying one if my hair and scalp are extra gunky. But I've been consistantly using Elasta QP's DPR-11 as a deep conditioner after shampooing which my hair LOVES!

I probably don't need that much hold or anything right now since my hair is so short. It actually looks a little better if it's kinda messy & frizzy. It adds volume to it. But when my hair grows up and gets longer, I'm hoping it will end up somewhat like yours. :D So I appreciate you taking the time to share what you're doing. :)

I might end up trying the Curls Rock eventually. I'm a PJ so I don't need much encouragement to buy new products. I just don't like filmy feeling hair. But if it works that great.......
  • mixed_beauty85mixed_beauty85 Posts: 421Registered Users
aw no problem sunshine! ^_^ i tried out the comb the other day, i do notice that it doesnt snag on my hair as much as my usual wide tooth comb does, which is good. im not sure if it distributes conditioner better though. i tried the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Mixed-Chicks-Leave-in-Conditioner-p-279.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=mixed-chicks-leavein-conditioner]mixed chicks leave in[/buylink] with a different conditioner and it did not turn out good at all! i think their products work well together. so i might just have to co-wash on wednesday and DC with their condtioner.

it also doesnt help that its been raining all day in nyc today, my hair is a dry frizzball right now, lol
  • jeamariajeamaria Posts: 1,851Registered Users
@sunshine75: Don't know if they're still doing it, but mixed chicks used to offer a sample of the leave in for free off their website, so if it doesn't work at least it won't cost you. I ordered one, but oddly never received it and didn't bother ordering again.

I remember about a year ago there were a number of threads about people regretting succumbing to the MC "mixed product for mixed hair" hype, especially due to the buildup it left on their hair.

When you think about it, their tagline doesn't make sense scientifically, given the range of hair types among the different races, plus all the different permutations you get after admixture. How could one product, or even one product line cater for all that? It seems to be a product like any other; works for some, and not for others.

On the Fantasia Tea Tree: Do you know the ingredients to this product? I was interested in trying it but the bottle I looked at in the store seemed to have no ingredients list on it. Also, what is the consistency like; it looked very runny in the bottle. Would you say it's like setting lotion? TIA
  • SystemSystem Posts: 39,059 Administrator
Aww mixed_beauty, I'm sure your hair looks cute even if it is a frizzball! :p We're having the same rainy weather all this week in Philly too, so we'll be hair twins!

jeamaria - thanks for the info. I'll check for the free sample and that thread. You're right about the discrepancy. I've known other biracial men and women who's hair types are all over the map - from 2a/b fine waves, to 4b tight kinks and curls that loc up easily. I'll give it a try and see if it works for me(although I wouldn't mind finding something similar that I can buy locally ;) ).

The Fantasia is not watery like a setting lotion but it is quite liquidy. It's thin gel. When I pour some into my hand it makes a puddle, it doesn't just run off like water. And even if I turn my hand to pour it off, some still sticks to my hand like a gel. Like I said, it doesn't really have a strong hold. It's like if you mixed a leave-in with a gel 2:1. Mostly moisture, a little hold.

    Hope that helps. :)

P.S. If I see something in a bss or drugstore I always open the bottle/jar and 1)smell it 2)put a little on my finger or in my hand to see if I like the consistancy. The people who work there might not like it, but they'll like it even less if I insist on a refund on a bottle/jar that has a big dent taken out of it because it didn't work for me.

Edited to add: Ingredients on Fantasia IC Pure Tea Silky Gel Moisturizer/Activator-

Tea Extract, Glycerin, Dimethicone Copolyol, Cyclomethicone, Propylene Glycol, Polyacrylamidomethylpropane Sulfonic Acid, Triethanolamine, Carbomer 934, Polysorbate 20, Quaternium-15, Fragrance(Parfum), EDTA.

One of those cones is water soluble, the other I don't think is but my hair doesn't feel "coney" when I use it and it feels like it rinses out with water. No idea what some of those ingredients are but I'm not CG so it doesn't bother me much. lol
  • jeamariajeamaria Posts: 1,851Registered Users
Thanks for all the details, sunshine75. I might pick it up next time I'm at the BSS. Cyclo-cones are hated by a lot of curlies, but I'll give it a try and see if it works with my hair; I'm due a clarifying session before I henna anyway. :D

ETA: here's a link to an article on cyclomethicones:

cones seem to b the only thing that works for me, and yes the mixed chicks website does still offer samples of their products, u would just have to email them. and yes, the results with their products is not very consistent. after a while ur hair does feel like buildup, so what i try to do is use it every few weeks until i finish it, because i just dont want it to go to waste, but i dont plan on buying it again. the only mixed chicks product i will stick with though is their deep conditioner, it works really well with my hair. i want to try [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] next.

ooo sunshine u are tempting me to buy the fantasia silky gel, lol :evil1:
